Moving a vBulletin forum from /forums to the root of a domain is a coordinated filesystem and URL change. Move the installation files, remove the subfolder from vBulletin’s canonical URL and presentation configuration, set the root cookie path, run rewrite rules from the root server configuration, then add tested 301 redirects from the old paths. Do the work in a maintenance window with a verified backup and a rollback plan.

What changes when a forum moves to the root

A subfolder installation has two identities that must agree: where the files live on the server and what URL vBulletin generates for pages, assets, logins and forms. Moving only the files leaves vBulletin generating /forums links. Changing only the URL leaves the web server looking in the wrong directory. A successful move changes both layers and then preserves the old addresses with redirects.

  • Filesystem: the contents of the vBulletin installation, including its subfolders and uploaded files, move from a directory such as public_html/forums into the document root, such as public_html.
  • Canonical URL: the Forum URL changes from https://example.com/forums to https://example.com, with no trailing slash.
  • Presentation configuration: where the installation uses $config['baseurl'], it must also contain the root URL, and $config['baseurl_login'] must point to the intended login URL.
  • Routing: rewrite rules must be loaded by the root configuration, not by a leftover file in /forums.
  • Cookies: a root forum normally saves cookies with the path /; a narrower path can make users appear logged out.

Exact rewrite directives, cache behavior and redirect patterns depend on your vBulletin major version and server. Use the configuration files shipped with that installation and validate changes on staging whenever possible.

Before touching the live forum

Confirm the current installation and server

Record the current public URL, the filesystem path that serves it, the document root for the domain, the vBulletin version, and whether the server is Apache, IIS or NGINX. Note whether the forum uses Friendly URLs and whether another application already occupies the domain root. The existing root may contain a site-level .htaccess or other routing rules that must be preserved.

Schedule maintenance and capture a rollback point

Choose a maintenance window long enough to copy files, change settings, test authenticated actions and restore the old location if necessary. Announce that posting may be paused. Record the old URL pattern and keep the old directory or a restorable copy until redirects and logins have been verified.

Make and verify backups

  • Export a complete database dump and confirm that it can be opened or restored in a disposable database.
  • Copy the entire vBulletin installation, not just PHP files. Include attachments, avatars, custom uploads, image directories, configuration files and any extensions.
  • Save the current root and subfolder server configuration, including .htaccess, IIS URL Rewrite rules or NGINX configuration.
  • Keep checksums, timestamps or another method of confirming that the copied files are complete.

Move the installation files

  1. Put the forum into maintenance mode or otherwise prevent writes while the final copy is made.
  2. Copy the contents of the existing vBulletin directory into the domain’s document root. Copy the contents, rather than creating a new nested directory such as root/forums.
  3. Preserve file ownership, permissions and symbolic links where your host uses them. Do not overwrite unrelated root-site files without a backup.
  4. Confirm that the root now contains the vBulletin entry files and directories, while attachments, avatars and custom uploads are present at the paths expected by the installation.
  5. Leave the old directory available during testing, but prevent two copies from serving the same session or accepting posts at the same time. Once the root copy is confirmed, the old location should redirect rather than render a second forum.

The vBulletin installation guidance describes a root install as placing the upload contents directly in the web-publishing folder. Hosting migration guidance follows the same approach: move the forum files and their subfolders to the root.

Change vBulletin’s canonical URL

Update the Forum URL in AdminCP

  1. Sign in to AdminCP.
  2. Open Settings > Options > Site Name / URL / Contact Details.
  3. Change Forum URL from the subfolder address, for example https://example.com/forums, to https://example.com.
  4. Do not add a trailing slash. Save the option and rebuild or refresh the options cache if your version provides a cache-rebuild control.

This setting controls links generated throughout the forum. A value that still includes /forums can send users back to the old directory even when the files have moved.

Update presentation configuration when present

Some installations also define the public URL in the presentation config.php. Set $config['baseurl'] to the root URL and make $config['baseurl_login'] match the login URL you intend to use. Both values should omit a trailing slash.

Edit the existing variable values without renaming variables or adding whitespace before the opening <?php tag. A malformed configuration file can produce header errors before vBulletin renders a page. Keep a copy of the pre-edit file so you can restore it quickly.

Install the rewrite rules at the root

vBulletin uses URL rewrites for Friendly URL routing. The rules must therefore be read from the server configuration that governs the new root location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apache

vBulletin distributes a file named htaccess.txt. If the root has no existing .htaccess, rename that file to .htaccess in the document root. If a root .htaccess already exists, merge the vBulletin rules into it instead of replacing unrelated application rules. Keep the existing ordering and test each application route after the merge.

If the forum remains intentionally under a subdirectory, the matching rules use a RewriteBase /subfolder/ value. After a move to the root, remove the old subfolder prefix from rules that explicitly referenced it. Do not leave a subfolder-specific base or target in the root configuration.

IIS

Enable IIS URL Rewrite and place the vBulletin rewrite configuration in the site that owns the domain root. Make sure the site binding, physical path and rule scope all refer to the root location. A rule left on the former /forums application will not route root requests.

NGINX

Use the NGINX configuration supplied for your vBulletin version and adapt its location paths to the root. NGINX does not read Apache .htaccess files, so copying htaccess.txt alone has no effect. Ask the host to reload the server configuration after validating its syntax.

Check rewrite prerequisites

  • Apache requires mod_rewrite and permission for the relevant directory rules.
  • IIS requires the URL Rewrite module.
  • NGINX requires a server-level configuration with the vBulletin locations and fallback behavior installed.
  • Your hosting plan must permit custom rules or provide a control-panel field for them.

Set cookies for a root installation

  1. In AdminCP, open Settings > Options > Cookie and HTTP Header Options.
  2. Set Path to Save Cookies to /. vBulletin requires cookie paths to end in a slash.
  3. Leave Cookie Domain blank unless you deliberately need one cookie shared across a parent domain or several subdomains.
  4. Save the setting, clear the test browser’s cookies for the domain, and start a fresh session.

A cookie path such as /forums/ is not valid for a root forum: the browser will not send that cookie to root-level login and posting endpoints. The symptom is often an apparently successful login followed by an immediate logout or a permissions error.

Refresh caches and test the complete user journey

After saving URL and cookie settings, rebuild or refresh the vBulletin options cache if your version requires it. Then test from both a private browser window and a browser that had an existing logged-in session. Test over the final HTTPS hostname, not only an IP address or temporary host name.

Public pages and links

  • Open the root home page and each forum display.
  • Open an existing thread, follow its pagination links, and verify that every generated URL stays at the root.
  • Run a search and open a result.
  • Load images, avatars and attachments from old and newly uploaded posts.
  • Check notifications and any email links generated after the move.

Authenticated actions

  • Log in, refresh, navigate to another forum and log out.
  • Create a test post, edit it, attach a file if attachments are enabled, and remove the test content afterward.
  • Open AdminCP and ModCP, then perform a harmless read-only check in each.
  • Verify that CSRF tokens, forms and redirects return to root URLs rather than /forums.

What to record during testing

Use browser developer tools and server logs to identify 404 responses, redirect chains, mixed-content warnings, PHP errors and authentication failures. Test representative legacy links before enabling the public redirect, because an apparently correct home page does not prove that thread, attachment and pagination paths resolve.

Redirect the old subfolder URLs

Once the root forum works, permanently redirect old addresses such as /forums/... to their equivalent root URLs. A 301 tells browsers and search engines that the move is permanent and lets existing bookmarks continue to work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build redirects from real legacy examples

  1. Collect representative old links: the forum index, a forum display, several thread formats, paginated pages, search results and attachment URLs.
  2. Determine how each old path maps to the root path. Do not assume one pattern covers every vBulletin version or URL style.
  3. Preserve query strings when they carry pagination, post or search information that is not already part of the path.
  4. Place the redirect before broad catch-all rules, and ensure the destination does not match the redirect again.
  5. Test with a command-line HTTP client or browser and confirm one 301 followed by a final 200 response, not a chain of redirects.

The exact directive differs between Apache, IIS and NGINX, and the correct pattern depends on your former URL format. Derive it from the old installation’s actual links rather than pasting a universal rule. Keep the old directory from serving content after the redirect is active, or two copies can create inconsistent sessions and duplicate pages.

Choose an implementation approach

Approach Advantages Risks and checks Best fit
Self-managed move Direct access to backups, files, database, server rules and rollback. You must coordinate maintenance, permissions, rewrite syntax, DNS or TLS details and recovery. Administrators who can access the document root and server configuration.
Managed hosting move Host staff may handle file permissions, server reloads, URL Rewrite or NGINX changes and troubleshooting. Confirm that you receive a complete backup, can roll back, and can request custom root-level redirects. Sites where server access is restricted or downtime must be minimized.

Regardless of who performs the copy, retain your own verified database and file backup. Ask in advance whether the host supports the rewrite engine required by your vBulletin version and whether support covers DNS, permissions and authentication failures during the cutover.

Server stack Rewrite mechanism Configuration location after the move Key limitation
Apache mod_rewrite and .htaccess The domain document root, merged with any existing root rules. Host must permit directory overrides; rule order can affect other applications.
IIS URL Rewrite The IIS site/application serving the domain root. Rules left on the old subfolder application do not handle root requests.
NGINX Server-level location and rewrite directives The NGINX server configuration for the root host. .htaccess files are ignored; a reload is required after validation.

Troubleshooting after the cutover

The home page redirects back to /forums

Check the AdminCP Forum URL, $config['baseurl'], $config['baseurl_login'] and any application-level URL setting. Confirm that no old value remains in a cached options file or a second configuration file. Verify that the root copy, not the old directory, is the code handling the request.

Every thread returns 404 or the home page works only

Inspect rewrite support first: mod_rewrite, IIS URL Rewrite or the NGINX vBulletin configuration may be missing or scoped to the former subfolder. On Apache, verify that htaccess.txt was renamed or merged at the root and that old RewriteBase or subfolder prefixes were removed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Users cannot stay logged in

Set the cookie path to /, leave Cookie Domain blank unless cross-subdomain sharing is intentional, clear old browser cookies and retry in a new session. If the problem persists, compare the hostname and scheme used for the Forum URL with the hostname and scheme used in the browser; a host or HTTPS mismatch can create a different cookie scope.

Attachments, avatars or custom images are missing

Compare the root copy with the verified backup and confirm that uploaded directories were moved with the installation. Check filesystem permissions and the URL or path settings that point to those directories. Do not delete the old copy until a sample of historical and newly uploaded files loads correctly.

Redirects loop or create several hops

Test one old URL and inspect every Location response. Remove overlapping rules, ensure the destination is the root equivalent, and place the old-subfolder redirect ahead of generic application rewrites. A redirect should end at a working root URL in one hop whenever possible.

AdminCP or ModCP fails while public pages work

Check that the base URL and login URL agree, cookies are valid for /, and the root copy has the same permissions and configuration as the former installation. Review server and PHP logs for header errors caused by whitespace or syntax damage in config.php.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rollback and post-move monitoring

If critical functions fail and cannot be corrected within the maintenance window, restore the previous URL and filesystem mapping from the saved configuration and backup. Re-enable the old forum only after confirming that the database and uploaded files are intact; avoid allowing both locations to accept writes.

For the first days after the move, review web-server logs and webmaster tools for 404s, redirect chains, mixed-content warnings and unexpected authentication failures. Add redirect rules for recurring legacy patterns, correct broken asset paths, and keep the old backup until traffic and login behavior are stable.

Completion checklist

  • Verified database dump and complete file backup, including uploads, are restorable.
  • Root contains the vBulletin installation contents and the old directory no longer serves a second live copy.
  • AdminCP Forum URL and any presentation $config['baseurl'] values use https://example.com without a trailing slash.
  • $config['baseurl_login'] matches the intended login URL.
  • Root rewrite configuration is enabled for the actual server stack.
  • Cookie path is /; Cookie Domain is blank unless deliberate sharing is required.
  • Options/cache data has been refreshed where the vBulletin version requires it.
  • Anonymous and existing logged-in sessions pass page, search, posting, attachment, notification, AdminCP and ModCP tests.
  • Representative old links return a single 301 to the correct root URL and preserve required query strings.
  • Logs and webmaster tools show no unresolved pattern of 404s, loops, mixed content or login failures.
