Use repeatable browser screenshots to catch unintended visual changes, then use your A/B testing and analytics tools—not screenshots—to decide which variant performs better. With Playwright Test, save a screenshot baseline for each relevant page state and compare subsequent captures in the same browser and operating-system environment.
What screenshot monitoring can—and cannot—tell you
A visual baseline records how a particular page state looked at a particular time. A later screenshot comparison can reveal that the rendered page changed, such as a missing form, an unexpected layout shift, or a changed shared navigation bar. It cannot tell you whether the change was intentional, whether it helps users, or which variant wins an experiment.

An A/B test randomly exposes users to two or more page variants and measures an outcome such as click-through, key-event, or engagement rates. Keep that assignment and outcome analysis in your experiment and analytics setup. Google Analytics describes the experiment model and its use with third-party A/B testing tools in its A/B test guidance.
Choose what the screenshot check should protect
Before recording a baseline, write down which regions should remain visually stable and which are meant to change under the test hypothesis. For example, if the test changes only the hero heading and call-to-action button, the form, navigation, and footer may still need to render normally. A changed hero is not automatically a defect; a form that disappears may be.

- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
- Name the state being captured, including the variant or test condition.
- List the elements intentionally changed by the experiment so reviewers do not mistake them for regressions.
- Identify shared regions and functional content whose appearance must remain sound.
- Decide how the team will review and approve baseline updates.
These boundaries are specific to the page and hypothesis. Avoid masking or ignoring so much of the screenshot that the check can no longer catch meaningful changes.
Capture and compare with Playwright Test
Playwright Test can create local, repository-managed reference screenshots and compare later runs against them. In a test, navigate to the landing page and use toHaveScreenshot with a meaningful name. The first run creates the reference image; later runs compare against it.
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('landing page visual state', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com/landing');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('landing-control.png');
});
Replace the example URL with the page you own or are authorized to test. To monitor two variants, arrange for the test environment to render each named state reproducibly, then give each state its own screenshot reference. The assertion shown here captures a page screenshot; use Playwright’s screenshot options when you need to target a specific element or configure capture behavior.
Recommended Free Tools
- Run the test in the environment where you intend to maintain the reference images.
- Inspect the generated baseline and commit it through your normal version-control review.
- Run the test again after a change. Review the visual diff rather than treating every difference as a failure in product judgment.
- When a visual change is intentional, review and update the reference under your team’s normal approval process.
Keep the rendering environment consistent
Operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode can affect rendering. Playwright recommends running screenshot tests in the same environment used to generate the baselines; see Playwright visual comparisons. Pin or otherwise control your CI environment and browser version rather than assuming screenshots will be pixel-identical across machines.

Make dynamic pages stable enough to compare
Animations, rotating banners, timestamps, changing text, and other volatile elements can make captures differ even when the page is healthy. Playwright’s screenshot assertion waits for two consecutive screenshots with the same result before comparing, and animations are disabled by default for screenshot assertions. Its screenshot styling options can hide or mask dynamic elements, but use them selectively: hiding a changing timestamp may be sensible if it is irrelevant to the check, while hiding the tested call-to-action would defeat the purpose.
Review visual changes in the context of the experiment
A diff means the rendered output changed; it does not establish whether that change is intentional, harmful, or beneficial. Compare each difference with the test hypothesis and the protected shared regions. A changed button label may be the treatment; a shifted or missing form outside the treatment area may merit investigation.
For teams that want hosted visual review alongside Playwright, Chromatic documents a Playwright integration with cloud snapshots and changed-baseline review at its Playwright documentation. BrowserStack documents a Percy workflow for Playwright screenshot assertions and visual change review at its Percy integration documentation. The relevant choice depends on review workflow, integration needs, browser and viewport coverage, baseline ownership, and account terms; the cited documentation does not establish comparative accuracy or current pricing.

Use the experiment platform to assign traffic, define exposure, and report the metrics that answer the hypothesis. Use screenshot checks to protect rendering and to help reviewers understand what changed. An experiment scorecard can be specific to one platform—for example, Google Ads documents a scorecard for its own campaign experiments—so its statuses and controls should not be treated as universal landing-page testing instructions.
Do not infer statistical confidence, conversion lift, or a winner from screenshot diffs. Decide when the experiment has enough evidence using its measurement design and observed traffic and conversion rates. Google notes that reliable test duration varies with conversion rates and site traffic in its A/B testing best practices for Search.

End the test and remove temporary implementation
After the experiment concludes, publish the desired page content and remove test-only elements that are no longer needed, such as alternate URLs, scripts, and markup. Google Search Central recommends running a test only as long as necessary and cleaning up these test elements afterward in the guidance linked above. This cleanup is separate from keeping useful visual regression tests for the final page.

Common problems and fixes
The same page produces noisy diffs
Check whether the runs used the same operating system, browser version, settings, and headless mode. Then look for animation, rotating content, timestamps, or other changing elements; stabilize the page state or selectively mask irrelevant volatility.

The page is blank or incomplete in the capture
Confirm that the test navigates to the intended URL and waits for the page state that matters before capturing. If the issue is intermittent, inspect the page’s loading behavior and test logs rather than accepting an incomplete screenshot as a new baseline.
The screenshot looks fine but experiment results are unclear
That is not a visual-testing failure: screenshots do not measure experiment outcomes. Check traffic assignment, exposure reporting, metric definitions, and the analytics integration in the experiment setup.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a screenshot test tell me which A/B variant converts better?
No. It detects rendered visual changes; use the experiment platform and analytics to evaluate the chosen outcome.
Can I expect identical screenshots on every developer machine?
No. Browser and operating-system environment and other rendering conditions can change the output; keep baseline and comparison runs in a consistent environment.
