How to Monitor Indoor Air Quality and Reduce Pollution at Home

The reliable way to improve indoor air is a sequence: identify likely sources, measure the pollutants that match your question, remove or control emissions, ventilate with clean outdoor air when conditions allow, and use filtration as a supplement. A low-cost monitor is selective—not a complete safety certificate. It may show particles or carbon dioxide while missing radon and carbon monoxide, which require dedicated tests or alarms.

Use a representative monitor location, compare readings during real activities, and investigate persistent patterns rather than reacting to one spike. Test for radon separately, install certified carbon-monoxide and smoke alarms, and treat moisture problems at their source.

What indoor-air monitoring can—and cannot—tell you

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that people spend about 90% of their time indoors (the estimate shown on its 2025 indoor-air guidance page). That makes indoor sources, ventilation and moisture important, but no single consumer device measures every hazard. EPA lists carbon monoxide (CO), smoke, radon, mold, particulate matter and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) among common indoor pollutants: EPA Indoor Air Quality.

Your question Useful measurement or control What it does not establish
Are fine particles elevated? PM2.5 sensor; a particle-cleaning air cleaner It does not detect radon, CO, most gases or mold growth.
Is this room getting enough outdoor air? CO2 monitor interpreted with occupancy and ventilation context CO2 cannot identify an infection, count airborne virus or prove HVAC effectiveness.
Is humidity creating a moisture risk? Temperature and relative-humidity sensor; leak and condensation checks A humidity reading alone does not locate hidden water damage or confirm mold.
Could radon be entering the home? Dedicated short-term or long-term radon test A PM, VOC or CO2 monitor cannot substitute for a radon test.
Is a fuel-burning appliance producing a life-threatening gas? Certified CO alarm, installed and maintained as directed General IAQ monitors are not life-safety CO alarms.

EPA cautions that low-cost monitors detect only the pollutants and environmental factors for which they were designed. Treat every display as one piece of evidence, not as a declaration that the air is safe: EPA guidance on low-cost air-pollution monitors.

A practical monitoring workflow

1. Make a source and activity inventory

For several days, note when people cook, shower, clean, burn candles or wood, smoke or vape, use solvents or fragrances, run a printer, renovate, exercise, or open windows. Record fuel-burning appliances, attached garages, pets, visible dust, damp spots, condensation, recent leaks and outdoor smoke. These events give a reading a plausible cause and show which changes are worth testing.

2. Select sensors for a specific question

  • PM2.5: choose this for combustion particles, cooking emissions, wildfire smoke and fine dust.
  • CO2: use it as an indicator of ventilation in an occupied room, not as a universal pollutant or infection meter.
  • Temperature and relative humidity: use them to spot uncomfortable conditions and moisture-control problems.
  • Radon: use a dedicated test device and follow the test protocol; ordinary IAQ monitors do not measure it.
  • CO: install dedicated alarms near sleeping areas and on each level as required by local guidance; do not rely on PM, VOC or CO2 readings.

For each product, read the list of pollutants it measures and the list it explicitly does not measure. A VOC index, for example, cannot identify every chemical or tell you that a room is free of harmful concentrations.

3. Place the monitor in a representative occupied area

Put the sensor where people spend time, at roughly breathing height, with unobstructed airflow. Keep it away from open windows, supply or return vents, fans, fireplaces, stovetops, humidifiers, chemical storage and a device that is blowing directly onto it. A draft or a nearby source can make the result unrepresentative. If the home has distinct zones, move one monitor between rooms on a schedule or use additional sensors rather than assuming one location represents the whole building.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Establish a baseline, then test activities

Collect readings during ordinary occupancy before changing anything. Add time-stamped notes for cooking, showering, cleaning, window opening, HVAC operation and outdoor-smoke events. Compare the baseline with readings during and after each activity. A repeated pattern—such as PM2.5 rising whenever a pan is heated—is more useful than a single unexplained peak.

5. Verify changes instead of trusting the first improvement

Change one practice at a time where possible: run the range hood, move a cleaner, stop burning candles, or adjust ventilation. Observe whether the same activity produces a smaller and shorter rise over several repetitions. Check the monitor’s maintenance instructions, power supply, firmware and calibration limitations before treating a gradual drift as a real air-quality trend.

How to interpret CO2 without overclaiming

People exhale CO2, so indoor concentrations often rise when an occupied room receives little outdoor air and fall when air is exchanged. That makes CO2 useful for comparing ventilation patterns in a particular space. Occupancy, room size, weather, HVAC operation and sensor placement all affect the number.

CDC/NIOSH states that CO2 concentrations cannot predict who has a respiratory infection, quantify airborne viral particles produced by infected people, or prove that an HVAC system is effectively diluting and removing virus near its source. Airflow directly across the sensor can also produce an artificially low reading. Use the trend to decide when to investigate ventilation—not to certify safety or infection control.

Reduce pollution in the order that works

Control or remove sources first

EPA’s central advice is that “The most effective ways to improve your indoor air are to reduce or remove the sources of pollutants and to ventilate with clean outdoor air.” Practical source controls include:

  • Smoke and vape outdoors, never in the home or an attached garage.
  • Use kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans that discharge outdoors, and leave them running long enough to remove moisture and cooking emissions.
  • Have fuel-burning furnaces, boilers, fireplaces, stoves and water heaters inspected and maintained; keep chimneys and flues clear.
  • Choose lower-emission paints, adhesives, cleaners and furnishings when possible, and follow their ventilation and curing directions.
  • Store solvents, fuels, pesticides and other volatile chemicals outside living areas in sealed, labeled containers.
  • Reduce settled dust with damp cleaning and a properly maintained vacuum; prevent outdoor soil and particles from being tracked inside.
  • Repair plumbing and roof leaks promptly, dry wet materials, and address condensation instead of masking odors with fragrance.
  • During renovations, isolate the work area, keep dust from migrating and follow applicable lead- and asbestos-safety requirements.

Ventilate when outdoor air is acceptable

Bring in clean outdoor air through open windows or doors, outdoor-air intakes, or a mechanical ventilation system. Cross-ventilation can exchange air quickly, while a controlled mechanical system provides more predictable operation. Many forced-air heating and cooling systems recirculate indoor air and do not mechanically bring in outdoor air, so running the furnace fan alone is not proof of ventilation.

Check outdoor smoke, dust, ozone and local air-quality conditions before opening windows. During wildfire smoke or another outdoor-pollution episode, close windows and doors, disable unnecessary outdoor-air intake if the system allows it, and use a clean-air-room and filtration strategy instead of importing polluted air.

Use particle filtration as a supplement

A portable air cleaner can reduce airborne particles, including PM2.5, when its clean-air delivery rate (CADR) is appropriate for the room and it runs long enough to move room air through the filter. EPA explains the benefits and limits in its Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Match the unit’s smoke or particle CADR to the room volume; a larger room or higher pollution load needs more clean-air delivery.
  • Place the cleaner where air can enter and leave freely, not behind furniture or with the outlet aimed directly at a sensor.
  • Run it at a speed that provides useful cleaning while remaining tolerable for occupants; longer operation generally provides more filtered air.
  • Replace a loaded filter according to the manufacturer’s indicator or schedule. A clogged filter can reduce airflow.
  • Confirm whether the unit uses an activated-carbon stage if gases or odors are a concern, and recognize that carbon capacity varies and is not equivalent to universal VOC removal.

Filtration does not remove every pollutant, fix a continuing moisture source, or replace source control and appropriate ventilation.

Manage humidity and mold at the cause

Use exhaust ventilation during bathing and cooking, repair leaks, insulate cold surfaces where practical, and dry wet materials quickly. A dehumidifier can lower excessive humidity, but it must be emptied, cleaned and operated with its drain arranged safely. Air cleaners may capture some airborne particles; they cannot correct water intrusion or remove established mold from building materials. Persistent dampness, extensive growth or hidden contamination warrants a qualified assessment.

Radon: test separately and act on the result

Radon is radioactive soil gas that can enter through foundations and other openings. A general IAQ monitor cannot detect it. Use a dedicated short-term test for an initial result or a long-term test for a better picture of typical exposure, following the kit’s placement and closed-house instructions. Place the test in the lowest lived-in level, away from drafts, high heat, humidity and exterior walls when the protocol says so.

EPA’s action level is 4 pCi/L. CDC reports EPA’s recommendation to use a qualified mitigation professional at or above that level: CDC, Reducing Radon Levels. Follow the test provider’s instructions for confirming a borderline or elevated result and for post-mitigation testing.

Opening windows or increasing natural ventilation can lower a reading temporarily, but CDC states that natural ventilation is not radon mitigation. A permanent system usually requires a qualified professional who can diagnose entry routes, install appropriate sub-slab or other controls, seal openings as part of the system, and verify performance.

Carbon-monoxide and combustion safety

Install certified CO alarms and smoke alarms, test them regularly, and replace batteries and alarm units according to their instructions and local code. Place alarms outside sleeping areas and on each level where required. A PM2.5, VOC or CO2 monitor is not a substitute for a CO alarm.

If a CO alarm sounds, or anyone has headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, chest pain or confusion, leave immediately for fresh air, call emergency services or the appropriate gas authority from outside, and do not re-enter until responders say it is safe. Do not silence an alarm merely because a general IAQ monitor shows a low reading.

Compare devices and actions by capability

Option Best use Key specifications or requirements Important limitation
Low-cost PM monitor Find particle patterns from cooking, smoke or dust PM2.5 sensing; representative placement; trend logging Does not measure radon, CO or all gases.
CO2 monitor Compare ventilation in an occupied space Stable placement; interpret with occupancy and airflow Cannot predict infection or prove HVAC performance.
Temperature/humidity sensor Spot comfort and moisture trends Place away from direct sun, vents and humidifier plumes Does not diagnose leaks or mold.
Portable air cleaner Lower airborne particles Room-appropriate CADR, acceptable noise and energy use, replacement filters Does not replace source control or remove every pollutant.
HVAC filter Filter recirculated air system-wide Correct dimensions, system compatibility and scheduled replacement Most systems do not add outdoor air simply because a filter is installed.
Radon test Measure radon exposure Short- or long-term protocol; follow-up and mitigation support One test reflects its conditions and must be interpreted by the protocol.
CO alarm Life-safety warning for combustion CO Certified alarm, correct placement, testing and battery maintenance Not a broad IAQ monitor.

When comparing products, ask four questions: Which pollutant does it measure or remove? Under what conditions is the rating determined? What maintenance and replacement costs apply? What hazard remains completely unmeasured?

Troubleshoot common readings and failures

PM2.5 spikes during cooking

Confirm the sensor is not beside the stove or in the range-hood exhaust. Turn on an outdoor-vented hood before cooking, use lids and lower-emission methods, and run a particle cleaner afterward. If spikes persist when no activity is occurring, check candles, fireplaces, smoking, dusty HVAC components and outdoor smoke infiltration.

CO2 stays high even with the HVAC fan running

Determine whether the system recirculates only. Check outdoor-air controls, run the bathroom or kitchen exhaust that vents outdoors, and use window ventilation only when outdoor air is clean and weather permits. Do not use a low CO2 value created by a draft across the sensor as proof of adequate ventilation.

Humidity remains high

Look for bathing and cooking moisture, clothes drying, basement seepage, plumbing leaks and an undersized or poorly drained dehumidifier. Dry materials and repair the source; filtration alone will not solve the problem.

A monitor reports an implausible value

Check its power, filter or inlet, operating temperature, calibration guidance and placement. Move it away from drafts and immediate sources, compare with a second device if available, and look for a repeatable pattern before taking structural action.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Outdoor smoke enters despite closed windows

Check door and window seals, bathroom and kitchen fans, fireplaces, dryer vents and HVAC outdoor-air dampers. Create one cleaner room with a properly sized particle cleaner, keep doors closed as practical, and replace overloaded filters. Resume outdoor-air ventilation when conditions improve.

A maintenance schedule that keeps measurements useful

  • Daily or during events: note cooking, cleaning, showers, combustion, renovation and outdoor-smoke conditions alongside readings.
  • Weekly: inspect for leaks, condensation, visible dust and blocked exhaust outlets; test CO and smoke alarms according to their instructions.
  • Monthly: clean monitor inlets and air-cleaner prefilters as directed, check filter loading and review trend logs for recurring sources.
  • Seasonally: service combustion equipment, inspect ventilation paths and confirm that HVAC filters have the correct size and fit.
  • After a repair or mitigation project: repeat the relevant measurement under comparable conditions and retain the result with the date, location and device used.

Seek professional help when radon testing reaches the EPA action level, a CO alarm activates, combustion equipment is suspected, dampness or mold is extensive or hidden, or you cannot explain persistent readings after basic source controls. Bring your activity log and monitor placement details so the professional can distinguish a real exposure pattern from a measurement artifact.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can one indoor-air monitor measure everything that matters?

No. Consumer monitors are selective. Use separate PM2.5, CO2 and humidity measurements for their specific questions, a dedicated radon test for radon and certified CO alarms for combustion safety.

Should I open windows whenever indoor readings rise?

Only when outdoor air is acceptably clean and weather and security allow it. During wildfire smoke or other outdoor pollution, keep windows closed and rely on filtration and a clean-air-room strategy.
