How to Move a WordPress Site to a New Domain Without Losing SEO

Yes, you can move a WordPress site to a new domain while preserving most of its search signals, but no migration can guarantee perfectly unchanged rankings. A domain change is a Google “site move with URL changes,” even when every page keeps the same path. The safe method is to map old URLs to relevant new URLs, issue direct server-side 301 or 308 redirects, update canonical and internal-link signals, submit the new sitemap, and use Search Console’s Change of Address tool. Expect temporary ranking and indexing fluctuations while Google recrawls and reindexes the site.

The sequence below separates a true domain move from a hosting-only move, gives implementation and testing steps, and explains what to monitor before you retire the old domain.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

What changes when you move a WordPress site to another domain?

Changing oldexample.com to newexample.com changes the address of every crawlable URL. Google therefore treats the project as a site move with URL changes, even if WordPress content, slugs, categories and page paths stay identical. Search engines must discover the new URLs, process the redirects, consolidate duplicate signals and replace old URLs in their index.

A properly implemented move can transfer ranking signals. Google Search Central states: “301 and other permanent redirects don’t cause a loss in PageRank.” That statement describes the redirect signal; it is not a promise that rankings, traffic or indexing will remain identical. Google also warns that visibility can fluctuate temporarily while it recrawls and reindexes a moved site.

There is no universal percentage for ranking loss or a guaranteed recovery date. Google’s current site-move guidance says a medium-sized website may take “a few weeks or more” for new URLs to replace old ones, while larger sites can take longer. Processing occurs URL by URL and depends on the number of URLs and the capacity and responsiveness of the server.

Use the official Google Search Central site-move guidance as the governing reference for a domain change.

First, identify which kind of move you are making

The instructions differ according to whether visible URLs change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Move type Do URLs change? Core actions Change of Address?
New domain or subdomain Yes Map old URLs, configure direct permanent redirects, update site signals, submit the new sitemap, monitor both properties Yes, for each applicable verified old-domain property
Path or URL structure change on the same domain Yes Map each old URL to its new counterpart, redirect directly, update links, canonicals and sitemap No
Hosting or server change only No; the visible URLs remain the same Prepare the new infrastructure, change DNS, verify delivery, monitor both services, then retire the old host No

A hosting move follows Google’s separate Changing Your Web Hosting and SEO guidance. Do not submit Change of Address for a host change when the URLs are unchanged.

Prepare the new WordPress site before launch

Back up the complete installation

Create independent backups of the database, wp-content, uploaded media, themes, plugins and server configuration. Keep a copy outside the old hosting account. A migration tool can copy files and database tables, but it does not replace a restorable backup or a redirect plan.

Build and test the destination

Make the new domain serve the intended pages before switching visitors. Check representative posts, pages, category archives, author pages, media files, feeds, search pages and any custom post types that receive organic traffic. Confirm that WordPress’s “WordPress Address (URL)” and “Site Address (URL)” use the final protocol and hostname, and that HTTPS certificates cover every hostname you intend to serve.

Staging sites are commonly protected with authentication, a noindex directive or a robots.txt disallow rule. Those protections must not block the production launch. Before going live, remove temporary noindex directives and robots.txt blocks that would prevent Google from crawling the new site. Conversely, do not remove protections from a private staging copy until you are ready for it to be public.

Verify access from outside your browser

  • Request the homepage and several deep URLs with an HTTP client and confirm the expected status, HTTPS certificate and final hostname.
  • Check that the server does not require a login, return a blanket 5xx error or redirect every request to a maintenance page.
  • Confirm that the new robots.txt is reachable and does not disallow important directories or page types.
  • Check the rendered HTML for an indexable title, content and a canonical URL on the new domain.

Use a temporary password or IP restriction for staging, then test again after it is removed. A page that works for an administrator but returns an error to Googlebot is not ready for launch.

Verify Search Console properties

Add and verify the new domain before the cutover. Verify every relevant old-domain variant as well: HTTP and HTTPS, and www and non-www hostnames where they were used. Search Console’s Change of Address process requires verified properties, and Google says to submit requests for all verified old-domain variants that apply to the move, including subdomains.

Create a complete old-to-new URL map

Export the old site’s important URLs before changing DNS or WordPress settings. Include pages that earn traffic or links even if they are not in the current navigation. Useful sources include Search Console’s indexed and performance URLs, analytics landing pages, XML sitemaps, server logs and a crawl of the old site.

For every valuable old URL, assign the closest equivalent new URL. A domain-only move with unchanged paths may use a carefully tested wildcard rule, but do not assume every path survived unchanged. If slugs, folders, taxonomy bases or trailing-slash behavior changed, map URLs individually.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Old URL New URL Mapping decision
https://oldexample.com/guide/wordpress-migration/ https://newexample.com/guide/wordpress-migration/ Same path; a domain-level rule may be suitable after testing
https://oldexample.com/hosting/cheap-plans/ https://newexample.com/hosting/budget-plans/ Different path; create an individual redirect
https://oldexample.com/outdated-product/ Closest genuinely relevant replacement Redirect only when the replacement satisfies the original visitor intent

Do not redirect unrelated pages to the new homepage merely to eliminate 404 reports. Google says an irrelevant mass redirect can confuse users and may be treated as a soft 404. If a page has no meaningful replacement, return an appropriate 404 or 410 rather than sending visitors to an unrelated destination.

Keep the map in a spreadsheet or version-controlled file with columns for old URL, new URL, expected status, redirect type, test result and date checked. This becomes your audit trail when a forgotten URL appears in logs weeks after launch.

Configure direct, permanent server-side redirects

Redirect every mapped old URL directly to its final new URL with a server-side permanent redirect, normally HTTP 301 or 308. Do not make a visitor pass through an HTTP-to-HTTPS redirect, an old-to-intermediate hostname and then a final URL if one direct rule can reach the destination. Avoid chains and loops.

The exact configuration depends on your web server and hosting provider. Ask the server administrator or host which redirect mechanism is active, and place the rules where they execute before WordPress renders a page. A WordPress redirect plugin can be useful for managing a list, but the resulting response still needs to be a direct server-side permanent redirect that works when WordPress is unavailable.

Domain-only example

If every path, query-handling rule and protocol transition has been verified, a domain-level redirect can preserve the path:

oldexample.com/* → https://newexample.com/$1 (301)

This is a pattern, not copy-and-paste server syntax. Test how your server handles trailing slashes, uppercase characters, encoded paths, query strings and files before relying on it for the whole site.

Page-specific example

https://oldexample.com/old-guide/ → https://newexample.com/new-guide/ (301)

Use page-specific rules whenever the path changed or a page was merged. Preserve useful query parameters only when the destination can interpret them; otherwise, strip tracking parameters without creating duplicate redirect targets.

Test redirects before and after DNS changes

  1. Request a sample of high-traffic pages, deep pages, image URLs and URLs with query strings.
  2. Confirm that the old URL returns exactly one permanent redirect and that the Location header is the final new URL.
  3. Request the destination and confirm a successful, indexable response rather than another redirect or an error.
  4. Run the complete URL map through a crawler or script. Google’s troubleshooting guidance names Screaming Frog as an example of a crawler that can find redirect errors; command-line tools and custom scripts are also suitable.
  5. Use Search Console URL Inspection on representative old and new URLs to verify Google’s observed redirect and canonical.

Test both hostname variants and both protocols that were publicly reachable. A redirect rule that works for the non-www hostname but leaves the www hostname dead can strand links and users.

Update every signal on the new domain

Set self-referencing canonicals

Each indexable new page should normally declare its own final new URL in rel="canonical". Remove canonicals that still point to the old domain. Canonicals are a hint rather than a substitute for redirects, so keep both signals consistent. Google’s explanation of canonicalization is available in How to Specify a Canonical with rel=”canonical” and Other Methods.

Replace internal links

Update menus, breadcrumbs, body links, pagination, related-content modules, image links, feeds and structured-data URLs to use the new domain directly. Internal links that still travel through the old domain add redirect work and can hide mistakes. Search-and-replace operations should be performed on a database backup or through a migration process that understands serialized WordPress data; a blind text replacement can corrupt serialized values.

Update hreflang and structured data

If the site uses hreflang, replace every old-domain alternate URL with its new equivalent and keep reciprocal references consistent. Update Open Graph, Twitter card, schema and any JSON-LD fields that contain the old hostname. These signals do not replace redirects, but stale URLs can create conflicting discovery and canonicalization cues.

Publish a new XML sitemap

Generate a sitemap containing the new canonical URLs only. It should not list old URLs, redirecting URLs, blocked URLs or pages that return errors. Submit the new sitemap in the new Search Console property and inspect its processing status. Keep the old sitemap available only as long as it helps Google discover redirected URLs; do not leave it as the permanent canonical URL list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review robots.txt and indexing controls

Allow crawling of the new URLs and remove accidental production noindex directives. Check page templates, HTTP headers and SEO settings because a global setting can override individual page controls. A redirect cannot transfer signals efficiently if Google cannot crawl the destination.

Use Search Console’s Change of Address for a domain move

After the new property is verified and redirects are active, submit Change of Address from the old property in Search Console. This tool is for moves between domains or subdomains. It is not for a hosting change with identical URLs or a path change within the same domain.

  1. Verify the old and new properties, including applicable www/non-www and protocol variants.
  2. Activate and test the old-to-new redirects; do not submit the move while the old site still serves normal pages without redirects.
  3. Open the old property in Search Console and choose the Change of Address tool.
  4. Select the verified destination property and complete Google’s validation checks.
  5. Submit a separate request for each verified old-domain variant that represents part of the move.
  6. Keep both properties accessible so you can inspect coverage, performance and security reports during the transition.

Change of Address helps Google process the move; it does not create redirects, update internal links or repair an incorrect URL map. Those remain your responsibility.

Launch sequence for a controlled cutover

  1. Freeze content briefly or record every edit made during the final migration window so it can be reproduced on the new site.
  2. Take a final database and file backup of the old installation.
  3. Put the new site into its production configuration: final hostname, HTTPS, indexability, robots.txt, canonical tags and sitemap.
  4. Run smoke tests on the homepage, top landing pages, login or checkout flows if applicable, media, forms and any high-value custom functionality.
  5. Apply direct permanent redirects on the old domain and verify them from an external connection.
  6. Change DNS to the new infrastructure, observing the DNS provider’s TTL and allowing for resolver caching.
  7. Request old and new URLs from several networks or monitoring locations; confirm that visitors reach the intended destination without loops or certificate warnings.
  8. Submit Change of Address and the new sitemap in Search Console.
  9. Record the launch time, DNS changes, redirect version and known exceptions so later traffic changes can be correlated with the cutover.

Do not shut down the old server immediately. The old domain must continue answering requests so its redirects can serve users, crawlers and backlinks.

What to monitor after launch

Search Console

  • Performance for both old and new properties: clicks, impressions, queries and average position.
  • Page indexing and crawl reports for redirect errors, duplicate canonical issues, blocked resources, server errors and excluded pages.
  • Sitemap processing and the number of discovered and indexed new URLs.
  • URL Inspection results for representative pages from every redirect pattern.

Server logs and redirect health

Review requests to the old domain to find URLs you missed, redirect loops, repeated hits to obsolete paths and crawlers receiving errors. Check the new server for 4xx and 5xx responses, slow responses and capacity problems. A large site move can increase crawl demand, so ensure the destination can handle concurrent requests without timing out.

Analytics and real users

Annotate the migration date in analytics. Compare organic landing pages, conversions, referral traffic and branded versus non-branded queries rather than looking only at total sessions. Investigate a sudden drop by URL pattern: one broken template, canonical rule or redirect family can affect a subset of pages while the rest of the move works.

Inbound links and citations

Ask owners of important backlinks, partner listings, profiles and business citations to update their links to the new URLs when practical. Redirects preserve access, but a direct link removes an extra hop and reduces dependence on the old infrastructure.

How long should redirects remain?

Google recommends keeping redirects as long as possible and generally for at least one year. Treat one year as a minimum operating period, not an automatic retirement date. Continue longer when the old domain has valuable backlinks, receives direct traffic, appears in offline materials or still generates meaningful log activity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before retiring old infrastructure, confirm that traffic is correctly served from the new site, important old URLs have no unresolved errors, Search Console reports are stable enough to interpret, and no business process still depends on the old hostname. Keep ownership and DNS control of the old domain even after the original hosting account is closed; losing the domain would allow someone else to receive requests that should reach your redirects.

Hosting-only moves: the different procedure

If the domain and every visible URL remain unchanged, do not create a domain-wide redirect and do not use Change of Address. Prepare the new hosting environment, copy and test the WordPress files and database, confirm PHP, database, caching, email and scheduled-task compatibility, then change DNS to the new server.

  1. Make the new host serve the existing domain on HTTPS before changing DNS.
  2. Lower DNS TTL in advance when your provider allows it, while remembering that resolvers may cache records beyond the requested TTL.
  3. Change the DNS records and watch requests reach both old and new servers during propagation.
  4. Verify that the same URLs return the same content, status codes, canonicals, robots.txt and sitemap.
  5. Monitor logs, uptime, crawl errors and analytics. Google says crawl rate may temporarily dip after infrastructure changes and then increase over the following days.
  6. Retire the old host only after delivery from the new service is consistently correct and no DNS or application dependency remains.

Because the URLs did not change, the main SEO risks are downtime, blocked crawling, incorrect server responses, missing assets and capacity problems rather than URL consolidation.

Common failure modes and fixes

Symptom Likely cause Fix
Every old URL lands on the homepage Catch-all redirect used without a URL map Redirect each URL to its closest relevant new page; leave genuinely removed pages as 404 or 410
Redirect report shows chains Old URL goes through HTTP/HTTPS or an intermediate hostname before the final URL Change the old rule to point directly to the final HTTPS URL
New pages are discovered but not indexed Production noindex, robots.txt block, server error or conflicting canonical Inspect the URL, headers, robots.txt, rendered HTML and canonical; fix the blocking signal and request recrawl
Only www or non-www traffic fails One hostname variant was omitted from DNS, certificate or redirect rules Verify and redirect every publicly used hostname and protocol variant
Traffic falls for a subset of pages Those paths were renamed, omitted from the map or redirected to irrelevant destinations Compare the affected URL list with the map and logs; add direct, relevant redirects
Search Console still lists old URLs Google is processing the move or old URLs remain discoverable through links and sitemaps Keep redirects active, submit the new sitemap, update internal links and monitor the URL-level transition
WordPress loops between domains Site URL settings, proxy HTTPS detection or redirect rules disagree Align WordPress URL settings, reverse-proxy HTTPS handling and server redirects, then clear caches

A practical go/no-go checklist

  • New domain and HTTPS certificate are live and tested anonymously.
  • Old and new properties are verified in Search Console.
  • Important old URLs are inventoried and mapped to relevant destinations.
  • Redirects are direct, permanent and tested at scale.
  • New pages use self-referencing canonicals and updated internal links.
  • hreflang, structured data and other hostname-bearing signals use the new domain.
  • Production robots.txt, meta robots and HTTP headers allow intended crawling and indexing.
  • The new sitemap lists only canonical new URLs and has been submitted.
  • Change of Address is ready for each applicable old-domain variant.
  • Backups, rollback notes, monitoring and access to server logs are available.
  • The old domain and redirect infrastructure will remain operational for at least one year.

If any item fails, delay the cutover or limit the launch to a tested subset rather than releasing a partially mapped site. A slower, observable migration is easier to correct than a mass redirect that sends users and crawlers to the wrong pages.

Bottom line

A WordPress domain migration preserves SEO best when it is treated as a URL-by-URL site move: prepare an accessible destination, map every important URL, issue direct 301 or 308 redirects, align canonicals and internal signals, submit Change of Address, and monitor both domains for weeks or longer. Temporary ranking movement is normal; accurate mapping, reliable server responses and long-lived redirects are what protect the signals you have earned.
