To monitor minimum advertised price (MAP) across retailer websites, compare observed public listings with the current policy threshold for the exact product, seller, territory, and promotion context. Record each observation with its URL, price, seller, timestamp, and page evidence; then have a person review it. A software alert is a lead to investigate, not proof of a policy breach or a legal conclusion.
Build a reliable MAP monitoring workflow
1. Maintain a versioned policy and product register
For each covered product, record a stable identifier such as the manufacturer SKU, UPC/EAN, or a relevant marketplace identifier; the applicable advertised-price threshold and currency; the territory; the sellers or channels covered; the policy version and effective date; and any exceptions. Keep previous versions when a policy or price list changes so an older observation can be assessed under the terms in force when it was captured.

Do not compare every listing with one undifferentiated global price. Thresholds, currencies, covered products, and exceptions may vary by policy or market.

Start with the authorized retailers and marketplaces that matter to your business. Decide separately whether you also need to discover unknown sellers. A marketplace product page may aggregate several offers, so monitoring only its headline price or buy box can miss seller-level differences. Seller authorization and MAP compliance are separate questions: an authorized seller can advertise below a threshold, and an unauthorized seller can be a concern even when its displayed price is not below MAP.

3. Capture a complete observation
Keep enough context for another person to reproduce and review the check. Useful fields include:
- Exact product identifier, variant, and pack size
- Retailer or marketplace, listing URL, and seller identity where available
- Displayed price and currency, with the promotion, coupon, bundle, or rebate context
- Availability or stock state when relevant to the policy
- Check timestamp and time zone
- A screenshot or equivalent page record
- The applicable policy version and threshold
Priceva describes timestamped screenshots that include URL, date, and price, while Extralt describes extracting price, seller, availability, URL, and timestamp. Those are vendor descriptions, not guarantees that a record will settle a dispute. During evaluation, verify how long records are retained, who can access them, and whether you can export them.
4. Match the product before comparing prices
Confirm that the listing is the covered SKU and configuration. Similar names or images can conceal a different variant, pack size, regional version, or bundle. Ask how a tool verifies automated matches and how it flags uncertain ones for human review. Altosight describes AI matching with human verification, but its matching claims are vendor claims and should be tested against your own catalog.

5. Review each candidate alert
Before contacting a retailer or taking another step, confirm the listing and seller, product match, policy version, territory, displayed price, and promotion details. Check whether the price is publicly advertised or appears only later in the purchase process. Save the reviewed evidence and the decision, and escalate ambiguous cases rather than treating an alert as an accusation.
What counts as an advertised price?
The answer depends on the applicable written policy. In an Enerpac policy example reproduced in an FTC-hosted paper, a price listed on an internet site is treated as an advertised price, while a price associated with an actual internet order is treated as a selling price outside that particular policy. That example does not establish how every brand’s policy treats checkout prices, coupons, bundles, rebates, or other promotions. Record the page state and apply the clause in your own policy.
Enerpac’s example also says that its distributors and retailers are free to sell products at whatever prices they choose. That statement describes the example policy; it is not a universal legal rule or a conclusion about another brand’s policy.

Choose a monitoring approach
Dedicated monitoring dashboard
A hosted dashboard may combine catalog setup, retailer or seller monitoring, alerts, screenshots, history, reporting, and follow-up workflows. Vendor descriptions illustrate the kinds of functions to check: Priceva describes screenshot records, seller detection, CSV/API exports, and adjustable scan frequency; Altosight describes scheduled scans, product matching, seller histories, and country/currency settings; Cobalt describes comparing uploaded MAP prices with active offers and surfacing flags in seller and product views. These descriptions are not independently verified guarantees. Demonstrate the tool against the sites and products you actually need.
Custom data pipeline
A technical team can collect retailer-page data into its own analytics, seller-intelligence, or review systems. Extralt describes this as an option when a team needs control over extraction, storage, and decision logic, while noting that retailer-page changes can break custom scripts. Extralt says it provides collection, processing, and analytics recipes rather than a managed MAP enforcement platform. Compare the ongoing engineering and data-quality work with the convenience and limits of a hosted service.
Questions to ask in a product demonstration
- Which retailers, marketplaces, countries, and currencies are covered, and can you show the actual pages on our list?
- Can the tool distinguish multiple marketplace sellers and preserve seller identity over time?
- How does it match variants, bundles, and region-specific SKUs? Can staff review uncertain matches?
- How often do checks run, and what exactly do terms such as “real time” or “daily” mean?
- Does an alert include timestamp, URL, price, seller, screenshot, and the policy threshold used?
- How long is history retained, and can records be exported in usable formats or through an API?
- How are checkout-only prices, coupons, bundles, out-of-stock products, and inaccessible pages represented?
- Does the product monitor only, or also provide a separately configured follow-up workflow? Who approves retailer contact?
- What are the setup, coverage, and support terms?
Legal limits: monitoring is not enforcement
MAP policies are legally sensitive, and the rules can depend on jurisdiction and conduct. FTC guidance describes a distinction between a manufacturer acting unilaterally and competing manufacturers agreeing on restraints or dealers acting together to induce them. It also discusses a historical FTC challenge involving MAP policies in music distribution that were broad in reach and tied to cooperative advertising. The FTC notes that state antitrust laws may differ; international rules can differ as well.

That guidance is not a ruling on your policy or a substitute for jurisdiction-specific legal advice. A monitoring system can preserve observations, but it cannot decide whether a policy or a particular enforcement step is lawful. Have counsel review policy language and escalation procedures, and do not describe a software flag as a proven violation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use browser screenshots as evidence carefully
A screenshot can preserve what a browser displayed at a particular moment, but it does not by itself establish the seller, the exact product, the applicable policy, or what a buyer would pay at checkout. Preserve the listing URL, timestamp, seller and product details, price, and policy context alongside the image. For repeatable collection, agree on the browser state and capture settings, and route any uncertain observation to a reviewer.

Vendor examples to evaluate
- Priceva: Its MAP page describes timestamped screenshots with URL, date, and price; detection of sellers outside an authorized list; reporting and API export; and adjustable scan frequency. Verify the sites and workflow you need in a demonstration.
- Altosight: Its MAP page describes scheduled retailer scans, product matching, seller histories, and country/currency settings. Its matching and coverage statements are vendor claims, not independent benchmark results.
- Cobalt: A help article dated July 2, 2026 describes uploading a MAP price list and surfacing below-threshold offers in seller-compliance and product views. It distinguishes seller authorization from price compliance.
- Extralt: A guide updated September 8, 2026 outlines a MAP workflow and compares a dedicated dashboard with custom extraction. It describes data collection, processing, and analytics recipes rather than managed enforcement.
These are examples to investigate, not endorsements or a verified ranking. The available vendor descriptions do not establish comparable pricing, service availability, or coverage for your specific retailer list.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should retailer prices be checked?
Set the interval according to how quickly prices change and how much review capacity you have; confirm the actual schedule and coverage with the monitoring provider.
Recommended Free Tools
Can a monitoring alert prove that a retailer violated MAP?
No. It records a candidate observation. A reviewer must confirm the product, seller, policy terms, territory, and advertising context before deciding what to do.
Does a below-MAP advertised price mean the retailer must sell at MAP?
Not necessarily. MAP concerns advertised pricing as defined by the policy; actual transaction-price treatment depends on the applicable policy and jurisdiction.
