Treat a campaign site as a source for what the campaign says—not as an official source for voting rules. Verify registration, polling places, deadlines, and results with the relevant state or local election office.
What website monitoring can—and cannot—tell you
Monitoring a campaign website creates a record of what was visible at particular times. It does not, by itself, establish why a page changed, who made the change, or whether a statement is true. Nor does checking a website capture everything a campaign communicates: messages may also appear in social posts, advertisements, emails, or other sites.

Decide in advance what counts as a meaningful change for your work. It might be a revision to an issue page, a new endorsement, a changed biography, a fundraising appeal, an event notice, a candidate-filing claim, or a link to voting information. Record observations rather than drawing conclusions from a change alone.
Build a candidate website inventory
Use a source list rather than relying on memory. For each candidate, record the candidate’s name, office, jurisdiction, campaign URL, committee name or ID when available, where you found the URL, and the last date you checked it. Keep the campaign’s site distinct from the government election office’s site.

For a federal political committee with an official website, the Federal Election Commission (FEC) says the Internet address must be disclosed on its Statement of Organization (Form 1). If a registered committee later establishes a website or changes its address, the FEC says it must file an amended Form 1 within 10 days. That guidance concerns federal committee filing obligations; state and local candidates may be governed by different systems. See the FEC’s committee website disclosure guidance.
Use committee records as one check on a URL, not proof that every candidate is listed or that a listed site is still current. If a website address appears to have changed, note the discrepancy and check the relevant filing record where applicable.

Choose a review method and cadence
| Method | Useful for | Limits to account for |
|---|---|---|
| Manual scheduled review | A small list where a person needs to assess context as well as notice changes. | Takes time and may miss changes between checks. |
| Automated page-change alerts | A larger list or routine notification that a page may have changed. | Coverage varies. Dynamic content, images, PDFs, blocked pages, or changes that do not alter visible text may be missed or handled differently. Review alerts manually. |
| Library of Congress Elections Web Archive | Historical context when a campaign site has a preserved capture. | The collection is selected, not a comprehensive live feed. Its description says campaign sites have been archived weekly during election seasons since 2000; it does not promise every site or every change. |
| FEC committee records | Checking disclosed website addresses for federal committees covered by FEC filing rules. | Do not assume all candidates are covered or that a disclosed URL is currently active. |
Set a cadence that fits the reporting question and write it down—for example, a scheduled review every weekday or twice a week. Those are possible workflows, not official monitoring intervals. Record missed checks; do not imply continuous surveillance if you only reviewed periodically. For automated alerts, assess whether the service handles JavaScript-rendered pages, PDFs, mobile layouts, and non-text changes, and whether it retains a useful change history. No particular alert product is endorsed here.

- Start from the inventory. Open the recorded campaign URL and the specific pages within scope, not just the homepage.
- Record the observation. Note the date, time, and time zone, the exact page URL, and the page title. Distinguish the time you observed it from any publication date shown on the page.
- Compare the page. Note changed wording, links, images, or attached documents when relevant. A page can change without its words changing.
- Preserve material changes. Save a screenshot or public document where appropriate, and retain the original URL and method of retrieval. For an alert, open the page and verify what actually changed.
- Label the evidence. State whether the record is a live observation, an archive capture, or your interpretation. Do not treat those as interchangeable.
Keep monitoring to public campaign websites and publicly available records. Do not try to bypass access controls or collect material from private or restricted areas.

Use archives for historical context, not live alerts
The Library of Congress’s United States Elections Web Archive covers presidential, congressional, and gubernatorial elections. Its collection description, accessed October 3, 2026, says campaign sites have been archived weekly during election seasons since 2000. These captures can help establish what a preserved page looked like, but the collection does not claim to capture every candidate or every change, and weekly snapshots are not real-time alerts.
A missing capture does not show that a page never existed or that a particular change did not occur. When citing an archived page, identify it as an archive capture and give its capture date if available; do not present it as the current live page.

Keep a useful evidence log
For each important observation, retain the details needed for another person to understand what you saw and how you obtained it:
- Candidate, campaign, office, and jurisdiction.
- Page URL and title.
- Date, time, and time zone of observation.
- A concise description of what changed and, when useful, a short exact excerpt.
- A screenshot, downloaded public document, or archive reference, as appropriate.
- The retrieval source and method, including whether the page was live or archived.
- Any interpretation, clearly separated from the recorded page content.
This is a practical recordkeeping approach, not an official archival standard. Preserve enough context that a reader can distinguish a direct observation from a later reconstruction.

Verify election-administration claims with election officials
CISA and the U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC) identify state, local, tribal, and territorial election officials as the primary sources of official election information. If a campaign page states a registration deadline, polling place, voting procedure, election date, candidate-filing detail, or result, check the relevant election office and cite that source for the administrative fact. The agencies’ June 2024 guide, Enhancing Election Security Through Public Communications, also recommends current, usable election-office websites.
A .gov domain is restricted to verified U.S. government organizations, but that does not make a campaign website an official election-office source. CISA’s .gov domain guidance explains the restriction. Attribute campaign statements to the campaign, and verify voter-service information with the responsible government office.
Handle disclaimers and campaign claims carefully
FEC disclaimer guidance distinguishes among political communications, including by medium, authorization, and format. It is not a blanket rule for every page on every campaign website. The FEC page accessed October 3, 2026, warns that it may not yet reflect the Supreme Court decision dated June 30, 2026. Treat it as guidance rather than a legal conclusion about a particular page, and consult the current law and applicable rules when reporting on a specific communication: FEC advertising and disclaimers.

If you want a screenshot as part of a repeatable monitoring workflow, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return an image or PDF, and its parameters include options such as full-page capture, viewport selection, and waiting for a selector or network idle. Do not treat a screenshot as a substitute for a dated evidence log or independent verification.
The call below captures a page as WebP. Replace the URL with a public campaign page and provide your API key. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options.
