To monitor new bids, build a watchlist around the work you can deliver, search SAM.gov for federal opportunities, save and follow relevant searches, and check forecasts for earlier planning signals. For state and local bids, add the official procurement portal for each jurisdiction you serve: SAM.gov is not a universal database for those opportunities.
Define what you are looking for
Before setting alerts, describe your target work in terms that buyers and procurement systems use. A focused search is easier to review and less likely to bury relevant notices in unrelated results.

- Products or services: list the plain-language terms buyers might use, including synonyms and common variations.
- Classification: identify relevant NAICS categories. Federal notices use NAICS classifications, and SAM.gov provides NAICS filters.
- Geography and buyers: specify the states, cities, counties, school districts, utilities, or federal agencies you can serve.
- Contract paths: note contract vehicles that apply to your business and any small-business set-aside categories for which you are eligible.
Use these criteria to create distinct searches with clear purposes—for example, one for a service category and another for a target agency. Revisit the criteria when your capabilities or service area change.

Search federal opportunities on SAM.gov
SAM.gov Contract Opportunities is a free, public search portal for federal procurement notices. You can search without an account. Results are not all open bids: they can include pre-solicitations, solicitations, awards, and sole-source notices. Read each notice’s status and details before treating it as a current opportunity.
#1 Best Overall
- Large area for complete description of work proposed
- Includes space for customer to sign his/her acceptance of proposal.
- 1-part form includes carbons to create 2 part forms if necessary.
- Space at top for company stamp.
- Search using the terms that describe your products or services.
- Apply relevant filters, such as NAICS and small-business set-aside categories. Filter to active notices when you are looking for current opportunities.
- Open the full notice and review its attachments. Check eligibility, submission instructions, required documents, deadlines, and any amendments on the official notice.
- Confirm whether the notice is a pre-solicitation, solicitation, award, or sole-source notice. A forecast or pre-solicitation is not the same as an open request for proposals.
An entity needs active SAM.gov registration to bid on federal contract opportunities. Searching is public, but registration is a separate requirement for bidding.
Save searches and follow notice changes
A SAM.gov user account enables saved searches and following opportunity changes. Set up searches around specific needs rather than one catch-all query, then periodically confirm the filters still reflect your target work and geography. SAM.gov also provides an interested-vendor list and notification help; consult its current guidance for account and notification details.

Use forecasts to plan ahead—not as bids
Procurement forecasts can help a business anticipate likely work and plan outreach or capacity before a formal notice appears. They are planning signals, not solicitations or commitments to purchase; forecasts may change or be canceled. The actual solicitation and its requirements should be tracked on SAM.gov.

Government-wide forecast
The GSA government-wide procurement forecast tool is a public searchable database of anticipated federal procurements. The U.S. Department of Transportation says its new FY26-and-beyond forecasts moved there beginning October 1, 2025. DOT cautions that forecast data is for planning, is not a pre-solicitation synopsis or an invitation for bid or request for proposal, and does not commit the government to buy.
Agency-specific forecast alerts
The DHS Acquisition Planning Forecast System (APFS) presents anticipated contract actions over $350,000 and offers email notifications for records matching criteria such as NAICS, contract vehicle, dollar range, and small-business program. This is an agency-specific example, not a substitute for checking other target agencies. Look for forecast and vendor-notification features on the official sites of agencies relevant to your business.

Extend monitoring to state and local buyers
State and local procurement is decentralized, so there is no single portal established here as a complete source for every jurisdiction. For each place and buyer you target, find its official procurement or supplier portal, create any required vendor account, and configure that portal’s own searches or email alerts.

- Use each government’s official website to locate its procurement portal and vendor instructions.
- Set up relevant commodity, service, location, or buyer alerts where the portal supports them.
- Check portal notices and attachments directly for changes, submission rules, and deadlines.
Do not assume a federal SAM.gov search includes state, county, city, school-district, or utility procurements. Portal features and alert methods vary by buyer.

Scale recurring monitoring with SAM.gov data tools
For a large or recurring watchlist, SAM.gov also links to opportunity data downloads, public reports, and a public API. Its DataBank page describes public standard reports covering active and inactive opportunities, with options to filter, sort, and drill into records. These routes can support a systematic review or internal workflow, but verify current access and available data fields before making them part of an operational process.
Turn monitoring into a reliable routine
A practical cadence separates discovery from bid qualification. Use saved searches and relevant alerts to find notices, forecasts to plan earlier, and the official notice record to make decisions.
- Review new results: check the saved searches and portal alerts you have configured.
- Screen fit: compare the notice with your capabilities, geography, classifications, eligibility, and contract path.
- Read the source record: inspect the full notice and attachments for required actions and dates.
- Track amendments: follow the notice and check its official record for changes before submitting.
- Maintain the watchlist: remove searches that no longer fit and add terms or jurisdictions as your business changes.
No official source cited here establishes a universal number of alerts to expect or a guaranteed alert delivery time. Treat monitoring as a repeatable process, not as a promise that an alert alone will surface every suitable bid.

If you need clean screenshots of procurement pages for internal review or documentation, ScreenshotNeo can capture a webpage through one request. It is a screenshot API and MCP server for developers; it does not replace SAM.gov searches, procurement alerts, or official bid notices.

Cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server gives AI agents tools for taking screenshots, getting page information, and capturing PDFs. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
