To monitor a password-protected website, the monitoring check must either replay the login steps or use an authenticated browser session that is still valid. Choose a local or cloud workflow, sign in with an account you are authorized to use, select the page content that matters, and verify that checks reach the signed-in page rather than a login screen. Login forms, session expiry, and site-specific security challenges can prevent automation from working, so no method is guaranteed for every site.
Choose how the monitor will stay signed in
There are three common approaches. Which one fits depends on where the checks run, how the site authenticates users, and whether the session remains valid.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| Approach | How it works | Best fit | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Replay login actions | The monitor opens the login page, fills in the username and password fields, and submits the form. | A stable, straightforward login form that the tool can interact with. | Form changes, delayed loading, or additional security steps can interrupt the sequence. Vendor instructions document this workflow but do not establish universal support for MFA, CAPTCHA, or single sign-on. Visualping’s guide and changedetection.io’s tutorial describe login actions or browser steps. |
| Save an authenticated cloud session | Sign in through a remote browser or cloud device so later checks can reuse its cookies. | Cloud checks when the monitoring service offers a way to establish and retain its own signed-in session. | Cookies can expire and need to be saved again. Cookies on your personal computer are not automatically available to a separate cloud browser. Distill documents these distinctions and notes that its Profiles have been deprecated in favor of Dedicated Cloud Devices: Distill cloud-profile documentation. |
| Check locally in your browser | A browser extension uses the cookies in the browser where you are already signed in. | When the session already lives in your browser and you can leave the device available for checks. | Local checks depend on the device and browser being on; if the device is off, the extension cannot perform its checks. See Distill’s Chrome extension guide. |
Before choosing, check the monitor’s current instructions and whether the site’s login flow is compatible. Vendor documentation describes particular workflows, not guaranteed compatibility with every protected site.

- Confirm authorization. Monitor only pages and accounts you are permitted to access, and follow the site’s rules. Avoid overly frequent automated logins; changedetection.io cautions that logging in every minute could get a user blocked. Read its login-monitoring guidance.
- Choose a local or cloud check. Use local monitoring if the tool can use the authenticated session in your browser and your device can remain available. Choose a cloud workflow if the service lets you sign in remotely or configure login actions for its own browser.
- Establish authentication. For an action-based setup, create the monitor at the login page, add steps to enter the username or email and password, then submit the form. Add a wait if the site needs time to load. Visualping also documents hiding sensitive text input after entry. See Visualping’s instructions. Distill describes recording a macro for login steps or saving cookies from an authenticated cloud session: Distill’s login walkthrough.
- Choose what to watch. Select the relevant text, element, or page region where the tool allows it. A focused selection can avoid alerts caused by unrelated page changes. Distill supports full-page or selected-part monitoring, and Visualping describes whole-page or specific-element monitoring in their respective guides.
- Set a sensible schedule and alert. Pick a cadence that suits how often the content changes and the site’s rules. Configure the available notification options; local-extension notification methods may depend on the subscription plan, according to Distill’s extension documentation.
- Verify the first check. Inspect the result to confirm the monitor reached the signed-in content and selected the intended region. If it instead shows a login page or an error, refresh the login flow or authenticated session before relying on alerts. This validation is prudent because documented failure modes include expired cookies and broken macros.
Keep authentication reliable
When using login actions or a macro
Recorded actions rely on page elements remaining recognizable. Distill says an EMACRO error can occur when expected elements are missing or the page layout changes. If checks begin failing after a site redesign, inspect the sequence, update the affected actions, and run a fresh check.

- Used Book in Good Condition
When using saved cookies
A saved session is only useful while its cookies remain valid. Distill warns that expired cookies must be saved again. When a cloud monitor starts returning a login page, establish the session again using the service’s current cloud-device workflow; do not assume that cookies from your personal browser have transferred to the cloud.
When using a local browser
Keep the browser and device available at the scheduled times. A local extension cannot check while its device is off. If checks stop without a site-side change, check that the browser is running and still signed in.

Troubleshoot failed checks and noisy alerts
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The monitor captures the login page | The login actions did not complete, or a saved session expired. | Review the login sequence and any waits; for a cookie-based cloud session, sign in again and save the renewed session. |
| A macro reports EMACRO or stops at an expected step | The expected page element is missing or the layout changed. | Inspect the page and update the affected macro actions, then verify a new check. |
| A local check does not run | The browser’s device may be off or unavailable. | Make the device available for scheduled checks or use a cloud method if it supports the login flow. |
| Alerts report irrelevant changes | The monitor watches too much of the page. | Change the selection to the specific content or element that matters, if supported. |
| The site blocks or challenges repeated checks | The check cadence may be too aggressive or the site’s security controls may not permit the automation. | Reduce frequency, follow the site’s rules, and do not try to bypass access controls. Some login systems may not be automatable by the chosen tool. |

For a one-off screenshot of a page you can access, ScreenshotNeo offers a screenshot API and an MCP server for AI agents. It is not a password-monitoring service: the following request does not configure a recurring authenticated monitor. Its API supports custom headers and cookies, but the request alone does not guarantee access to a protected page; site-specific authentication or security challenges may still apply.
