Drill into user or API-key dimensions where available, and add your own service, team, or feature identifier to request telemetry when provider reports cannot show which product feature created the spend. Keep token counts and billed currency separate: tokens explain consumption, while cost records are the figures to reconcile against invoices.
This guide shows how to do that with OpenAI, Anthropic Claude, Gemini API and Google Cloud, including access limits, time-zone issues, early anomaly estimates and a practical cross-provider workflow.

What token usage and cost reports actually tell you
A token count is a measure of input and output text processed by a model. It is useful for understanding workload volume, rate limits and model behavior, but it is not automatically the final amount charged. A provider may bill different token types at different rates and may add non-token usage such as web search or code execution.

Cost reporting answers a different question: how much money the provider recorded for a period and billing account. Use that monetary report for reconciliation. Treat token totals as an explanation of consumption, not as a substitute for the provider’s billing record.

Four dimensions that usually expose the largest source
- Model: reveals an expensive model, a cheaper model used unusually often, or a routing change.
- Project or workspace: connects spend to an application, environment or business unit.
- User or API key: identifies callers when the provider exposes those fields.
- Internal service or feature: your own stable label, needed when a provider cannot identify a product feature or team.
Rank by recorded cost before looking at request counts. A feature can make few requests but still dominate spend if each request uses a large context, a costly model or additional billable tools.
A repeatable monitoring workflow
1. Fix the period and time zone
Choose a reporting window such as a calendar day, week or month and use it consistently. OpenAI’s usage dashboard displays data in UTC, so convert application logs to UTC before comparing them. Record the selected time zone in the report; otherwise a midnight boundary can make one team appear to own another team’s traffic.
2. Export provider data
Use the native dashboard for a quick view and an API or CSV export for recurring analysis. Capture both usage fields and cost fields when they are available. Preserve the provider’s date, model, project or workspace, and any user or key identifiers rather than collapsing everything into one total.
3. Group and rank by cost
Produce a descending list by model and by project or workspace. Add user and API-key groupings where supported. For each row, retain total cost, token quantities, request count and the reporting period. This lets you distinguish a high-volume low-cost workload from a low-volume high-cost workload.
4. Drill into the top rows
For the largest model or project, inspect which users, keys and internal features generated the calls. Compare input and output tokens separately if the provider supplies them. Look for sudden changes in context size, retries, batch jobs, agent loops or tool calls. Do not assume the most requests are the most expensive.
5. Add an internal attribution key
At request creation, attach a stable identifier such as service=claims-api, team=support or feature=meeting-summary to your logs and tracing data. Keep the identifier controlled by a small registry so names do not drift. Store it alongside timestamp, provider, model, project, API key owner, request ID, input tokens, output tokens, latency and any tool-use flags. This is an operational design recommendation: provider documentation exposes different dimensions, but there is no universal cross-provider feature-attribution field.
6. Reconcile with billing
At the end of the period, compare your grouped estimate with the provider’s cost report or invoice data. Investigate differences caused by time-zone boundaries, delayed usage records, discounts, credits, taxes, non-token charges or data from another organization. Keep preliminary anomaly values separate from finalized billing values.

OpenAI: dashboard, usage APIs and the Costs API
Usage Dashboard
Organization owners and users with the relevant dashboard permission can inspect API activity and usage details. The dashboard offers exports, and one-minute intervals can show tokens per minute. That interval applies to usage, not billing. The dashboard uses UTC and does not combine separate organizations; OpenAI’s help documentation states, “The Usage Dashboard does not combine cost or usage data across organizations.”
Use the dashboard to answer how much activity occurred and when. If your account spans multiple organizations, run the report for each organization and reconcile them separately.
Usage and Costs APIs
For scheduled reporting, OpenAI documents usage endpoints and a Costs API. The Costs API exposes cost values with groupings that include model, project, user and API key. A custom report can therefore produce rankings such as “cost by model and project, then by user” without manually downloading the dashboard each day.
OpenAI’s cookbook describes custom usage and cost monitoring. The default dashboards are sufficient for many users; custom reporting adds implementation and maintenance work, so build it when you need alerts, ownership mapping or a combined internal ledger.
How to read an OpenAI result
- Set the same UTC start and end timestamps in the dashboard, API query and application log query.
- Group Costs API results by model and project first.
- For the top project, repeat the query by user and API key where those dimensions are available.
- Compare the monetary total with the billing record; do not multiply an aggregate token count by a single assumed price.
- Join the provider rows to your internal service identifier using request or tracing data.
Anthropic Claude: console reports and the Usage & Cost Admin API
Claude Console
The Claude Console provides usage and cost reporting for a selected workspace, model and month, with a CSV cost export. Developer, Billing and Admin roles can view the reporting. The console does not currently provide an individual-user cost breakdown, so workspace and model may be the deepest native grouping available there.
Usage & Cost Admin API
Anthropic’s Usage & Cost Admin API supplies historical organization usage and cost data for analysis, reconciliation and alerting. It supports workspace or description fields and daily time buckets. Cost categories can include token usage, web search and code execution, so separate those categories instead of treating every charge as tokens.
The API requires an Admin API credential or another eligible organization-level credential. Claude Enterprise uses its Analytics API. Anthropic documents that these programmatic endpoints are not currently available for Claude Platform on AWS. If your deployment falls into that limitation, use the console or the reporting path provided for that environment.

Anthropic investigation sequence
- Select one workspace and month in the console and export the CSV.
- Rank models by cost, then separate token, web-search and code-execution categories when the data provides them.
- Use the Admin API for daily history or alerting if your organization and credential qualify.
- Use your own request telemetry for user or feature ownership because the console does not show individual-user cost.
Google Gemini API and Google Cloud model logging
Gemini API in AI Studio
For Gemini API usage, open Dashboard > Usage in Google AI Studio. The view is account- and project-oriented rather than a universal cross-provider ledger. Prepay and Postpay billing plans began taking effect on March 23, 2026; rollout and account assignment can vary, so check the live billing page for the account before interpreting a displayed balance or charge.

Supported third-party models on Google Cloud
Google Cloud documents token analysis through Cloud Logging and Observability Analytics. For eligible logged model activity, you can calculate consumption by model, day and user. This is useful when the model call is made through a Google Cloud project rather than directly through AI Studio.
The documented analysis requires a project linked to an invoiced Cloud Billing account that receives an active monthly invoice. A project without that billing arrangement may not meet the stated conditions for the reporting view.
Google Cloud Billing Anomalies
Google Cloud Billing Anomalies can monitor project and linked-billing-account changes, including early anomalies for AI workloads such as Gemini API and Vertex AI. Early anomaly values are near-real-time estimates made before finalized billing. Use them as an alert to investigate, then confirm the event against final cost data.
Provider capability comparison

| OpenAI Usage Dashboard | API activity, usage details and exports | Organization, project and supported user views; API response usage | UTC display; one-minute interval is usage only; separate organizations are not combined; permission required |
| OpenAI Usage and Costs APIs | Custom usage and cost reports | Costs API: model, project, user and API key | Custom reporting requires implementation; default dashboards may be enough for many users |
| Anthropic Claude Console | Monthly usage and cost report; CSV export | Workspace, model and month | No individual-user cost breakdown; Developer, Billing or Admin role required |
| Anthropic Usage & Cost Admin API | Historical organization usage and costs | Workspace or description; daily buckets; tokens, web search and code execution | Eligible Admin API credential required; not currently available programmatically for Claude Platform on AWS; Claude Enterprise uses its Analytics API |
| Google AI Studio | Gemini API usage | Project and account usage | Prepay/Postpay rollout and assignment may vary from March 23, 2026; verify the live billing page |
| Google Cloud Logging and Observability Analytics | Logged token consumption for supported models | Model, day and user | Requires a project linked to an invoiced Cloud Billing account receiving an active monthly invoice |
| Google Cloud Billing Anomalies | Cost-change alerts | Project and linked billing account | Early AI anomalies are estimates before finalized billing |
How to identify the real cost driver
Model mix
If one model dominates cost, check whether it is being used for tasks that a less expensive model could handle. Make that a workload decision based on quality and latency requirements, not token count alone. Record the model-selection rule so a later routing change is visible in the cost timeline.
Recommended Free Tools
Context and output size
Large prompts, repeated conversation history and verbose outputs raise token consumption per request. Compare median and high-percentile input and output tokens for the top feature. A rising output distribution often points to an instruction, schema or retry change rather than more users.
Retries and agent loops
Count attempts, tool calls and loop iterations in telemetry. A request that appears as one user action may create several model calls. Mark failed calls and retries explicitly so they cannot be mistaken for unique product demand.

Non-token charges
Anthropic documents web search and code execution as cost categories in addition to token usage. Keep those categories visible. Similar separation is prudent for any provider that attaches tools or other metered services to a model request.
Ownership gaps
If the provider report stops at project or workspace, join request IDs to your internal service, team and feature labels. Avoid using mutable display names as keys; use a stable identifier and maintain a mapping table for renamed teams or products.

Common mistakes and fixes
Using request count as a proxy for cost
Symptom: the busiest project is assumed to be the most expensive. Fix: rank by currency first, then inspect requests and tokens.
Multiplying tokens by one price
Symptom: an internal estimate never matches the invoice. Fix: use the provider’s cost report for reconciliation and separate token classes, models and add-on usage.
Comparing local time with UTC data
Symptom: daily totals appear shifted by several hours. Fix: normalize logs to UTC for OpenAI comparisons and retain the time-zone rule in every report.
Expecting one organization-wide dashboard
Symptom: totals seem incomplete across OpenAI organizations. Fix: report each organization separately because the Usage Dashboard does not combine them.
Assuming every provider exposes user-level cost
Symptom: a team asks for a user ranking that the console cannot produce. Fix: use available workspace, project or key dimensions and rely on your own request telemetry for user and feature ownership.
Best Value
Treating anomaly alerts as invoices
Symptom: an early Google Cloud alert is booked as a final charge. Fix: investigate immediately but close the accounting period with finalized cost data.
Choosing between native reports and custom observability
Native dashboards are the fastest starting point and usually provide the provider’s authoritative cost view. APIs and exports are appropriate when you need scheduled reports, historical comparisons, alerts or joins to internal ownership data. A custom multi-provider ledger is justified when one team operates across providers and needs common fields such as provider, model, project, service, feature, user, input tokens, output tokens, tool charges and billed cost.
Compare any reporting approach on five axes: whether it shows currency as well as tokens; which grouping dimensions it supports; how fresh the data is and how it reconciles to billing; which roles or credentials are required; and whether it covers one provider, multiple providers or third-party model activity. A tool that offers more charts but cannot reconcile to a provider cost record should not replace the native billing path.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the fastest way to answer “How do I check my token usage?”
Open the provider’s native usage dashboard for a quick view, set a fixed date range, and export the data when you need repeatable analysis. Use the provider cost report, not token totals alone, when the question is how much money was spent.
Why do my token totals not match the bill?
Possible causes include different model rates, input versus output token classes, web search or code execution charges, credits, discounts, taxes, delayed records and time-zone boundaries. Reconcile against the provider’s monetary cost data.
Can I compare users across OpenAI, Anthropic and Google in one report?
Only if you collect a common internal identity or service label in your own telemetry. Native dimensions differ: OpenAI documents user and API-key cost groupings, while Anthropic’s console does not currently show individual-user cost.
Are Google Cloud AI cost anomalies final charges?
No. Google describes early AI anomalies as near-real-time estimates before finalized billing. Use the alert to investigate and confirm the amount with final cost data.
