Windows 8 can mount ISO files without extra software. In File Explorer, right-click the .iso file and select Mount. Windows creates a virtual DVD drive under This PC, where you can open the image and run or copy its contents. To unmount it, right-click that virtual DVD drive and choose Eject. Ejecting removes the virtual drive but does not delete the ISO file stored on your disk.
What an ISO file is and what Windows 8 does with it
An ISO is a disc-image file. Microsoft identifies the .iso extension as an ISO-9660 disc image: a file that contains the data and structure of an optical disc such as a CD or DVD. Mounting presents that image to Windows as though a disc had been inserted into a physical DVD drive.

Windows 8 includes native ISO support. You do not need to burn the image to a blank disc, install an archive utility, or download a virtual-drive application. The ISO remains an ordinary file in its original folder while Windows exposes its contents through a temporary virtual optical drive.

- Open File Explorer and browse to the folder containing the ISO.
- Right-click the file whose name ends in
.iso. - Select Mount.
- Open This PC. A new DVD drive should appear with its own drive letter.
- Open the virtual DVD drive to browse the image. If it contains an installer, start it from the files inside the drive; if it contains documents or other data, copy or open them as you would from a physical disc.
The mount operation does not move or rewrite the ISO. The original file stays in place, so you can eject the virtual disc and mount it again later.
What to expect after mounting
- The virtual drive appears in This PC alongside your physical disks and removable drives.
- Windows assigns a drive letter automatically. The letter can differ from one mount to the next if other removable devices are connected.
- Opening the drive shows the disc-image contents, not a second copy of the ISO file.
- Closing File Explorer does not unmount the image; the virtual drive remains until you eject it or dismount it with PowerShell.
Unmount or eject the ISO
In the graphical interface, Eject is the unmount operation.
- Open This PC in File Explorer.
- Identify the virtual DVD drive created for the mounted image.
- Right-click that drive and select Eject.
The virtual drive disappears, but the ISO file is not deleted. If you want to mount a different image and Windows cannot assign another suitable drive letter, eject the current virtual disc first, then mount the next ISO.

Mount and dismount an ISO with PowerShell 3.0
Windows 8 includes Windows PowerShell 3.0 and its Storage module, which provides native ISO commands. Microsoft Scripting Blog author Ed Wilson described the capability this way: “By using Windows PowerShell 3.0 in Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012, the ability to mount an ISO file is built right in.” PowerShell is useful when you repeat the operation, work with several images, or need command-line visibility into the disk-image object.
Mount from PowerShell
- Open Windows PowerShell. Use the Windows 8 Start screen to search for PowerShell, then launch it.
- Run the mount command, replacing the path with the full path to your file:
Mount-DiskImage -ImagePath "C:pathimage.iso"
After the command completes, check This PC for the new virtual DVD drive. The image path must identify the actual ISO file; if the path contains spaces, keep it inside quotation marks.
Check whether an image is mounted
Use Get-DiskImage with the same path:
Get-DiskImage -ImagePath "C:pathimage.iso"
This reports the disk-image object associated with that file. A mounted ISO registers as a disk volume, so troubleshooting is often more productive when you also look for the resulting volume and drive letter in File Explorer rather than expecting a new physical-disk entry.

Dismount from PowerShell
Run:
Dismount-DiskImage -ImagePath "C:pathimage.iso"
This removes the virtual optical drive while leaving the ISO file untouched. For a folder containing several images, Microsoft demonstrates piping each Get-DiskImage result to Dismount-DiskImage; for example:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Get-DiskImage -ImagePath "C:Imagesone.iso" | Dismount-DiskImage
Repeat the pipeline for each image you need to remove, or adapt it into your own script when you have a larger, known set of paths. Verify the result in This PC and with Get-DiskImage.
File Explorer versus PowerShell
| Method | Interface | Repeatability | Troubleshooting visibility | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| File Explorer | Graphical | Convenient for a one-off mount or eject | Shows the virtual DVD drive directly in This PC | Opening an image interactively |
| PowerShell 3.0 | Command line | Scriptable for repeated or batched operations | Exposes disk-image and volume objects through commands | Automation and diagnosis |
Both methods use the same Windows 8 storage support. Choose Explorer when you need to inspect files immediately; choose PowerShell when you need repeatable commands or object-level checks.

Why the Mount option is missing
The most common reason is an incorrect association for the .iso extension. If an archive manager or disc-burning program is registered as the application that opens ISO files, the context menu may omit Windows’ Mount command.
Restore Windows Explorer as the ISO handler
- In File Explorer, right-click the ISO file and choose Properties.
- On the General tab, find Opens with and select Change.
- Choose Windows Explorer from the application list. If it is not immediately visible, use the option to browse for it in the Windows installation.
- Apply the change and close the Properties dialog.
- Right-click the ISO again. The Mount command should now be available.
This changes the default opener for ISO files; it does not alter the image data. You can still use another program for a specific task by opening that program separately.

Troubleshoot “Couldn’t Mount File” and permission errors
Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 can display a mount failure even when the image was actually attached. Start by checking This PC for a new virtual DVD drive before repeating the command. Retrying immediately can create confusion if the first attempt succeeded in the background.

- Diamond-cut design for a sophisticated look that perfectly complements any device
- Disc encryption double security With password-controlled and hidden-file functionality
- Drag and burn provides a friendly interface with only three simple steps to burn a disc
- Windows and Mac compatible
1. Confirm whether the image is already mounted
- Look in This PC for a new DVD drive.
- Open the drive and check whether the expected files are present.
- Use
Get-DiskImage -ImagePath "C:pathimage.iso"if you are working in PowerShell.
If the drive exists, use it or eject it before trying another mount. Do not delete the ISO to resolve a message that merely reports a misleading failure.
2. Remove the sparse-file attribute
Microsoft documents sparse ISO files as a cause of mount errors. A sparse file has unallocated regions represented as metadata rather than ordinary stored bytes. Copy the ISO to a new file or to another folder using File Explorer, then try mounting the copied file. The copy operation creates a normal, non-sparse file in the documented scenario.
3. Disconnect removable media temporarily
A USB media reader or another removable device can interfere with the automatic virtual-drive assignment. Eject or disconnect unnecessary removable media, then retry the mount. Reconnect the hardware after the ISO is attached if you still need it.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →4. Resolve a drive-letter conflict
Windows must assign a usable drive letter to the virtual optical drive. Existing removable volumes or manual assignments can leave no suitable letter, or can reserve the letter Windows attempts to use. Eject removable media and try again. If the conflict persists, use Windows Disk Management to assign a different letter to the conflicting volume, then retry the ISO mount.
5. Consider an unsupported image or damaged Windows components
Microsoft’s Windows 8 troubleshooting documentation also records unsupported image formats and component-store damage among the possible error variants. The native feature is designed for supported ISO disc images; an image that is incomplete, corrupted, or in a format Windows does not recognize may not mount. Test a known-good ISO if available to distinguish a problem with one file from a system-wide problem.
Component-store damage can affect the storage features themselves. Because the documented error variants do not have one universal repair, first isolate the simpler causes above: verify the file path, check for an already mounted drive, copy a sparse image, remove removable media, and correct drive-letter assignments. If ordinary ISO files still fail afterward, treat the issue as a Windows component or image-format problem rather than repeatedly changing the file association.
Quick Recap
Practical usage and safety notes
- Mounting is not burning. A mounted ISO is available virtually; no physical disc is created.
- Ejecting is reversible. It removes the virtual drive but leaves the ISO in its original folder.
- Keep the source file available. Moving or renaming the ISO after mounting can make later PowerShell commands that use the old path fail.
- Use the virtual drive for installers carefully. Run setup files only when you trust the image’s source, just as you would with software on a physical disc.
- Expect drive letters to vary. Windows assigns letters according to the devices currently connected, so scripts should use the image path rather than assume a permanent letter.
A concise decision path
- For a normal one-time operation, right-click the ISO and choose Mount.
- If the command is absent, restore Windows Explorer under the file’s Opens with setting.
- If Windows reports an error, check This PC first because the image may already be mounted.
- For a confirmed failure, copy a sparse file, disconnect removable media, and resolve drive-letter conflicts in that order.
- Use PowerShell’s
Mount-DiskImage,Get-DiskImage, andDismount-DiskImagecommands when you need repeatability or clearer storage-object diagnostics.
