Use the AWS Samples canary monitor to repeatedly fetch and inspect HLS or DASH manifests from your stream origins, then review its reports and metrics and route alerts for actionable failures. It is a data-plane check: it can reveal problems such as stale manifests, parsing or compliance issues, and ad-signaling mismatches, but it does not prove that viewers can play the stream successfully on every device or network.
What the canary monitor checks—and what it cannot prove
The AWS Samples project is a Python tool that repeatedly downloads and analyzes HLS or DASH manifests. Depending on configuration, it can also inspect segments and ad-tracking data, write logs and reports, and publish custom metrics to CloudWatch. It is primarily designed for origins using AWS Elemental MediaPackage and MediaTailor, but the AWS blog says it can work with various origins. See the current repository README and the AWS for M&E Blog overview.

The monitor behaves like a client requesting origin data. It can help identify a manifest that has stopped advancing, format-specific validation failures, or unexpected ad behavior. It is not a player and does not establish that every rendition looks or sounds right, that a CDN path works, or that playback succeeds across your viewers’ devices. Treat it as one layer of observability, alongside player-side or synthetic playback checks.

- HLS: Useful signals described by AWS include manifest staleness, discontinuity markers, and changes such as
EXT-X-VERSIONorEXT-X-TARGETDURATION. The repository also documents HLS program-date-time delta among common metrics. - DASH: Example checks include gaps in the timeline and presentation-time differences between adaptation sets. Repository metrics include DASH PTS and segment-availability delta.
- Segments and ads: Depending on configuration, the monitor can request segments and ad-tracking data. Common metrics include request status and latency, buffer-fill duration, segment duration, and advertised-versus-observed ad-break duration.
The AWS blog describes staleness as no new segment appearing within the configured interval. Its examples are not a promise that every current v3 configuration enables every check. Review the current settings and README before relying on a particular validation.
Choose local or AWS-integrated operation
| Consideration | Local operation | AWS-integrated operation |
|---|---|---|
| Where it runs | On a host you operate; that host must remain available for recurring checks. | Can use an EC2 host, with AWS resources configured for the integrations you enable. |
| AWS account and data flow | The repository says default local input mode does not send data to AWS and does not require an AWS account. | CloudWatch, dashboards, S3 reports, and management resources require deliberate configuration and suitable permissions. |
| Metrics and reports | Review the local logs and reports produced by the tool. | Centralize selected metrics or reports in AWS, subject to configured destinations and retention. |
| Credentials and permissions | Make the endpoints reachable from the host; endpoint credentials or access controls may still apply. | Review current setup files and apply least privilege. The repository describes an IAM role with CloudWatch PutMetricData permission or configured credentials; exact permissions depend on enabled integrations. |
| Cost and performance comparison | The project documentation does not provide comparative prices, measured performance, or a third-party vendor comparison. Choose based on host ownership, centralization needs, access requirements, retention, and your existing AWS observability workflow. | |
These are deployment choices, not separate monitoring products. AWS Elemental MediaPackage also publishes service-level CloudWatch metrics for live content and HLS or DASH endpoints. Those service metrics describe AWS service telemetry; the canary’s custom metrics come from its own requests and parsing of endpoint data. See MediaPackage CloudWatch monitoring documentation.

Set up the current v3 repository
The repository identifies v3 as released in March 2026 and notes breaking changes: configuration now uses settings.yaml rather than the former command-line arguments, and endpoint CSV syntax has changed. Do not use the older command-line setup shown in the August 2024 blog as if it were current v3 guidance. The project requires Python 3.9 or newer and lists dependencies including lxml, deepdiff, threefive, Jinja2, boto3/botocore, urllib3, isodate, python-json-logger, and PyYAML. Check the repository’s current setup instructions for exact installation commands and supported settings, which can change.

- Inventory each endpoint. Record whether it is HLS or DASH, its workload and origin names, whether dynamic ad insertion applies, the manifest URL, any tracking URL, and the checks and thresholds you need.
- Validate access from the monitor host. Confirm that the host can reach the manifest and any tracking or segment URLs it will request. Check required credentials, network routes, DNS, and origin access controls from that host—not just from your workstation.
- Install the current dependencies and inspect
settings.yaml. Start in local mode if that fits your environment, and use a small number of non-production or low-risk endpoints before expanding coverage. - Prepare the endpoint CSV files. In local input mode, put endpoint rows in CSV files under the repository’s
originsfolder. A row identifies endpoint type, protocol technology, workload, endpoint and origin names, whether dynamic ad insertion applies, a monitoring configuration, and the manifest URL; a tracking URL can also be supplied. Follow the current README’s exact v3 field order and syntax. Its example uses a DASH MPD URL. - Run the monitor using the v3 instructions. Use the repository’s current launch procedure and settings rather than transplanting the old blog’s CLI command. Confirm that requests are being made and that logs or reports are produced before adding alert dependencies.
Set cadence, thresholds, and alerts for the stream
Choose polling cadence and staleness thresholds in relation to the stream’s segment cadence, expected delivery delay, and operational objective. A threshold that is too tight can alert during normal playlist refreshes or transitions; one that is too loose can delay detection. The AWS blog’s five-second polling example and stale threshold are historical example values, not universal recommendations. Consult the v3 configuration for supported parameters and defaults.

Let the monitor run through ordinary playlist refreshes, rendition changes, DASH periods, discontinuities, and expected ad behavior. Compare anomalies with origin logs and playback observations before escalating them. Favor alerts that point to an operator action, such as repeated fetch failures, persistent staleness, parsing or compliance failures, or ad signaling that remains inconsistent—not every expected transition.
The repository documents common metric dimensions such as protocol, workload, endpoint, and origin; some metrics also include rendition or request dimensions. Select dimensions and alarm thresholds that match how your team responds, and avoid creating noisy alarms for normal stream behavior.

Enable AWS integrations only when needed
Local operation is possible without sending data to AWS by default. If you want CloudWatch metrics or dashboards, S3 report storage, or related management resources, enable and configure them deliberately. For AWS-backed deployment, the repository describes EC2 hosting and a helper script for host and AWS resource configuration. Verify the current setup files, AWS region, credentials or role, required permissions, and report retention before relying on those integrations. Apply least privilege; the required permissions vary with the features enabled.
CloudWatch alarms can be useful for the custom canary metrics, while MediaPackage’s own CloudWatch metrics offer a separate service-level view. Keep the two signal types distinct when diagnosing an incident: one observes requests and parsed endpoint content; the other reports AWS service telemetry.

Keep reports and pair origin monitoring with playback tests
Preserve reports and, where permitted, relevant manifests around incidents so that operators can compare the observed data with origin behavior. The AWS blog describes archiving as useful for troubleshooting; choose storage and retention deliberately, especially if captured data or URLs are sensitive.
Use a separate player-side or synthetic test to exercise actual playback paths and devices. Apple documents mediastreamvalidator as a command-line utility for HLS stream and server validation, but that is a separate tool and does not by itself prove a successful viewer experience across your device and player matrix. See Apple’s HLS deployment documentation.
Troubleshooting common canary findings
- Manifest fetch errors: Check URL spelling, DNS, TLS, network routes, credentials, and origin access rules from the host running the monitor. Confirm that any required tracking URL is reachable too.
- Manifest appears stale: Compare the alert interval with actual segment cadence and expected origin/CDN delay. Check whether new segments are being published and whether the monitor is polling the intended endpoint.
- Validation or parsing failures: Confirm that the endpoint is configured for the correct protocol and that the observed fields or transitions are supported by the checks enabled in the current configuration. Compare the manifest with origin logs before treating an expected change as a fault.
- Unexpected discontinuity, timeline, or timing signal: Inspect playlist refreshes, rendition changes, DASH periods, discontinuities, and segment timing around the alert. Determine whether the change is expected for that workload before adjusting thresholds.
- Ad-break duration or tracking mismatch: Verify that dynamic ad insertion is represented correctly in the endpoint row and monitoring configuration, then compare advertised breaks with observed break and tracking data.
- No CloudWatch metrics or reports in S3: Check that the integration is enabled and configured, the host has the necessary role or credentials and permissions, the AWS region and destination are correct, and the configured retention or storage path is as expected.
- Canary is green but viewers report failure: Treat this as a playback-path issue until tested otherwise. Use player-side or synthetic checks for the relevant CDN routes, renditions, devices, and applications; manifest inspection alone cannot establish successful playback.
Or let it run in the cloud
The canary is for inspecting HLS and DASH endpoints; if your separate goal is keeping a prerecorded YouTube channel live 24/7, StreamNeo is a different tool for that job. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is YouTube-only and plays uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
