Jellyfin can manage and stream your media from a server you control, but moving to it is not a one-click transfer of every user, watch history, setting, or piece of metadata. Start by checking your devices and media formats, then choose a fresh setup or a supported migration path. If you already run Jellyfin, treat its current 12.0 upgrade as a separate, backup-first operation.
What changes when you move to Jellyfin?
Jellyfin is Free Software for managing and streaming media from a dedicated server to your devices. The project says it began in December 2018, after Emby decided its next release would be closed-source, and is descended from Emby’s 3.5.2 release. Jellyfin describes its development as community-volunteer work. Its model gives you control over the server and media files, but the software configuration and library information are part of the move too.

Do not assume that pointing Jellyfin at the same media folder will reproduce your existing service. Jellyfin’s migration guide says its internal databases cannot be copied or adjusted easily. Third-party scripts using an API may copy watched status and users from Plex, Emby, or another Jellyfin instance; that is not a promise to transfer all metadata, settings, plugins, or artwork.
Decide what you need to preserve before installing
- Server: Choose the host and operating system, and note where its media and configuration directories will live.
- People and viewing history: Identify which users and watched status matter, and verify what a migration script actually supports before relying on it.
- Devices: Check the exact Jellyfin client available for each television, streaming device, phone, or browser you use.
- Playback formats: Make a note of your video, audio, container, and subtitle formats, especially for remote viewing or multiple simultaneous streams.
- Recovery: Back up the configuration and data you intend to keep, and confirm that the backup can be accessed.
Choose a migration route that matches your current server
Starting fresh
If you do not need to transfer users or watched status, install Jellyfin and scan the folders containing your media. Expect to review the resulting library rather than assume that another server’s organization and metadata will carry over automatically.

Moving from Plex or another Jellyfin server
Jellyfin’s migration guide points to third-party API scripts that can copy watched status and users from Plex, Emby, or another Jellyfin instance. Check the script’s scope and compatibility for your source and destination before running it. The guide does not establish that those scripts transfer every library detail.
Moving an existing Linux installation into Docker
Jellyfin says existing data can be used with its official Docker image when the directories are mapped appropriately. The paths to media must match exactly from inside the container. A host path that exists outside Docker is not enough if Jellyfin sees a different path inside the container.

Moving from Emby
Direct migration of the Emby database is unsupported. Jellyfin advises creating a fresh database and scanning the library because inconsistent database schemas have caused subtle bugs. Its documented procedure does not support Emby 3.5.3 or Emby 3.6 and later.
Will Jellyfin play your media on your devices?
Jellyfin aims for direct playback when a client’s supported formats cover the media’s container, video, audio, and subtitles. If something is unsupported, the server may convert the media. Unsupported audio, container, or subtitles can lead to direct streaming; unsupported video can require video transcoding. Subtitle handling and codec compatibility can therefore affect both server workload and playback quality.

Use Jellyfin’s official client list to check the app for each device you actually use. The project notes that some listed clients are archived or no longer maintained, so the existence of a client listing alone is not proof that it remains a good fit for your setup.
Do you need a new server?
Not necessarily. If your devices can directly play the formats in your library, your server may need little transcoding capacity. Remote playback, incompatible codecs, HDR tone-mapping, and concurrent streams can raise the workload. Check the formats and stream count you expect before buying hardware.

Jellyfin’s hardware-selection guide lists Intel N100 among example integrated-graphics server options. It also gives shared recommendations of 8 GB RAM and a 100 GB SSD for the operating system, Jellyfin files, and transcoding cache; those are recommendations, not universal minimums. For remote access, the guide recommends at least 20 Mbps upload bandwidth. These figures come from Jellyfin’s undated documentation, accessed in 2026.
Hardware encoding quality and codec support differ, so match the hardware to your target formats and clients. Jellyfin’s hardware-acceleration documentation says Raspberry Pi V4L2 support is deprecated, describes earlier support as incomplete, and notes that Raspberry Pi 5 lacks hardware encoders. A Pi is therefore a poor default if you expect hardware-accelerated transcoding, though that does not rule it out for a direct-play server.

Keep a Jellyfin 12.0 upgrade separate from the migration
Jellyfin announced 12.0 as its new stable release on September 7, 2026. Its release announcement says the upgrade changes the database schema and rewrites data on first boot. Stop the server and make a full manual backup of both data and configuration before upgrading: the announcement says that backup is the only way back to the previous version.

- Check your installed version. Jellyfin requires version 10.10.7 or a 10.11.x release before upgrading to 12.0. If you are on an older version, upgrade to 10.10.7 first.
- Stop the Jellyfin server and make a full manual backup of its data and configuration.
- Upgrade to 12.0 only after the backup is complete.
- Allow extra time for the first library scan. Jellyfin warns that it takes significantly longer than usual and some movies may temporarily appear newly added while file associations are checked.
- Do not stop the server during the migration process.
This is an upgrade path for an existing Jellyfin server, not a method for importing another media server’s database.
