To handle a traffic spike, monitor both what users experience and what the infrastructure is doing, then scale or mitigate only after checking the evidence. Request volume, latency, errors, and queueing show how the service is behaving; CPU, memory, threads, disk use, and queue length help identify where capacity is constrained. Alerts and autoscaling can help, but their response depends on metric timing, configured rules, and how long new capacity takes to become usable.
What to monitor during a traffic spike
Build a view that connects demand to service health and infrastructure. A rise in CPU may accompany a spike, but it does not explain every failure: requests can also stall behind a queue, a database, or another dependency. Microsoft lists CPU, memory, thread counts, queue length, and disk usage among metrics used for autoscaling; AWS describes CloudWatch as a way to collect and track metrics, create alarms, and build dashboards.

- Demand: request volume and, where available, the rate at which requests arrive.
- Service behavior: latency and errors, so you can tell whether increased demand is affecting users.
- Resource pressure: CPU, memory, thread count, disk use, and queue length for the relevant resource.
- Correlations: compare these signals over the same period to see whether demand, service degradation, or resource pressure appeared first.

Choose a meaningful signal and evaluation window
Set alert conditions against a metric that reflects the problem you need to address, and evaluate it over a defined window. A momentary CPU jump may be harmless; an elevated average sustained over time may be a stronger signal. Azure’s settings documentation gives an illustrative rule based on average CPU over ten minutes. That is an example configuration, not a threshold or duration that suits every workload. Aggregation can reduce rapid scale-up and scale-down oscillation and give new instances time to start. Choose the window and threshold by testing them against the application’s behavior, response time requirements, and capacity limits rather than copying an example unchanged. Azure explains this in its autoscale best practices.
Set capacity bounds and both directions
For a resource that supports autoscaling, define minimum, default, and maximum capacity deliberately. Configure scale-out for rising demand and scale-in for sustained lower demand; a maximum limit helps prevent unbounded expansion, while the minimum should reflect what the service needs to operate. Azure describes these bounds and paired rules in its autoscale settings guidance. AWS target tracking lets an operator select a metric and target, then manages CloudWatch alarms and adjusts capacity toward that target; details are in Target tracking scaling policies.

Check metric frequency and startup delay
Scaling cannot act on a metric before it is published and evaluated, and additional instances do not help until they are ready. AWS recommends metrics available at one-minute intervals to help scaling respond faster, while noting that the underlying metric may publish less frequently. Azure also cautions that autoscaling is not instantaneous. Confirm the actual publication interval and startup time for your resource before setting expectations for response time. If demand follows a known schedule, you can raise capacity ahead of the event using scheduled scaling where supported. Azure gives raising minimum capacity during Black Friday week as an example. For cyclical workloads, predictive autoscale can anticipate demand; Azure describes standard autoscale as a fallback for unexpected spikes or predictive-data errors. What to do when a spike is happening
Use your dashboards and alarms to establish what changed, then verify whether an automated scaling action actually ran and succeeded. An alarm firing is not proof that usable capacity was added. Azure’s troubleshooting guidance points operators to autoscale status, run history, and resource logs to investigate the result: Troubleshoot autoscale.
- Compare demand, service-health, and resource metrics over the period when the incident began.
- Check the configured rule, its evaluation window, and whether the relevant metric was available at the expected frequency.
- Inspect autoscale status and run history to determine whether a rule triggered and what action it attempted.
- Review resource logs to confirm whether the action succeeded and whether new capacity became usable.
- If the service remains impaired, follow the runbook for its architecture. Adding instances may not resolve a database, network, application-lock, or third-party dependency bottleneck.
How to assess monitoring and autoscaling support
Before relying on an automated response, verify the capabilities for the exact service or resource you plan to scale. Provider documentation shows that available metrics and scaling controls vary by resource.

- Which workload and infrastructure metrics are available?
- How often are the metrics published, and what evaluation windows can alerts or scaling rules use?
- Which resources can be scaled, and can you set minimum, default, and maximum capacity?
- Can you configure both scale-out and scale-in, plus scheduled or predictive changes if your workload needs them?
- Can you inspect alarms, scaling history, and resource logs after an attempted action?
- How long does it take for additional capacity to become usable?
Do not assume that a server, hosting plan, or specific resource supports autoscaling. Confirm support and limits in its documentation, then test rules against representative workload behavior before depending on them for an incident.
