For a Shopify store you control, the most dependable route is to subscribe to product-change webhooks through an authorized app, save a timestamped price history for each variant, and periodically reconcile that history against the current Admin API state. For a storefront you do not control, you can observe only data it makes available to buyers or the public; you cannot use its merchant-side Admin API or webhook subscriptions.
Choose the right monitoring route
A headless storefront changes how a shop presents products, not who has permission to access merchant data. Shopify describes the Storefront API as a way to build buyer-facing commerce experiences, while the Admin API is the merchant-side interface for store data. Those are different access boundaries, not interchangeable ways to monitor any shop. See Shopify’s Storefront API reference and Shopify’s API overview.

Define what counts as a price change
A product can have several variant prices, and the price shown to a buyer may vary with country, currency, market, or buyer context. A comparison is meaningful only when those inputs are held constant. Shopify’s Storefront API exposes contextualized price amounts, and its headless guide documents product filtering by price and availability; verify the current requirements for the API version you deploy in the collection filtering guide.
For each observation, record at least:
- Product ID and variant ID, plus the selected option values.
- Price amount and currency.
- The country, market, or other buyer context used for the read.
- Observation timestamp and source, such as a webhook-triggered read or scheduled API check.
Do not alert merely because a product-level range changes if the underlying variant, currency, or context is different. Compare the same variant and buyer context first.

Set up event-driven monitoring for a shop you control
- Authorize an app. Use an app with only the catalog-reading permissions and applicable product-update webhook subscriptions needed for your use case. Check the current supported API version, scopes, and event schema in Shopify’s documentation.
- Subscribe to relevant product updates. Shopify documents product changes, including price changes, as a webhook use case. Webhooks let an app respond to events rather than repeatedly polling just to discover whether something changed. See the webhook reference and Shopify’s webhook setup guidance.
- Verify and acknowledge deliveries. Apply Shopify’s current request-verification instructions. Acknowledge valid deliveries promptly, then enqueue durable processing rather than doing slow work inside the request handler.
- Process events safely. Assume a delivery can be repeated or delayed. Make processing idempotent and use an event identifier or deduplication key when available. Store the prior value so repeated observations are not mistaken for new changes.
- Persist history. Keep append-only price observations or change records keyed by product and variant, including amount, currency, buyer context, source, and timestamp.
- Reconcile periodically. Read the current authorized API state on a schedule and compare it with stored state. This catches missed deliveries, subscription changes, application outages, and processing bugs. A webhook stream is an event mechanism, not a guaranteed complete historical ledger.
- Alert only on meaningful differences. Apply business thresholds after matching variant, currency, and context. Include the old and new values, observation time, product link, and context in the notification.
Monitor a storefront you do not control
For a competitor or other third-party shop, stay on the buyer-facing side of the boundary. You may use publicly exposed Storefront API data where access is available, or inspect the rendered public page if that is the actual price you need. Neither approach grants access to the shop’s Admin API or merchant webhooks.
Shopify states that automated Storefront API traffic and crawlers are limited, with stricter treatment for unsigned traffic. Do not assume limits intended for ordinary buyer traffic apply to a crawler. Review the current Storefront API documentation, use measured requests, cache results, and respect applicable terms and controls. The reviewed documentation does not establish a universal safe polling interval.

Keep the integration observable
Watch webhook delivery failures, handler errors, queue depth, the timestamp of the last successful reconciliation, and whether the subscription remains active. Shopify warns that a webhook subscription can be automatically deleted if its destination repeatedly returns a non-200 status. The Shopify Dev Dashboard provides monitoring and logs for webhooks, functions, and app events; this helps diagnose the integration but is separate from your price-history store. Shopify’s API documentation describes these dashboard capabilities.

Troubleshoot common monitoring failures
- No webhook events arrive: Confirm the app is authorized, the subscription topic and API version are appropriate, and the endpoint is reachable. Check subscription state and webhook logs in the Dev Dashboard.
- The subscription disappears: Review endpoint responses and restore the subscription after fixing the cause. Shopify says repeated non-200 responses can lead to automatic deletion.
- Duplicate alerts appear: Deduplicate event processing and compare the incoming state with the previously stored value before notifying.
- Price history has gaps: Run reconciliation against the current authorized API state, investigate delivery or queue outages, and record the reconciliation time. Reconciliation can identify current-state differences; it cannot reconstruct an unobserved historical price by itself.
- Prices differ from the storefront: Check the same variant, country or market, currency, and buyer context. A product-level range may not represent the selected variant price.
- Storefront API requests are limited: Reduce request frequency, cache responses, and review current Shopify controls. Do not treat an unsigned crawler as ordinary buyer traffic.
- Rendered-page extraction breaks: Recheck selectors and client-side rendering behavior, and confirm the page remains publicly accessible under its applicable rules. A browser-based observation is inherently sensitive to page implementation changes.
FAQ
Can I get a price-change alert for any Shopify store?
No. Merchant-side Admin API access and webhook subscriptions require authorization. For another shop, limit monitoring to data it exposes publicly and the access rules that apply.

Should I use webhooks or poll the Storefront API?
For an authorized shop, webhooks are the natural event-driven signal, paired with scheduled reconciliation for resilience. For a shop you do not control, public Storefront API reads or page checks may be the only available observations, subject to Shopify’s controls.
Which Shopify API version should I use?
Pin a currently supported version and verify its scopes, event schema, and limits when implementing. Shopify’s headless filtering guide specifies version 2022-01 or higher for the feature it describes; that is not a recommendation to deploy that older version now.
