To monitor a provider’s Terms of Service (ToS), save the URL of its official terms page and set a webpage-change monitor to check it on a schedule. Keep dated versions or diffs, then verify each alert against the live page. A monitor can show that webpage content changed; it cannot guarantee that every revision was detected, determine the change’s legal meaning, or establish that an alert is legal notice.

Set up a reliable Terms of Service monitor

  1. Find the canonical page. Follow the Terms of Service link from the provider’s own site or app rather than monitoring a search result, copied policy, or third-party summary. Record the exact URL and the date monitoring starts.
  2. Choose the page area. If the tool supports selecting a region or element, target the terms text to reduce alerts caused by changing navigation, footers, or banners. If the terms are difficult to isolate or the page layout changes often, monitor the whole page instead. Visualping documents both whole-page and selected-area monitoring, with visual, text, and code change detection: Visualping’s overview.
  3. Set an interval that fits your needs. A scheduled monitor only compares the page when its next check runs, so an alert may arrive after a change rather than at the moment it is published. Choose an interval supported by your service and plan, and balance faster checks against any usage limits.
  4. Choose where checks run. A cloud monitor checks from the provider’s servers and can run while your computer is off. A local monitor depends on your device or browser environment being available. Visualping documents cloud monitors, while Distill describes both local and cloud modes: Distill’s overview.
  5. Enable history and useful alerts. Keep dated captures or version comparisons, and choose notification channels you will actually review. When an alert arrives, inspect additions and removals, then open the provider’s current terms page to confirm the change.
  6. Record your review. For changes that matter to you or your organization, retain the old and new text, the alert or check date, and your notes about what you verified. A diff is evidence of page edits, not an interpretation of their legal effect.

Choose what and how to monitor

Selected text or the whole page

A selected area can reduce noise from unrelated parts of the site. It can also miss a change if the terms move, the page is redesigned, or the selection no longer identifies the right content. Whole-page monitoring is less dependent on a stable selector, but may produce more alerts for layout or surrounding-page changes. Review the monitor after a site redesign or a change in the page URL.

Cloud or local checks

Cloud checks are useful when you do not want your computer to stay on for monitoring. Local checks can be an alternative when a site blocks a remote browser or otherwise behaves differently from the monitor’s cloud environment. Distill’s documentation notes that remote access problems may require proxy configuration or local monitoring: Distill’s change-history guidance.

History, comparisons, and alerts

Before choosing a service, check whether it saves previous versions, shows before-and-after differences, allows alert filtering, and supports notification channels that fit your workflow. Visualping documents alerts with comparisons and cloud checks; Distill documents saved change history and comparisons between historical versions. These are vendor-described capabilities, not independent guarantees of detection or availability.

Review an alert without overreading it

  1. Check that the alert corresponds to a completed, recent check. Visualping’s alert guidance describes alerts as following a new check and comparison; if no new check ran, the notification may not reflect the current page: Visualping’s alert guide.
  2. Open the saved comparison and identify the exact text added, removed, or altered. Separate actual terms text from headers, formatting, navigation, and other page changes.
  3. Visit the provider’s current official terms URL and confirm that the content is still present. A changed page can be corrected or changed again before you review it.
  4. Save the relevant old and new text with dates if you need a record. If the change has significant consequences, seek qualified legal advice rather than treating a webpage diff as a legal conclusion.

Compare monitoring tools before committing

  • Selection: Can you monitor the terms text rather than the changing site chrome?
  • Execution: Does it run in the cloud while your device is off, or locally on your device?
  • Evidence: Does it retain history and provide a usable before-and-after comparison?
  • Alerts: Are the notification channels and filtering options suitable for your workflow?
  • Access: Can it load the actual terms page, including dynamic pages or sites that block remote browsers?
  • Limits and cost: Check current monitor counts, check intervals, alert quotas, and plan terms on the vendor’s own site; these can change.

Visualping’s documentation describes selected-area or whole-page checks, multiple change-detection modes, comparisons, and cloud monitoring: Visualping Help Center. Distill documents local and cloud execution, version history, and possible workarounds for blocked remote access: Distill overview and change history. Visualping’s Chrome listing describes email, webhooks, Zapier, and API alert paths: Visualping listing. Distill’s Chrome listing describes email, SMS, push, Slack, Discord, and webhook actions: Distill listing. These listings and help pages describe vendor features; they do not independently establish monitoring completeness or performance.

Distill’s official page states a free tier with 25 local monitors, five cloud monitors, six-hour alert frequency, 1,000 checks per month, and 30 email alerts. These are vendor-stated limits and may change; verify the current terms on Distill’s official site before relying on them.

Use ScreenshotNeo to capture a terms page

For a screenshot or PDF record of the current page, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It can capture a page, but a one-off capture is not a scheduled change monitor: you still need to arrange recurring checks and preserve dated results yourself. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API details.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Use `–data-urlencode` with the actual page URL, especially if it contains query parameters or other characters that need encoding. Store each capture with a date or version identifier if you need a visual record for later comparison.

Or skip the browser setup

With ScreenshotNeo, one GET request can return a screenshot or PDF. Cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, and failed loads are not billed, and cache hits cost nothing. An MCP server lets AI agents use its screenshot tools. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. It is a capture API, not a substitute for a scheduled monitor or a legal review.

Troubleshoot missed or noisy changes

No alert arrived

  • Check the monitor’s history to confirm that a new check ran after the suspected change. An interval-based service cannot compare a page before its next successful check.
  • Confirm the monitored URL still points to the provider’s current terms page and that the monitor is enabled.
  • Open the page manually and compare it with the monitor’s recorded version. The remote or local monitor may not have loaded the same content you see.

The monitor cannot access the page

  • Check whether the page requires interaction, loads content dynamically, or blocks remote browsing.
  • If available, try a local monitor or a supported proxy configuration. Distill identifies these as possible workarounds for remote-browser access issues in its change-history guidance.
  • Do not treat an error page or incomplete load as proof that the terms are unchanged. Confirm directly on the provider’s site.

Too many irrelevant alerts

  • Switch from the full page to a stable terms-content region if the service supports selection.
  • Review the detected difference to identify whether alerts are coming from navigation, formatting, dates, or other non-terms content.
  • If the page structure has changed, reselect the monitored area and confirm that the monitor now captures the intended text.

What monitoring can and cannot establish

A change monitor revisits a page and compares what it can access with a prior version. That is useful for surfacing possible revisions and preserving a record. It does not establish that every edit will be caught, that the provider has notified you in a legally sufficient way, or what a change means for your rights or obligations. The sources cited here describe monitoring products and their features; they do not establish legal notice requirements or the enforceability of a particular provider’s terms. Treat consequential changes as a reason to read the actual terms and obtain qualified advice where needed.

Terms of Service; Didn’t Read is a separate terms-reading aid: the available secondary reference describes a browser extension that provides summaries or ratings for supported services, but does not establish comprehensive or real-time change alerts. See the reference; do not rely on it as a change-monitoring system without current primary documentation.
