Repeat the process on a schedule and compare normalized observations. First check for a retailer-provided feed or interface and review the site’s terms for your intended use; access rules vary by site and jurisdiction.

Start by checking whether the retailer offers a product feed or interface suitable for your use. Review the retailer’s terms and any applicable access limits before automating requests. There is no universal permission rule that applies to every retailer or jurisdiction.

If the required products are present in the initial HTML, browserless HTTP extraction may use fewer resources. If the listing appears only after JavaScript runs or a visitor scrolls, browser automation can interact with the page in a more user-like way. Either approach may need site-specific extraction rules, and page structure or anti-scraping measures can affect reliability. A 2026 study discusses these tradeoffs and argues that the method should fit the task and site, rather than assuming one approach is always best: the study.

Playwright documents ways to advance infinite lists, including bringing a near-bottom element into view, using mouse-wheel scrolling, and adjusting a scrollable element’s position. Build a repeatable monitoring workflow
- Identify the results container. Determine whether the page itself scrolls or whether products sit inside a nested, scrollable panel. Locate a product card, loader, or sentinel near the bottom of the relevant area.
- Trigger another load. Scroll the document or the nested results container. A useful technique is to bring an element near the bottom into view; some pages instead respond to wheel input or a change to the container’s scroll position. Do not assume that a generic jump to the bottom triggers every loader.
- Wait for evidence of progress. Check for new product cards, a changed loading indicator, or completion of the relevant request. A fixed delay is only a guess: it may be too short on a slow connection and waste time on a fast one. No single wait strategy is established for all retailers.
- Extract and validate each offer. Capture a stable product URL or SKU, the selected variant (such as size or color), price, currency, availability when relevant, and observation time. Confirm that the parsed value is a real price; never silently convert a missing or malformed value to zero.
- Deduplicate rerendered cards. Infinite lists may append or rerender results. Use a stable product-and-variant identity to avoid recording the same offer multiple times in one run.
- Repeat and compare. Store observations with timestamps. Normalize currency and price formatting before flagging a change, and compare like with like: a listing price for one size is not necessarily the offer for another variant or the final checkout price.
- Set a stopping condition. Stop when the list is demonstrably exhausted or when a configured work limit is reached. If the page never settles, mark the run as partial rather than reporting it as a complete catalog.
Decide what counts as a price change
Before collecting data, define the exact offer you want to track. A product name alone may not identify a unique offer: size, color, pack quantity, seller, or other selected options can change the displayed price. Decide whether availability is part of the alert condition, and retain the page or product URL needed to inspect an unexpected result.
Store raw observations as well as normalized values. The raw text helps diagnose parsing changes; the normalized amount and currency make comparisons possible. Keep the observation timestamp so that a price movement is not confused with a stale or incomplete run.

Handle incomplete runs and common failures
- No new products appear: You may be scrolling the document when the results are inside a nested panel, or vice versa. Identify the active scroll container and trigger the load there. Also check whether the site reached the end of its list.
- The monitor stops before the list ends: The wait condition may be tied to a fixed delay rather than new cards, a loader transition, or a request. Wait for a meaningful signal and report a partial result if the list remains unsettled.
- Prices are missing or implausible: The page may have changed its structure, rendered content dynamically, or displayed a different variant than expected. Validate extracted values and treat absent prices as extraction failures, not zero-cost items.
- The same item appears repeatedly: The list may rerender cards as it loads. Deduplicate using a stable product identifier plus the selected variant.
- Reported changes do not match the offer: Check currency formatting, variant, availability, seller, and whether the displayed listing price differs from the checkout price. Compare only equivalent offers.
- Automation is blocked or behaves inconsistently: Site structure and anti-scraping mechanisms can affect extraction. Recheck the site’s permitted access methods and terms, and consider an authorized feed or interface where available.
Understand accuracy, performance, and maintenance
Browser automation can execute JavaScript and interact with scroll behavior, but it uses browser resources. Browserless extraction can be lighter when the needed content is exposed directly, but may miss content created in the browser or require site-specific rules. Price extraction is vulnerable to changing page structure and dynamically generated content, so build in validation and failure reporting rather than treating a successful page load as proof of a successful price capture.
A 2026 study by Evgeniia Kositsyna and Jorge Lloret-Gazo reported 87.3% precision for its combined genetic-algorithm and Bayesian-weighting system on its own test set, compared with 83.5% for its Bayesian configuration and 77.2% for its baseline; each reported 98.75% coverage. The authors also reported average processing times of 0.533 seconds per page for the combined system and 0.620 seconds for the baseline. These are study-specific results, not expected accuracy or speed for a new retailer or an infinite-scroll monitor. Read the study.

Can I monitor an infinite-scroll page without a browser?
Sometimes. Browserless extraction can work when the required product data is directly available, but it may miss content generated by JavaScript or scrolling. Choose based on how the specific page exposes its data.

Does reaching the bottom of the page guarantee that every product loaded?
No. Some sites use a nested results container or a loader that responds to bringing an element into view, wheel input, or another specific action. Verify that new cards appeared and set a stopping condition.
Can a screenshot API by itself track prices over time?
No. A screenshot captures page appearance; a monitor still needs stable product and variant identification, price extraction and validation, timestamps, and comparison logic.
