How to Monitor Website Traffic for Suspicious Automated Requests

Monitor suspicious automated requests at your CDN/WAF or server-log layer, where you can compare request rates, routes, client attributes, automation classifications and outcomes. Establish a normal baseline first, investigate patterns across multiple signals, and begin with narrowly scoped logging or mitigation so legitimate crawlers, users and integrations are not disrupted.

Where to monitor automated requests

Start with the visibility your site already has: CDN or web application firewall (WAF) analytics, application or web-server logs, or both. An edge dashboard can show traffic patterns and security actions; application logs can help connect those requests to behavior at the site. Before interpreting a chart or export, check whether the data is sampled and what time window or retention period it covers. Cloudflare documents these considerations for its Bot Analytics and Security Analytics views.

Monitoring features vary by provider and subscription. Cloudflare’s Bot Analytics is documented for Business and Enterprise customers, and its request-rate analysis tab is documented as Enterprise-only. These are Cloudflare-specific access details, not general requirements for monitoring traffic.

What to look for in the traffic

Request rates over time

Compare an ordinary period with the suspected incident period. A sudden increase or repeated burst may warrant investigation, particularly when it targets a sensitive route. Cloudflare’s rate-limit analysis can group clients using properties such as IP address and, for some customers, JA3/JA4 fingerprints. A high rate is a signal to examine, not proof of abuse.

#1 Best Overall
LANProbe 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet/USB Bypass Network Tap
  • (10/100/1G) Gigabit Bypass network tap / sniffer equivalent to port mirror on a switch.
  • The two monitor/sniff ports are isolated from the network being monitored.
  • Automatic bypass of device on power fail.
  • Power-over-Ethernet (POE) pass-through. Rated at .75A max at 57vdc
  • 5v power through USB3 port or 5v wall transformer (or both). ~500ma consumption.

Routes and methods

Identify which paths and HTTP methods receive the requests. Login, API, checkout and public-content routes can have very different normal patterns and consequences. Analyze them separately; a site-wide threshold may be too permissive for one route and disruptive on another. Cloudflare recommends using request-rate analysis to inform a limit for matching traffic in its guide to finding an appropriate rate limit.

Client attributes and classifications

Depending on your platform and logging configuration, useful fields may include client IP address, user agent, country, request headers, fingerprints and bot-detection fields. A missing or unusual header can add context, but headers can be imitated or absent for benign reasons. Treat it as one clue among several.

midBit Technologies, LLC SharkTap Gigabit Network Sniffer
  • The SharkTap is a special purpose 10/100/1000Base-T ethernet device that allows you to 'tap into' an ethernet connection. It is intended to be used with the free Wireshark protocol analyzer or equivalent.
  • Conventional switches route packets only to the intended destination port, reducing traffic but preventing a third port from seeing all packets. The SharkTap duplicates all packets to or from the Network ports to the TAP port.
  • Supports 10, 100 and 1000Base-T, all ports. Power-Over-Ethernet (PoE) pass-through.
  • Powered from a USB-B cable (included), draws 350mA or less.
  • Other features: Auto-MDIX, so no crossover cables ever needed. Non-conductive enclosure for lab work. Will NOT route packets from TAP to Network ports.

Cloudflare Security Analytics uses categories including Automated, Likely automated, Likely human and Verified bot. These are Cloudflare classifications, not universal standards or a substitute for examining the request and its effect.

Request outcomes

Check whether requests were served by the edge or origin and whether a security control allowed, challenged or blocked them. Where available, sampled request-level logs can help explain an aggregate pattern. Match an apparent spike to the action taken; a chart of requests alone does not show whether the traffic reached the application.

Rank #3
Dualcomm10/100/1000Base-T Gigabit Ethernet Network TAP [ETAP-2003]
  • Network Tap for use with 10/100/1000Base-T Ethernet link
  • Reliable and high performance. Tested with maximum in-line cable length (200m) at full 1Gbps data throughput with no single packet loss
  • Capable of being powered from a computer's USB port with built-in inrush current limiting circuit to prevent the computer from possible damages or disturbances by instantaneous current surge
  • Compatible with Power-over-Ethernet (PoE)
  • Probably the smallest portable GbE Network Tap available on the market

A practical investigation workflow

  1. Choose your observation point. Open the available CDN/WAF analytics, application logs or both. Note sampling, retention and the time range shown before drawing conclusions.
  2. Scope the investigation. Filter to the route, time interval and traffic population relevant to the concern. Compare a representative normal interval with the suspected event rather than relying on a single snapshot.
  3. Look for repeated, connected signals. Review rate, requested paths, client properties, available automation classifications and outcomes together. Check whether the pattern aligns with a legitimate crawler, uptime monitor, internal API or partner integration.
  4. Capture enough context to investigate. For sensitive endpoints, OWASP’s Bot Management and Anti-Automation Cheat Sheet identifies fields such as timestamps, request IDs, route, status code, client IP, ASN, country, TLS and HTTP/2 fingerprints, and user-agent details. Collect only what your security operations need and apply your organization’s retention and privacy requirements.
  5. Begin with observation or a limited response. Log matching requests or apply a challenge or rate limit to the affected route and traffic pattern. Cloudflare documents logging, challenging and blocking as possible actions; its guidance also recommends allowing legitimate automated sources and tuning targeted rules.
  6. Review the effect and adjust. Check whether the suspected traffic continues and whether real users or known services are being affected. Tighten, relax or exempt rules based on observed behavior.

How to choose monitoring tools

When assessing a CDN/WAF dashboard, application logging setup or security analytics service, compare the capabilities that affect your investigation and response:

  • Which request fields and automation signals are available?
  • Can you filter by route, client and time window?
  • Are events sampled, and what retention period applies?
  • Can request data be exported to logs, an API or a SIEM?
  • Can you alert on relevant traffic changes?
  • Can controls be applied gradually by endpoint, with exceptions for known legitimate bots?
  • Which subscription tier enables the features you need?

Available vendor documentation supports these as useful comparison criteria, but does not establish an equal, independent feature comparison across providers. Cloudflare describes its bot approach this way: “Cloudflare’s bot solutions detect this automated traffic and let you decide how to respond.”
