A valid /verify result is not proof of settlement: the selected scheme and payment flow determine when settlement occurs and what evidence your order system should record.
Understand the x402 lifecycle before reconciling
A typical request begins when a client requests a protected resource. The resource server can return HTTP 402 with payment requirements; the client selects a supported option, creates a signed payment payload, and retries. The server then follows the flow resolved for that scheme and network. The x402 Foundation repository and V2 specification describe the protocol sequence and flow distinctions.

Keep three application events distinct: authorization means the payment payload passed a check; fulfillment means the resource operation ran; settlement means the payment state was committed according to the selected flow. The protocol does not prescribe an application order schema, so your system must preserve the link between its order and the corresponding payment attempt.

Authorization flow
The V2 specification describes this as the default: verify the payment, execute the resource operation, settle, then respond. Fulfillment can therefore precede completed settlement. A fulfilled order with unresolved settlement is not automatically a successful payment.

Upfront flow
Settle before executing the resource operation. This gives the server committed payment state before fulfillment, so a settlement record may exist while the order is not yet fulfilled.
Escrow flow
An initial settle commits a deposit or ceiling, the resource operation runs, and a later settle records the final charge. Interpret the initial and later settlement events according to the scheme rather than treating them as interchangeable.

/verify checks payment authorization without committing payment state or writing on-chain state. /settle durably commits state for the request. Depending on scheme and flow, that may involve a transaction, an escrow step, a charge record, or binding a prepaid proof. A successful verification alone does not establish that settlement completed.

Define what counts as sufficient settlement evidence for the application’s order semantics. Store the facilitator’s settlement result and any transaction hash or other settlement reference it returns; do not invent a transaction reference where the scheme does not provide one. The expected evidence depends on the scheme, network, and implementation described in the V2 specification.
Link each payment attempt to its order
Create a durable relationship between an application order ID and an internal payment-attempt ID. An order can have retries or more than one attempt, so avoid relying on timestamps or amounts alone to infer which settlement belongs to which order. The following are operationally useful fields, not mandatory x402 protocol fields:
Rank #4
- Easy Account Record Keeping: Keep checks, payments, deposits, withdrawals, and everyday account activity organized in one dedicated check register. Designed for personal, business, and office use, it provides a convenient way to maintain clear and consistent transaction records.
- Clear Running Balance: Keep track of account activity with dedicated spaces for dates, descriptions, payment/debit, deposit/credit, and running balance. The organized layout makes it easier to record transactions and review your account information in one place.
- Flat-lay Spiral Binding: The spiral-bound design allows the register to lay flat while writing, providing a comfortable writing surface without constantly holding pages down. Convenient for recording transactions at home, in the office, or while managing accounts on the go.
- Durable Cover for Daily Use: Built with a durable cover to help keep your check register neat during regular use and storage. Its practical design makes it easy to keep in a desk, drawer, bag, or briefcase while maintaining organized payment and deposit records.
- Reconciliation & Summary Sections: Dedicated sections at the back provide space for reviewing account activity, reconciling transactions, and recording financial summaries. Keep important account records together and make routine financial record keeping more organized and convenient.
- Correlation: application order ID, internal payment-attempt ID, and retry or idempotency information.
- Payment context: x402 version, scheme, network, and resolved payment flow.
- Expected terms: asset, amount, and pay-to destination from the selected payment requirements.
- Authorization evidence: verification result and timestamp, explicitly separate from settlement.
- Settlement evidence: response status, transaction hash or other reference when provided, and submission and confirmation timestamps where applicable.
- Fulfillment: state and timestamp, plus whether the selected flow permits fulfillment before final settlement.
- Operational context: facilitator identity or endpoint configuration.
Use the scheme’s data model and your own order semantics when mapping fields. Do not assume that a field or status meaningful in one scheme has the same interpretation in another.
Reconcile records and route exceptions
A reconciliation job or event consumer can compare each order’s expected payment requirement with the linked settlement result. Preserve the raw response or a suitably auditable record alongside normalized fields so an operator can investigate a mismatch without losing the original evidence.

- Fulfilled, settlement unresolved: investigate whether the selected flow allows fulfillment before final settlement, and check for a pending, failed, or timed-out settlement operation.
- Settlement recorded, no matching order: check correlation and retry handling; do not silently attach the record based only on a similar amount or timestamp.
- Terms or identity mismatch: flag differences in network, asset, amount, destination, or transaction identity against the expected payment and order.
- Unexpected event ordering: compare fulfillment and settlement timestamps with the recorded flow before classifying the order as inconsistent.
This is a practical exception taxonomy, not a protocol-defined status list. Keep unresolved cases visible rather than converting missing or malformed evidence into a paid state.
Monitor the signals that expose stuck or mismatched payments
Track attempt counts and age by lifecycle state, settlement latency, pending and failed settlement outcomes, facilitator timeouts, malformed responses, and differences between expected and returned payment data. Include protocol flow and network as event dimensions so a dashboard does not combine flows with different settlement ordering.
Solana Documentation states: “A network error or malformed response is not proof of payment.” Its facilitator guide advises authenticating facilitator traffic, validating every response, using strict timeouts, and failing closed. In practice, a timeout or invalid response should leave the attempt unresolved or failed according to your policy—not settled.
Choose and validate the facilitator arrangement
A facilitator is an architectural role, not a required third party. Teams can use a managed service, operate a separate facilitator, or self-facilitate in the resource server. Compare the options on ownership of operations and network infrastructure, response trust and reliability, supported schemes and networks, and how the application obtains durable settlement evidence. The Solana facilitator guide covers facilitator integration and support checks.
Before advertising a payment option, check the facilitator’s /supported response for the exact x402 version, scheme, and network you intend to use. Support for one combination should not be assumed to imply support for another. Likewise, use the actual selected flow and returned evidence when deciding whether an order is authorized, fulfilled, or settled.
