The reliable way to waterproof an outdoor access point is to follow that exact model’s installation guide: confirm whether it permits exposed mounting, use the specified bracket orientation, run the required outdoor-rated cable, and fit the supplied cable gland and seal for the cable’s diameter. There is no universal outdoor-AP sealing method. A device approved only for a sheltered location can fail when mounted in open weather, and household caulk is not a substitute for a designed gasket or gland.
Use this model-first procedure before drilling, terminating an RJ45 plug, or tightening any hardware. The examples below show why specifications differ among models; treat every dimension, cable type, and tightening instruction as model-specific.

Start with the exact access-point model
Read the installation guide for the precise model and hardware revision before choosing a location or buying cable. “Outdoor” on a product page does not automatically mean the unit may sit in direct rain, spray, blowing dust, or sunlight. The guide may require an eave, a protective enclosure, a particular wall angle, or a minimum distance from an opening.
Exposure rating is not interchangeable
For example, Ubiquiti’s UAP-AC-PRO guide says the unit should be installed under an eave or another protected location and not in an open environment. It also specifies at least 60 cm (2 ft) from the edge of the eave or ceiling. That setback applies to that model only; do not use it as a generic rule for another access point. Read the model’s environmental limits, allowed installation locations, and any restrictions on direct precipitation before proceeding.

Keep the guide available at the worksite. It is the authority for the permitted mount, cable entry, seal, grounding method, and tightening sequence. If the guide calls for a separate weatherproof enclosure, use that enclosure rather than trying to make an indoor-rated AP weatherproof with sealant.
Choose a location and orient the mount for drainage
Mounting position protects the seal as much as the seal itself. Select a solid surface that can support the bracket and leaves room for the cable to approach without a sharp bend or downward pull on the gland.
Follow the specified cable-feed direction
The UAP-AC-PRO guide requires its cable-feed opening to face away from the open environment and, for a wall mount, point downward. This orientation reduces the chance that rain will run directly into the opening. Other access points can use a different orientation, so copy the diagram in your own guide rather than assuming that “down” is always correct.

- Keep the unit within the exposure limits stated for the model, including any eave or roof clearance.
- Avoid locations where roof runoff, sprinkler spray, or pressure-washer water hits the cable entry.
- Provide enough clearance to install the gland, tighten it with the specified tool, and remove the AP for service.
- Route the cable so a short drip loop sits below the entry when the guide permits one. Do not create a loop that stresses the connector or conflicts with the bracket.
- Do not block vents, heat-dissipation surfaces, or the access point’s grounding point.
Select the correct outdoor Ethernet cable
Cable category alone does not establish outdoor suitability. Check the access point’s requirements for ultraviolet resistance, jacket construction, shielding, conductor type, connector style, and outside diameter.
Examples of model-specific requirements
| Access point or guide | Cable requirement stated by the guide | What to verify before purchase |
|---|---|---|
| Aruba 387 Series | UV-resistant, outdoor-rated Cat 5e or better cable | Outdoor jacket and a diameter that fits the supplied grommet |
| Cisco Catalyst 9124AX | Shielded outdoor-rated Cat 6 or Cat 6A cable within the guide’s stated diameter range | Shielding, category, jacket rating, and the exact outside-diameter range |
| Ubiquiti UAP-AC-PRO | Shielded Cat 5 or above for outdoor wired Ethernet | Shielding and compatibility with the AP’s connector and grounding instructions |
These are examples, not a universal bill of materials. A cable that fits one model’s gland may be too large, too small, or electrically unsuitable for another. Measure the finished cable, including the jacket, against the range printed in the guide. If you plan to terminate the cable in the field, confirm whether the gland fits the cable before attaching the connector; some glands cannot pass over a terminated plug.

Solid, stranded, and shielded conductors
Use the conductor and connector type specified by the AP manufacturer. Shielded cable may be required for lightning and electromagnetic-noise control, but shielding only helps when the connector, AP, PoE equipment, and grounding path are compatible. Do not assume that adding a shielded patch lead to an unshielded outdoor run satisfies a grounding requirement.
Identify every gland, grommet, and cap before assembly
Lay out the supplied parts and match each part to the installation drawing. Keep the nut, body, compression seal, washers, and dust caps together; substituting a generic part can change both the diameter range and the compression geometry.
Match the seal to the cable diameter
The Aruba 387 Series package includes grommets for 4–6 mm and 6–10 mm cables. Select the grommet whose range contains the actual cable-jacket diameter. A seal that is too large may not compress around the jacket; one that is too small can damage the jacket or prevent the nut from seating.
Cisco’s Catalyst 9124AX documentation describes two cable-seal ranges for its gland. Use the range and part arrangement shown in the Catalyst 9124AX Hardware Installation Guide, not the Aruba or another manufacturer’s dimensions.
Do not replace a designed seal with caulk
Caulk may hide a gap temporarily, but the reviewed manufacturer instructions do not establish it as an approved substitute for a gasket or cable gland. Sealants can make later service difficult, trap water, obscure a damaged jacket, or prevent the gland from compressing correctly. If a supplied seal is missing, cracked, or the wrong size, obtain a model-compatible replacement or contact the manufacturer instead of improvising.

Prepare the mount and cable entry
- Mark the bracket location. Use the model’s drilling template or dimensions. Confirm that the fasteners are suitable for the wall, pole, or structure and that the bracket will remain in the required orientation.
- Drill and deburr the holes. Remove sharp edges that could cut the cable jacket or deform a gasket. Keep drill dust out of the open AP and gland.
- Install the bracket or mounting plate. Tighten its fasteners evenly and verify that the plate cannot rotate under cable tension.
- Plan the cable route. Leave enough slack for service, keep the jacket continuous through the gland, and avoid a bend tighter than the cable manufacturer allows.
- Inspect the cable jacket. Reject any section with cuts, flattening, abrasion, or a damaged UV-resistant outer layer. The gland seals against the jacket, not against inner conductors or tape.
Install the gland and seal in the prescribed order
Thread the parts in the sequence shown in the guide before inserting the cable. A typical assembly has a gland body, a compression seal or grommet, and a seal nut, but the order and presence of washers vary. Photographing the original layout before disassembly can prevent a reversed seal.
Aruba AP-375EX/AP-377EX tightening example
The Aruba AP-375EX/AP-377EX guide instructs the installer to connect the Ethernet lead, tighten the seal nut by hand until the seal contacts the cable, and then tighten it one further turn with a spanner. That is a procedure for those models. Do not apply the “one further turn” instruction to a different access point unless its own manual says so.
General seating checks
- The seal should sit evenly around the cable jacket, without a visible fold or wedge.
- The jacket should not slide when the cable is pulled gently by hand after the gland is tightened.
- The gland body should be fully engaged with the AP housing or mounting adapter, with no cross-threading.
- The nut should be tightened only to the model’s stated hand-tight, torque, or tool instruction. Overtightening can crush the jacket or split the seal.
- Any unused port must retain the specified cap or plug. Do not leave an open cable entry while the AP is energized.
Ground the AP and PoE system
Grounding is part of an outdoor installation, not an optional sealing accessory. Follow the AP guide and the PoE injector or switch instructions together; they may specify different connection points or bonding hardware.
UAP-AC-PRO example
For the UAP-AC-PRO, Ubiquiti specifies shielded Cat 5 or above for outdoor wired Ethernet and grounding through the PoE AC ground. The requirement concerns the complete power and Ethernet installation, not just the gland. Follow the electrical code and local requirements that apply to the building and site.
Other APs can require a dedicated grounding lug, a bonded shield, or a particular surge-protection arrangement. Never use a random metal bracket as a grounding conductor unless the manufacturer and applicable electrical rules allow it. Verify continuity and bonding with the procedure and test equipment specified for your installation.

Mount the access point without stressing the seal
- Connect the prepared Ethernet lead. Ensure the plug is fully latched and that the cable is not twisting the gland as you turn the AP into position.
- Align the housing with the bracket. Preserve the guide’s required cable-feed direction; do not rotate the AP for a better signal if that points the entry toward weather.
- Secure the locking hardware. Tighten screws or clamps evenly, using the stated torque where one is provided.
- Form the approved cable route. Keep the entry supported and protect the run from rubbing against masonry, sheet metal, or a sharp bracket edge.
- Install caps and covers. Close every unused opening and fit the housing cover or weather shield before exposure.
Inspect the seal before power-up
Perform a deliberate visual and mechanical inspection while the parts are still accessible.
- Confirm that the cable jacket is intact from the gland to the first support.
- Verify that the selected grommet or seal matches the cable diameter range in the model guide.
- Look around the entire seal circumference for an even compression line and no gap.
- Check that the gland nut and body are secure and not cross-threaded.
- Confirm that unused ports have their specified caps.
- Ensure the mount has not rotated and the cable entry still faces the required direction.
- Confirm grounding and PoE connections before applying power.
The manufacturer material reviewed here supports model-specific gland and connection procedures, but it does not define one universal field leak-test protocol. Do not invent a pressure or hose test that could force water past a seal. If the model guide specifies a test, use that exact method; otherwise rely on the inspection, correct assembly, and exposure limits in the guide.
Commission the AP and verify the network
- Apply PoE according to the AP instructions. Use the approved injector or switch class and connect the ground path required by the manufacturer.
- Wait for the normal startup indication. Check the model’s documentation for LED behavior rather than treating an unlit LED as proof of a sealing problem.
- Adopt or configure the AP. Use the controller or setup process specified for the model, then confirm that the wired interface negotiates at the expected speed.
- Test from the intended coverage area. Verify client association, throughput appropriate to your service, and stability while the AP remains in its final mounted position.
- Inspect again after cable movement. If commissioning required unplugging or rerouting the cable, recheck the gland and cap seating before leaving the installation exposed.
How to compare outdoor APs and replacement parts
If you are still choosing hardware, compare the specifications that affect weather resistance rather than relying on an “outdoor” label.
| Comparison point | Question to answer from the exact guide | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Exposure rating | Can it be installed in direct weather, or only under protection? | Determines whether an exposed wall, pole, or eave location is permitted. |
| Mount orientation | Which side must face down or away from exposure? | Controls how rain reaches the cable entry and housing seams. |
| Mount and gland hardware | Are the bracket, grommets, caps, and gland supplied? | Prevents buying an incompatible “universal” replacement. |
| Cable category and jacket | What category and outdoor/UV rating are required? | Protects the run from sunlight and environmental damage while meeting link requirements. |
| Shielding and grounding | Must the cable be shielded, and where does the shield bond? | Ensures the Ethernet and power installation follows the manufacturer’s grounding design. |
| Cable diameter | What outside-diameter range does the supplied seal accept? | Determines whether the gland can compress around the actual jacket. |
| Environmental conditions | What temperature, moisture, dust, wind, and chemical limits are listed? | Identifies sites where an enclosure or different model is necessary. |
Common installation failures and fixes
The AP was mounted in open weather even though the guide requires shelter
Move it to an approved protected location or select a model rated for the actual exposure. Adding caulk around an indoor- or sheltered-location AP does not change its approved rating.

The gland leaks after a cable change
Power down, remove the nut, and inspect the seal and jacket. Confirm that the replacement cable is within the specified diameter range and that the correct grommet is installed. Replace a cut, flattened, or permanently deformed seal with the model-compatible part.

The cable will not pass through the gland
Check whether the gland must be installed before the RJ45 plug is terminated. Verify the cable diameter and the guide’s connector instructions. Do not force a plug or enlarge the seal opening; either can compromise the designed compression.
The cable entry points toward the rain
Remount or rotate the bracket as the guide directs. For the UAP-AC-PRO, the cable-feed opening must face away from the open environment and point downward on a wall mount. Do not solve an orientation error with a bead of sealant.
The seal nut is extremely tight
Stop before crushing the jacket. Recheck thread alignment, seal size, and the manual’s tightening method. A different model’s torque or turn count is not a valid substitute.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe link works indoors but drops outdoors
Inspect the outdoor cable for jacket damage and verify category, shielding, connector termination, and grounding against the AP guide. Check the PoE source and surge-protection arrangement as well; a working indoor patch lead does not prove that the outdoor run meets the model’s requirements.
Maintenance after installation
Include the AP in routine exterior inspections, especially after severe weather or any work that moves the cable. Look for cracked UV jackets, loose brackets, displaced caps, corrosion, animal damage, and a gland nut that has backed off. Clean only with methods approved by the manufacturer; avoid solvents that can attack seals or cable jackets.
If the AP must be removed, protect the open cable and gland from rain while it is disconnected. Reassemble the same seal parts in the same order, inspect the jacket again, and repeat the grounding and commissioning checks before returning the unit to service.
