To move a design project without losing editability, keep an untouched copy in the source tool, use a documented import path for the exact file format, and inspect the converted project before deleting anything. A native project file and an exported image are not equivalent: the image preserves appearance, while the native or successfully converted project is what preserves layers, text, components and other parts you need to revise.
“Another tool” can mean a different design application, another account or organization in the same application, or a transfer of one asset rather than a complete project. Those are separate jobs with different permissions, file formats and fidelity limits.

Migration advice becomes unreliable when a complete project, an account transfer and a single graphic are treated as the same task. Identify the scope before exporting.

This is a format-conversion problem. You import the source project into the destination application, which creates a new file in the destination’s format. The imported file should be treated as a new working copy, not as a synchronized mirror of the original.

Moving files between accounts or organizations
This is an ownership and permissions problem inside one product. A product may let you move a folder, invite another account or download a local copy, while still preventing a direct account-to-account transfer. Figma’s standard move procedure, for example, cannot directly move files between different Figma accounts or organizations. Its documented alternatives include moving a folder and saving a local copy for import into the other account.
Moving one logo, illustration or icon
This is an asset-transfer problem. A vector asset can often be copied as SVG, but an SVG is not a substitute for a multi-page project with its original page hierarchy, components, comments and application-specific settings.
What “editable” should mean for your project
Before choosing a route, list the structures you must be able to change after the move. Typical requirements include:

- Separate layers, groups and pages rather than one flattened image.
- Editable text, with the intended fonts available or replaceable.
- Symbols, components, variants or other reusable objects.
- Vector paths that remain selectable and adjustable.
- Images that remain embedded or correctly linked.
- Masks, clipping paths, blend modes, shadows, gradients and other effects.
- Canvas size, object placement and responsive constraints where the destination supports them.
Write this list down before conversion. It gives you a concrete acceptance test instead of relying on whether the imported canvas merely looks similar at a glance.
Choose a transfer route
| Route | Best for | What happens to the file | Synchronization | Main checks |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Documented project import | Moving a whole project between applications | The destination creates a file in its own format | Later edits to the source do not automatically update the imported file | Layers, text, fonts, components, effects, masks and images |
| Local native copy | Backup, archive or moving a project to another account | You retain a source-format file that can be re-imported where supported | The local copy is a snapshot, not a live link | Whether the owner allows copying or exporting and whether the destination accepts that format |
| Folder or workspace move | Changing location inside the same product | The product relocates the existing files rather than converting them | Depends on the product’s sharing and ownership model | Account permissions, organization rules, seat access and ownership |
| SVG asset transfer | One vector logo, icon or illustration | A standalone vector asset is pasted or imported | No project-level relationship with the source | Paths, fills, strokes, masks and unsupported SVG elements |
These routes are not interchangeable. A local copy protects your fallback; it does not prove that the destination can read the file. An SVG can preserve a single vector drawing while discarding the project’s page and component system.
Protect the source before touching it
- Stop editing the only copy. Save the current project in the source tool’s native format and label it as the pre-migration original.
- Create a separate backup. Where the product offers a local download, save that file in addition to the cloud copy. Figma’s local-copy feature supports
.figfiles for Figma Design, among other native formats. A file owner can restrict copying or exporting, so the option may not appear for every file. - Record the project conditions. Note the source application and version if shown, canvas dimensions, page count, fonts, linked or embedded images, and any external libraries. Capture a few reference screenshots of representative pages. Screenshots are visual references only; they are not editable backups.
- Make the backup independently retrievable. Store it in a location separate from the working project, such as a local computer or optional external drive. Open the downloaded file, when the format permits, to confirm that it is not an empty or incomplete export.
- Do not overwrite the original with an imported result. Use a new destination file or a clearly named migration folder. Keeping both versions makes comparison and rollback possible.
Check the exact import path
Compatibility is specific to a source-format and destination-application pair. “Supports imports” is not a universal promise that every project format, feature or version will work. Read the destination’s current official documentation for the exact extension you have, then verify whether it imports a complete project, individual assets or only an image.

Figma’s documented Sketch workflow
Figma documents importing .sketch files and converting them into Figma Design files. After import, Sketch features are treated as Figma features in the new file. The original Sketch document remains separate: later edits to it are not reflected in the imported Figma file. Keep the Sketch source if you may need to return to it or repeat the conversion.

Canva documents a range of import options, and its developer API describes imports from other applications, including Illustrator-format files. This establishes that those documented routes exist; it does not establish that every design application, file version or feature will import with full editability. Confirm the precise file type and workflow in Canva’s current documentation before committing the source project.
Run a controlled whole-project migration
- Make a test copy. Duplicate the source or use the local backup, not the only working file. If the project has many pages, select a representative sample that includes ordinary text, a complex illustration, a component or symbol, an image, masks and effects.
- Prepare fonts and linked content. List every font and identify which images are embedded and which depend on a path or library. If a font is unavailable in the destination, decide in advance whether you will install an allowed equivalent, replace it or preserve the text as outlines for a specific asset. Outlining text protects appearance but removes text editability, so it is not a general solution for an editable project.
- Use the destination’s documented import command. Select the exact source file type the documentation names. Do not rename an extension to make it appear compatible; that changes the label, not the file structure.
- Save the result as a new destination-native file. Give it a versioned name such as “Project name – imported test” and retain the untouched source beside it.
- Compare representative pages. Check the acceptance list: page and layer hierarchy, text selection and editing, font substitution, components, masks, effects, image placement and canvas dimensions.
- Correct the conversion in the destination file. Record every repair, such as replacing a missing font or rebuilding a mask. If a repair changes the visual result or removes editability, note that trade-off rather than treating the import as identical.
- Repeat with the full project only after the test passes. Import the complete source, then run the same checks on every page or on a documented sample that covers each repeated pattern.
- Archive both versions. Keep the source-native project and the converted destination file until the destination has passed your practical review and you have no remaining need to reproduce the transfer.
Move between accounts or organizations in the same product
Do not start by exporting to a generic image. First determine whether you need to change ownership, workspace location or user access. These actions can have different permission requirements.

Use a folder or workspace move when available
A folder move keeps the existing project in its native environment and may preserve more structure than a format conversion. Check whether you are the owner, whether the destination organization permits the move and whether the receiving account has the required seat or plan access.
Use a local copy when direct transfer is unavailable
Figma’s documented alternatives include saving a local copy and importing that copy into another account. The receiving account then gets a new file, so verify ownership, sharing permissions and any libraries or fonts that were available only in the original account. A file owner may disable copying or exporting, which can block this route.
Verify access before removing the old account
Sign in as the receiving account and open the transferred or imported file. Confirm that it can be edited, shared with the intended collaborators and downloaded if that is part of your recovery plan. Do not delete the original account or revoke access until this check succeeds.

Transfer individual assets with SVG carefully
For a standalone vector logo, icon or illustration, SVG is often the most practical interchange format. Figma recommends SVG for copying assets between design tools and describes it as lossless for that workflow. That recommendation applies to the individual vector asset, not to a complete project migration.
Figma also notes a specific limitation: SVG marker and pattern elements are not included when pasting into Figma. If your asset uses those elements, inspect the pasted result and rebuild or replace them in the destination. Also check masks, strokes, gradients, blend modes and text, because an SVG may represent text as live text, paths or a rendering that behaves differently in the destination.
- Select only the asset you intend to move, rather than the entire page.
- Copy or export it through the source tool’s SVG workflow.
- Paste or import the SVG into the destination application.
- Enter the destination’s vector-editing mode and select individual paths to confirm that the asset is not a flattened bitmap.
- Inspect markers, patterns, masks, strokes and text, then compare dimensions and placement with the source.
- Save the corrected asset in the destination’s native format and retain the original source asset.
Inspect the converted file systematically
Visual similarity is necessary but not sufficient. A file can look correct while its text is outlined, its layers are flattened or its images are missing. Review the following categories in a fixed order.
Recommended Free Tools
Structure and navigation
- Every required page or artboard exists.
- Layer and group names are present where they matter to your workflow.
- Objects can be selected individually instead of only as one flattened image.
- Hidden, locked and nested objects behave as expected.
Text and fonts
- Text can be edited, selected and copied.
- Font family, weight, size, line height, tracking and alignment are correct.
- Unavailable fonts are clearly identified rather than silently substituted.
- Text wrapping and overflow match the reference screenshots.
Reusable objects
- Symbols, components, variants or equivalent reusable structures remain usable.
- Instances still relate to their main component where the destination supports that concept.
- Overrides, constraints and responsive behavior are checked on more than one instance.
Appearance and media
- Vector paths, fills, strokes, gradients, shadows and blend modes match.
- Masks and clipping paths reveal the intended portions of an image.
- Images are present at the expected resolution and are not broken links.
- Colors, transparency and layer order are correct.
Geometry and output
- Canvas dimensions, object coordinates and rotations are preserved.
- Representative exports match the source’s intended visual output.
- Objects near page edges, outside the canvas or inside nested groups have not shifted.
Common failure modes and what to do
| Symptom | Likely issue | Response |
|---|---|---|
| The destination opens only a picture | An image export was used instead of a project import | Return to the untouched source and use the destination’s documented project-format import, if one exists. |
| Text is visible but cannot be edited | The transfer outlined or flattened the text, or the import path does not preserve text objects | Test the exact documented importer with a source copy. Keep the original live text and decide whether manual rebuilding is required. |
| Text reflows or looks different | A font is unavailable or typography settings converted differently | Identify the missing font, install or substitute it where permitted, then recheck wrapping and spacing. |
| Effects or masks disappear | The feature is not represented in the destination format | Rebuild the effect in the destination, export that element as a separate asset when appearance matters more than editability, and document the trade-off. |
| Images show as missing | The source used links or libraries the destination cannot resolve | Relink or re-embed the images in the destination and verify that the source backup still contains the originals. |
| A pasted SVG loses decorative details | Unsupported SVG elements were omitted | Inspect the SVG’s markers and patterns in particular; recreate them or use a destination-native equivalent. |
| The imported file does not update when the source changes | Import created a separate converted file | Make the source the controlled master, repeat the import when needed, and track which version is current. |
| The copy or export option is unavailable | The owner or organization restricted copying, exporting or access | Ask the owner or administrator for the permitted transfer route. Do not bypass the restriction by treating a screenshot as an editable backup. |
When to keep two masters
Keep the source-native project as the master when the destination cannot preserve a feature you may need later, when the destination importer is one-way, or when the source is still under active development. Work in the destination only after deciding how future changes will be reconciled. If both files must evolve, record which one is authoritative and repeat the transfer deliberately rather than assuming the files remain linked.
A converted file is ready to replace the source only after you have opened it from the receiving account or destination application, confirmed the required objects are editable, checked representative outputs and preserved a recoverable source copy. There is no blanket guarantee that every design tool and every project feature will survive conversion unchanged, so your own acceptance list is the final test.
