How to Monitor Live Video Workflows on AWS

For an AWS live-video workflow built from supported services, start with AWS Elemental Workflow Monitor: discover connected resources into a signal map, then deploy CloudWatch alarm and EventBridge rule templates for repeatable alerts. Use the map to see how the workflow fits together, and service-specific metrics, events, and logs to locate faults at ingest, encoding, packaging, or delivery. A signal map is not proof that a viewer received and played the stream, so retain checks at the delivery and player layers too.

Choose the monitoring view that answers the question

Monitoring works best as several complementary views rather than a single dashboard. Workflow Monitor provides a topology-oriented view of supported connected resources. CloudWatch metrics show service health and operating signals; alarms turn selected metrics into actionable conditions. EventBridge can route state changes and alerts, while service consoles and logs help with diagnosis. CloudTrail is useful when the question concerns API activity or auditing.

Workflow Monitor can discover connected resources beginning from a supported service resource. Its supported services include MediaConnect, MediaLive, MediaPackage, MediaTailor, S3, and CloudFront. It can be used as a resource map alone or enhanced with monitoring templates. See AWS’s Workflow Monitor overview.

The signal map shows resources and their connections. The overview page summarizes monitoring state and associated metrics and logs; within a map, operators can review CloudWatch alarms, EventBridge rules, Elemental alerts, metrics, logs, and basic resource details. Selecting a node can open that service’s details. Thumbnail previews may be available for some MediaLive channels and MediaPackage endpoints. These views are useful for orientation, but they do not replace checking each service’s own signals. AWS describes map operation in Using workflow monitor signal maps.

Build a monitoring path from ingest to delivery

Transport and ingest: MediaConnect

MediaConnect publishes CloudWatch metrics for flow health, source health, and outputs. For a connected source, its console reports source bitrate and total packets received. If a source is disconnected, check first whether the upstream sender is transmitting; then verify the flow source configuration, including allowlist CIDR and protocol settings. AWS’s source health guide explains the source view.

Metric applicability depends on protocol and connection. For example, ConnectedOutputs applies to Zixi or SRT outputs, and MediaConnect documents retransmission metrics for SRT or MediaLive outputs. Do not treat a metric as universal across protocols. The service guide says most metrics can be queried with periods as short as one second, while Gateway metrics require at least one minute; these are metric-period capabilities, not a guarantee that every fault will be detected or alerted within that time. Consult MediaConnect CloudWatch metrics for metric definitions and applicability.

Encoding and channel operation: MediaLive

Use the MediaLive console alongside CloudWatch metrics, CloudWatch Events/EventBridge events, CloudWatch Logs, and CloudTrail when investigating API activity. MediaLive metric categories include global, input, MQCS, output, and pipeline-locking measures. Choose the measures that correspond to the failure mode you need to detect rather than alarming on every available metric. AWS says MediaLive CloudWatch metrics are retained for 15 months; the accessed guide does not state a publication year. See Monitoring activity in MediaLive and MediaLive CloudWatch metrics.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

MediaLive can emit channel or multiplex state information and alerts that can be routed through event rules, for example to notifications. Event delivery is not guaranteed: AWS notes, “events are emitted on a best-effort basis.” Use events as a useful notification signal, paired with metric alarms and service checks. Details are in Monitoring a channel or multiplex using Amazon CloudWatch Events.

Packaging and origin: MediaPackage

MediaPackage live metrics use the AWS/MediaPackage namespace and are published every minute or sooner. The v2 guide describes ChannelMQCS and ChannelMQCSSequence for quality, along with egress and request measures. Dimensions can isolate a channel, endpoint, request type (manifest or segment), status-code group, or track type (video, audio, subtitle). Use these distinctions to separate a quality signal from an output-request problem, or to narrow an issue to a particular endpoint or track.

AWS documents a 15-month retention period for MediaPackage statistics in the accessed v2 guide; its publication year is not stated. MediaPackage also supports CloudTrail for API auditing, access logging, and EventBridge events. Follow documentation for the resource model in use: v2 material refers to channel groups and origin endpoints, while older documentation uses channels and endpoints. See MediaPackage v2 CloudWatch metrics and Logging and monitoring in MediaPackage v2.

Delivery and viewer experience

Workflow Monitor can include CloudFront and S3 in its supported-resource view, giving teams a broader map when those services are part of the path. A map alone does not establish that the viewer successfully received and played the stream. Keep architecture-appropriate delivery checks and player-side telemetry so that an apparently healthy origin is not mistaken for a successful viewing experience.

Configure alarms for your workflow, not a generic stream

Workflow Monitor alarm templates let you specify the target resource and CloudWatch metric, statistic, comparison operator, threshold, period, datapoint count, and treatment of missing data. AWS provides recommended templates as starting points; teams can also create custom templates. Monitoring templates can be deployed with CloudFormation. The available settings are described in CloudWatch alarm groups and templates for monitoring your AWS media workflow.

  • 【Package Contents】 Neewer F100 Field Monitor, Mini HDMI Cable, Micro HDMI Cable, Sunshade, Mini Ball Head, AV Cable, User Manual
  • Set the threshold against expected operation. Establish normal ranges for the specific input, output, and workload, then choose a threshold that reflects the impact of a real failure. AWS’s example for a MediaConnect disconnection alarm is an example, not a universal threshold for every workflow.
  • Choose period and datapoints together. A short period can make detection more responsive but may produce noisy alarms; requiring multiple datapoints can filter transient changes while delaying notification.
  • Decide what missing data means. Missing observations may indicate an idle or inapplicable metric, or they may be a symptom worth investigating. Set the missing-data treatment to match the resource and metric semantics.
  • Use events as a second signal, not a substitute. MediaLive events are best effort; keep metric alarms and direct service checks for critical conditions.

Localize a fault by following the path

  1. Start with the signal map. Confirm which supported resources and connections make up the workflow, and identify the first service at or downstream of the point where health changes.
  2. Check transport evidence. For MediaConnect, inspect flow and source health, source bitrate, and received packets. If disconnected, confirm upstream transmission and source configuration before assuming an encoder fault.
  3. Inspect channel evidence. In MediaLive, compare relevant input, global, output, MQCS, and pipeline-locking metrics with channel state, alerts, and logs. Treat event notifications as non-guaranteed signals.
  4. Inspect packaging and requests. In MediaPackage, compare quality measures with manifest or segment requests, response status group, endpoint, and track dimensions. This helps distinguish an encoding-quality concern from an egress or request issue.
  5. Check delivery and playback separately. If upstream services appear healthy, verify the CloudFront or other delivery path used by the architecture and examine player-side evidence. A signal map does not confirm successful playback.

Understand detection delay and signal limits

Compare monitoring signals by where they sit in the path, the metric’s period, what the metric actually represents, which protocols or resources support it, and how alerts treat missing data. MediaConnect supports periods as short as one second for most metrics, while MediaPackage live metrics are published every minute or sooner. These are service-specific behaviors, not directly comparable end-to-end latency guarantees. Event delivery also has its own reliability limits, as MediaLive events are best effort.

Account for monitoring costs

AWS says Workflow Monitor itself has no direct cost. Deploying monitoring can nevertheless create billable CloudWatch and EventBridge resources, store CloudFormation templates in an S3 bucket, and generate MediaPackage preview data transfer. Check current prices for CloudWatch, EventBridge, S3, and MediaPackage in the relevant region and for the design you intend to deploy; there is no single static monitoring cost established here.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your separate goal is keeping a prerecorded YouTube stream live around the clock, StreamNeo is a different kind of tool from AWS workflow monitoring: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it also automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
