Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse a validated automatic upper-arm monitor with a cuff that fits, take two readings one minute apart under consistent conditions, and record both. A log can help your health professional see patterns, but it does not diagnose high blood pressure or replace medical care.
Choose a monitor that fits and is validated
The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends an automatic cuff-style monitor for the upper arm. Wrist and finger monitors are less reliable for routine use. Check that the model has been validated and that its cuff range matches your measured upper-arm circumference. If the monitor is for a child or someone who is pregnant, check that its validation applies to that population. See the AHA’s home monitoring guidance for device advice.

When comparing monitors, look beyond the display: confirm cuff fit and validation first, then consider readability, ease of use, memory or sharing features, and cost and availability. A feature-rich monitor is not a substitute for an appropriately sized cuff and a validated device.

Sit with your back supported and feet flat on the floor; keep your legs uncrossed. Place the cuff on bare skin, not over clothing. Rest your arm on a flat surface so the cuff is at heart level. The CDC’s measurement guidance and the AMA’s advice on home BP measurement also emphasize proper positioning.
Take and record the readings
- Measure at a consistent time. Follow the schedule recommended by your health professional; ask if you are unsure how often to check.
- Take two measurements. Sit still and take one reading, wait one minute, then take a second. Record both, even if one is lower.
- Write down the details. Record the date and time, systolic pressure (the top number), diastolic pressure (the bottom number), and pulse if the monitor displays it. Add symptoms or unusual circumstances if your clinician asks you to.
- Bring the record to your appointment. Take the paper log or the monitor so your health professional can review its stored readings.
The AHA’s printable My Blood Pressure Log includes a space for your blood-pressure goal. For its pre-appointment tracker, the AHA suggests two readings in the morning and two at bedtime each day for a minimum of three days and preferably seven. That is a short-term pre-appointment schedule, not a universal long-term routine; follow your clinician’s advice for ongoing monitoring.

Choose a record-keeping method you will use
A paper log, the AHA’s free printable, or your monitor’s memory can all help capture readings for review. Choose the method that makes it easy to enter both readings in each pair and bring or share the results with your health professional. A paid journal is not required. The AHA notes that a single measurement is “like a snapshot,” which is why recording readings over time can be useful.
AHA News reported in a May 22, 2020 article that Paul Muntner, professor of epidemiology and associate dean for research at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, said: “When blood pressure monitors cannot transmit readings to a patient’s doctor, the next best thing is to have a device that stores the blood pressure readings.” Read the AHA News article.

What to do about a very high reading
If your reading is above 180/120 mm Hg, wait at least one minute and measure again. If the repeat reading is still above that threshold, contact a health professional immediately.
If a reading above 180/120 mm Hg occurs with chest pain, shortness of breath, back pain, numbness, weakness, a change in vision, or difficulty speaking, call 911.

Use home readings as part of care
A home reading is information to discuss with a health professional, not a standalone diagnosis. A clinician confirms a high blood pressure diagnosis and advises on treatment. Keep regular medical visits, and do not stop or change prescribed medication based only on readings at home.
