The safest way to monitor a NAS SSD is to combine three kinds of evidence: the NAS’s health and endurance alerts, the drive’s SMART data and tests, and errors recorded while the storage pool is being used. No single “life remaining” percentage is a guaranteed countdown. Record readings over time, verify backups and redundancy, and plan a compatible replacement before the drive reaches a critical state.

What NAS SSD health information actually tells you

A NAS can expose several different measurements, and they answer different questions:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Overall health status: a platform judgment based on drive-reported information, tests and detected errors.
  • SMART attributes and test results: diagnostic data supplied by the drive. A passed test is useful evidence, not a promise that the SSD cannot fail later.
  • Endurance or estimated life remaining: an estimate of consumed write life. Its calculation depends on the SSD’s reported attributes, the NAS software and the workload.
  • NAS and pool errors: I/O errors, checksum errors, read failures and similar events observed during normal operation.

These signals can disagree. An SSD may show a healthy status while its estimated endurance is falling, or a high remaining-life figure may coexist with pool errors caused by a controller, cable, backplane or filesystem problem. Investigate the complete pattern rather than replacing a drive solely because one number changed.

First, identify every SSD and its role

Before interpreting a percentage or scheduling a replacement, make an inventory for each drive. The same model can behave differently as a pool member, cache device or other supported role, and NAS software does not expose identical attributes for every interface.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • NAS model and installed operating-system version
  • Pool, RAID group, cache or other role
  • Exact SSD model, capacity and firmware revision
  • Interface and form factor, such as 2.5-inch SATA or M.2 NVMe
  • Drive serial number and bay or slot
  • Current health status, temperature and endurance estimate
  • SMART attributes, previous tests and recent error history

Save this baseline in a spreadsheet or monitoring system. Include the date, total host writes or other workload figure shown by the NAS, and a screenshot or export of the health page. A baseline lets you distinguish a gradual wear trend from a sudden reporting change after a firmware or software update.

Use the NAS health page as your daily starting point

Open the storage manager or disk-health area and inspect each SSD individually. Names differ by product and software version, but the useful fields are consistent:

  1. Check the overall state. Note healthy, warning, degraded, failing or failed labels and any reason attached to the status.
  2. Review SMART information. Look for media errors, critical warnings, unsafe shutdowns, temperature history and the vendor’s wear or percentage-used attributes where available.
  3. Read the endurance estimate. Record both the value and its date. If the field is blank or unavailable, do not treat that as zero life; it may mean the drive does not expose the TBW, SMART or NVMe health data required by the platform.
  4. Inspect test history. A failed or interrupted test deserves investigation, as does a new test result that differs sharply from earlier results.
  5. Check alerts and event logs. Correlate drive warnings with pool, filesystem, controller and temperature events.

Keep the original drive-reported values when possible. A NAS may translate vendor attributes into simpler labels, and that translation can change between software releases.

Schedule SMART tests without creating a maintenance conflict

Short and extended SMART tests can reveal read or media problems that are not visible in an idle status page. Schedule the tests at a predictable interval supported by your platform, then review the result rather than merely enabling the schedule.

On TrueNAS, the documented health-management workflow includes SMART polling and scheduled tests. Its guidance warns against overlapping tests with pool scrubs or snapshot creation and removal, because simultaneous work increases I/O load and can make results harder to interpret. Use the stable-version selector in the TrueNAS Drive Health Management documentation before applying exact menu names; the page includes version-specific and development-change notices.

For any NAS:

  • Run tests when the pool is not performing a backup, scrub, large snapshot operation or intensive write job.
  • Record whether the test completed, failed or was aborted.
  • Investigate repeated failures instead of dismissing a single warning as a scheduling glitch.
  • Keep an offline or otherwise independent backup before deliberately running destructive or repair operations.

Platform-specific details and limitations

QNAP: estimated life is not the same as health status

QNAP’s SSD Estimated Life Remaining Warning FAQ, modified March 30, 2022, applies to NAS series using firmware 4.4.1 or later. It says that when estimated life reaches 0, “it is recommended to replace the disk to avoid any potential data loss.” Treat that as QNAP-specific guidance, and confirm current labels in the documentation for your installed QTS release.

QNAP also states that the SSD estimated-life display does not itself change disk health status or trigger a SMART migration. In QES 2.2.x, Disk Health Information explains that life can be calculated from TBW and average daily writes, taken from a drive-reported life attribute or NVMe health information, or shown as unavailable when the necessary inputs are missing. The QES formula and interface should not be assumed to describe every current QNAP operating system.

Synology: workload can move the estimate

Synology’s Knowledge Center says, “The estimated endurance of a Synology SSD is based on its recent workload.” A changing workload can therefore extend or shorten the estimate. A newly installed SSD may need at least 24 hours before an estimate appears.

The Configure Drive Settings documentation describes monthly drive-health reports and a configurable SSD endurance notification. Enable the reports and choose a notification threshold that gives you time to verify backups, order a compatible drive and schedule the work. Menu names and available settings vary by product and software version.

TrueNAS: include ZFS events and resilver behavior

TrueNAS health monitoring adds evidence from the pool itself. In addition to SMART data and scheduled tests, review ZFS events and alerts generated during active reads and writes. Check the applicable stable release of the Drive Health Management documentation because functionality and labels are version-specific, including changes documented for TrueNAS 25.10 and later.

When a failed disk in an existing VDEV is replaced, TrueNAS automatically starts a pool resilver according to its disk replacement guidance. A resilver consumes storage and time while redundancy is reduced, so confirm that backups are current and that the replacement procedure matches the VDEV layout before removing a disk.

Trend endurance instead of treating it as a deadline

Make a dated record at regular intervals—monthly is practical for many home and small-business systems, while high-write systems may need more frequent review. Track:

  • Estimated life or percentage used
  • Total bytes written, average daily writes or the workload value exposed by the NAS
  • SMART critical warnings, media errors and unsafe shutdown counts
  • Temperature and thermal warnings
  • Pool checksum, read, write and I/O errors
  • Test type, date and result

Compare several observations. A steady decline under a stable workload is more informative than one isolated percentage. A sudden jump can reflect a recalculation, firmware change or newly available drive data rather than a physical event. Conversely, a stable percentage does not override repeated I/O errors or a failed health test.

Endurance estimates are workload-dependent. Two identical SSDs can show different projections in different NAS roles, and two vendors can calculate “life remaining” from different attributes. There is no independently established, cross-vendor failure-rate statistic or universal rule such as “replace every SSD at 20%.”

When to investigate or start a replacement

Investigate promptly

  • The NAS reports failing, failed, degraded or critical health.
  • SMART tests repeatedly fail or cannot complete.
  • Critical warnings, media errors, uncorrectable errors or rapidly increasing error counters appear.
  • The pool records I/O or checksum errors associated with the disk.
  • Temperature warnings persist after checking airflow, fans and ambient conditions.
  • The vendor’s endurance estimate reaches its warning threshold or falls rapidly relative to your baseline.

Prepare before the drive is exhausted

A low estimate without errors is a planning signal, not proof of imminent failure. Use the lead time to verify a restorable backup, confirm redundancy, obtain a tested replacement and choose a maintenance window. If the estimate reaches zero, follow the platform vendor’s replacement guidance rather than waiting for a visible failure.

Do not ignore a “healthy” label

Flash memory, controllers, firmware and power conditions can fail without a long SMART countdown. A healthy label means the reported checks have not crossed that platform’s thresholds; it cannot guarantee future operation. Maintain backups and monitor pool events even when every drive says healthy.

Choose a replacement for the NAS, not merely for the slot

Confirm compatibility before comparing advertised speed or endurance. Use the NAS manufacturer’s compatibility list for the exact model, firmware family and intended role. Then compare candidates on equivalent terms:

Decision factor What to verify Why it matters
Compatibility Exact NAS model, supported drive list, role restrictions and firmware requirements An SSD that fits physically may still be unsupported or unsuitable for a cache or pool.
Interface and form factor 2.5-inch SATA, M.2 NVMe or another supported type Interfaces and physical formats are not interchangeable.
Capacity Supported capacity and the pool’s replacement rules Some pools require the replacement to meet a minimum usable size.
Endurance Manufacturer TBW or workload rating, with the stated workload standard TBW figures measured under different workloads are not directly equivalent.
Workload protection Suitability for write intensity and features such as power-loss protection Write-heavy databases, surveillance or virtualization workloads impose different risks than light file storage.
Warranty and support Current warranty length, endurance limit and regional terms Coverage may end when the endurance limit is reached, even if the calendar period has not elapsed.
Recovery impact Redundancy, expected rebuild or resilver time and maintenance window The pool may be less protected while data is reconstructed.

As a product-specific example, Synology’s Enterprise Series 2.5-inch SATA SSD page lists capacity-specific TBW figures ranging from more than 900 TBW to more than 10,000 TBW, calculated using the JESD219A enterprise workload. It also lists a five-year limited warranty subject to endurance use and DSM lifetime analytics. Those figures apply to the particular capacity and model shown on that page; they are not a universal range for every NAS SSD and do not establish compatibility with every NAS.

Replacement workflow and recovery precautions

  1. Confirm the diagnosis. Save logs and SMART results, identify the exact bay and serial number, and rule out a loose connection, backplane or controller issue where practical.
  2. Verify backups. Test that important files can actually be restored. RAID or a mirrored cache is not a substitute for an independent backup.
  3. Check redundancy and pool status. Do not remove a disk from a healthy pool without understanding whether the platform supports online replacement and what protection remains.
  4. Obtain a compatible drive. Match interface, form factor, minimum capacity and role requirements; update firmware only according to the NAS or drive vendor’s instructions.
  5. Use the platform’s replacement command or wizard. Follow the current stable documentation for your version. Do not improvise by formatting the disk or changing partition layout unless the platform explicitly requires it.
  6. Monitor reconstruction. Watch resilver, rebuild or migration progress, temperatures and new errors. Avoid unnecessary heavy workloads until redundancy is restored.
  7. Validate after completion. Confirm the pool is healthy, run the platform’s recommended verification or scrub, and add the new SSD to your monitoring baseline.

For TrueNAS, replacing a failed disk in an existing VDEV automatically starts a resilver. The duration depends on pool layout, used space, workload and device performance; the documentation does not provide a universal completion time. Keep the system powered and avoid interrupting the process unless the current release instructions tell you to do so.

Assuming “unavailable” means “dead”

Some drives do not expose the TBW, SMART or NVMe health fields required for an estimate. Record the absence, rely on the other available signals and check whether a firmware or software update changes reporting.

Running every test at once

Overlapping SMART tests with scrubs, snapshots or backups can increase load and complicate diagnosis. Schedule them separately and retain the results.

Buying by capacity alone

A larger SSD with the wrong interface, form factor, endurance rating or support status is not a safe replacement. Compatibility and pool rules come first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Waiting for a hard failure

Replacement lead times, shipping delays and a degraded pool can turn a manageable wear warning into an emergency. Set notifications early enough to complete backup checks and procurement before the warning becomes critical.

A practical monitoring schedule

  • Weekly: review new NAS alerts, pool events and temperature warnings.
  • Monthly: save health, endurance and workload readings; review the platform’s monthly report where available; inspect SMART test results.
  • After heavy workload changes: take a new baseline because recent writes can change the endurance projection.
  • After firmware or operating-system updates: verify that alert schedules, test schedules and drive attributes are still being collected.
  • When any critical warning appears: confirm backups immediately, reduce avoidable writes, collect logs and begin the documented replacement process.

This routine answers the practical questions “How do I check SSD health on my NAS?” and “When should I replace it?” with evidence from your own system rather than an arbitrary calendar interval.
