Use separate checks for service availability, host and container health, and alert delivery. An HTTP check can tell you that an app is unreachable; metrics can show whether its host is under resource pressure; an alert can bring the problem to your attention. None of these signals automatically identifies every root cause, and a monitor running inside the same failure domain may go silent along with the services it watches.
Decide what “failed” means
Monitoring works best when each check answers a specific question. A web application may be unreachable while its server is still running, or its URL may respond while performance has degraded. Treat service availability, host availability, and degradation as distinct signals.

- Service availability: Can a user reach the endpoint they depend on? For a web app, an HTTP check against the URL a user opens is more representative than checking whether the server answers a ping.
- Host availability: Can the machine running the service be reached, and is it still reporting metrics?
- Degradation: Are resource use or other measurements changing in ways that could explain slow or unreliable service?
A ping or TCP-port check can be useful, but it answers a narrower reachability question than an HTTP check. A successful ping does not prove that the application itself is healthy.

A simple starting point: an uptime checker
Uptime Kuma is a self-hosted monitoring project that can serve as an entry point for tracking whether selected services respond. Start by checking a small set of important endpoints rather than trying to monitor everything at once. Exact monitor types and notification integrations can vary by release, so check the documentation for the version you choose before relying on a particular capability.

Add metrics to investigate symptoms
An availability check tells you that a check failed; by itself, it does not explain why. Host and container metrics add context, such as resource usage, uptime, and whether a monitored target has stopped reporting.
Prometheus collects and queries time-series metrics. A common pattern is for exporters to expose measurements, Prometheus to scrape them, and Grafana to display the results. In one documented homelab implementation, Node Exporter supplies host metrics and cAdvisor supplies container metrics. That is an example architecture, not a guarantee that every setup will expose the same measurements.
Metrics are most useful when you connect them to the question raised by an availability check. If a service stops responding, compare the timing with host or container measurements, logs, and recent changes. A Prometheus target marked down means Prometheus could not obtain a scrape from it; that status alone does not establish whether the cause is the target, the network, or something else.

When the added stack is worth it
Prometheus and Grafana bring more configuration and maintenance than a basic uptime checker, but they can provide historical context across multiple hosts and containers. The example homelab monitoring stack uses Prometheus, Node Exporter, cAdvisor, and Grafana, with example coverage including CPU, memory, disk, network, load, and uptime. Its README reports a 15-second scrape interval and 30-day retention for that configuration; neither figure is a general recommendation. The README also reports testing its Linux setup on a Raspberry Pi 5, which does not make dedicated hardware necessary or establish that device as superior to suitable hardware you already own.
Self-hosting gives you local control, while leaving updates, storage, backups, access restrictions, and notification delivery to you. Restrict access to monitoring interfaces, keep software updated, and do not reuse credentials exposed in example configurations.
Make alerts reach you and stay actionable
A dashboard shows information when you look at it; it does not, on its own, ensure you notice a failure. Prometheus separates rule evaluation from notification handling: alert rules identify conditions, and Alertmanager groups and routes notifications, with support for silences and inhibition. Grafana documents its own alerting workflow, including alert rules, contact points, and notification policies: Grafana Alerting.

Begin with a few alerts tied to problems that need action, such as a critical endpoint being down, a host becoming unavailable, or resource pressure that warrants attention. Tune thresholds, severity, routing, and repeat intervals for your environment. An example threshold in a repository is a starting configuration from its author, not a universal cutoff.
- Send notifications to a channel you actually check.
- Test the full path, from a triggered condition to the notification arriving.
- Use severity and repeat behavior to keep lower-priority warnings from obscuring critical failures.
Monitor the monitor from outside its failure domain
If the monitoring system shares a host, network, or power source with the services it watches, a failure in that shared dependency can silence both the services and the monitor. An independent external uptime or heartbeat check can help reveal that the inside monitor has stopped reporting. The use case appears in an anecdotal self-hosting community discussion; it is an operational precaution, not a measured estimate of failure rates.
For this check to add meaningful independence, its location or service must be outside the failure domain you are concerned about. If it depends on the same home connection or power, it may not tell you that those have failed. External monitoring also adds a dependency outside your local setup.
Choose a monitoring setup by the question you need answered
| Need | Starting point | What it tells you and what it costs |
|---|---|---|
| Know whether a small set of services responds | A self-hosted uptime checker such as Uptime Kuma | Quick to understand for availability checks; limited explanation of host resource problems. |
| Investigate host or container resource issues across machines | Prometheus with exporters and Grafana; add Alertmanager for notification routing | Richer historical metrics and rule-based alerts, with more setup and maintenance. |
| Know when the local monitoring system stops reporting | An independent external uptime or heartbeat check | Can expose silence from the local monitor, provided it is outside the same failure domain; adds an outside dependency. |
Choose based on what you need to observe, how much diagnostic context you need, how you will receive alerts, and whether the checker remains available when the systems it watches fail. A small, tested set of checks is more useful than a large dashboard that nobody monitors.
