Use the overlay supplied by your graphics-card maker first: NVIDIA App for supported GeForce cards, AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition for Radeon, or Intel Arc Control for Arc. Turn on the performance or telemetry overlay, select GPU temperature, GPU clock speed, and GPU utilization, then test it in a representative game session. If the vendor overlay lacks a metric or does not appear in your game, use a cross-vendor tool such as MSI Afterburner or NVIDIA FrameView.

Choose the right overlay for your GPU

Vendor software normally has the best compatibility with its own driver and hardware. It also avoids installing a second monitoring utility when the three readings you need are already available. Your exact metric list can vary with GPU model, driver, software release, laptop configuration, and game display mode.

GPU family First choice What the documentation confirms Important qualification
GeForce GTX 600 series and newer, including GeForce RTX desktop and laptop GPUs NVIDIA App in-game performance overlay Performance metrics include frame rate, clock speeds, GPU temperatures and more. The current support page does not specify one fixed sequence of menu labels, so use the labels shown in your installed NVIDIA App.
Compatible Radeon graphics AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition Selectable statistics include GPU utilization, GPU clock, current GPU temperature, junction temperature, fan speed, memory use and clock, and frame-rate metrics. Overlay display and logging are supported. The feature requires compatible Radeon hardware and the full Adrenalin installation; not every configuration exposes every statistic.
Intel Arc graphics Intel Arc Control Arc Control provides a selectable telemetry overlay. Pressing Alt+i opens Arc Control. The cited Intel instructions do not enumerate a universal metric list for every Arc model or software release. Check the list in your installation.
Mixed or non-vendor hardware MSI Afterburner or NVIDIA FrameView Afterburner documents GPU usage, core clock, temperature, power, memory use and memory clock. FrameView documents CPU and GPU clock, utilization and temperature on supported single-GPU GeForce, AMD and Intel systems. Third-party overlays add another utility to configure, and features can differ by release.

What the three readings tell you

GPU temperature

GPU temperature is the temperature sensor value reported by the card. It is useful for spotting a rising trend, inadequate airflow, or a cooling problem, but a single number is not a universal pass-or-fail test. The acceptable operating range depends on the exact GPU, firmware, cooling design, ambient temperature, workload and the limits documented for that model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

GPU clock speed

Clock speed shows the frequency at which the GPU core is operating at that moment. Modern cards change frequency continually in response to workload, power, temperature and voltage. A reading that moves up and down during a game is therefore normal. Compare clock behavior with utilization and temperature rather than treating one instantaneous value as a target.

GPU utilization

Utilization indicates how busy the GPU engine is. High utilization with an active clock generally means the GPU is doing most of the rendering work. Low utilization can be normal in menus, frame-rate-limited games or scenes waiting on the CPU, storage or another bottleneck. It is most useful when viewed alongside frame rate, clock and temperature.

Current versus junction temperature

Radeon software can expose both current GPU temperature and GPU junction temperature. They are different sensors and can legitimately show different values. Record which one you are using when comparing sessions; do not substitute a junction reading for a model’s published core-temperature limit or vice versa.

Set up the NVIDIA App overlay

NVIDIA’s support documentation describes an in-game performance overlay for desktop and laptop GeForce RTX and GeForce GTX 600 Series-and-newer users. It includes clock speeds and GPU temperatures, along with other performance information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Install or open the NVIDIA App that manages your GeForce driver and features.
  2. Open the app’s in-game overlay while a supported game is running. The shortcut and overlay controls shown by your current release take precedence over older screenshots or instructions.
  3. Open the performance statistics or metrics controls in that overlay and enable the display.
  4. Select the available GPU temperature, GPU clock-speed and GPU-utilization entries. NVIDIA confirms temperature and clock metrics; if utilization is not offered in your build, use the metric list presented by the app or switch to a documented cross-vendor tool.
  5. Start a representative game section rather than judging the overlay in a static menu. Check that the numbers update as the scene changes.

If the overlay does not appear, first confirm that the in-game overlay feature itself is enabled, then verify the assigned shortcut and the game’s display mode. NVIDIA’s support page establishes support for the listed GeForce generations, but it does not promise that every game, anti-cheat configuration or capture setup will display the overlay identically.

Set up AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition

AMD’s article Monitor Performance Metrics with AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition (Article DH3-038, updated November 12, 2024) provides the most detailed telemetry controls in the supplied documentation. The software can show real-time statistics in an on-screen overlay and can log them to a file.

  1. Install the full version of AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition for a compatible Radeon GPU. A minimal driver installation may not expose the complete metrics feature.
  2. Open Adrenalin’s performance-metrics and overlay controls and review the selectable statistics.
  3. Enable GPU utilization, GPU clock speed and GPU current temperature. Add GPU junction temperature if you want both sensor readings. You can also select fan speed, memory use, memory clock and frame-rate metrics when those are useful to your diagnosis.
  4. Launch the game and use the default overlay shortcut, Ctrl+Shift+O, to toggle the on-screen display. If your installation uses a different assignment, change or verify it in the hotkey settings.
  5. Play a repeatable section for several minutes. Watch whether temperature rises while utilization and clock remain active, and note any frame-rate change at the same time.

Record a trend with AMD logging

For a problem that develops over time, use AMD’s logging shortcut, Ctrl+Shift+L, rather than relying on a screenshot. The logging sample interval is adjustable from 0.25 to 5 seconds. Choose a shorter interval when you need to catch brief changes, or a longer interval for a multi-minute session and a smaller log. Hotkeys are configurable, so confirm the assignments in your installed software before testing.

Logging is especially useful for separating a brief spike from a sustained condition. Keep the game scene, graphics settings, frame-rate cap and ambient conditions as consistent as practical so that two logs are comparable.

Set up Intel Arc Control

Intel’s instructions use Arc Control’s telemetry overlay. Press Alt+i to open Arc Control, enable the telemetry overlay, and select the metrics offered by your installed version.

  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
  1. Start the game or remain at the desktop if you are configuring the utility first.
  2. Press Alt+i to open Arc Control.
  3. Turn on the telemetry or performance-metrics overlay.
  4. Review the selectable metric list and choose temperature, clock and utilization if all three are present.
  5. Return to the game and confirm that the values update during rendering.

The Intel support text used for this guide confirms the overlay and metric-selection process but does not list one guaranteed set of readings for every Arc model or software version. If one of the three values is absent, treat that as a capability or version question and check the list in your installation rather than assuming the sensor is faulty.

Use MSI Afterburner when you need a cross-vendor OSD

MSI Afterburner is a third-party option when you use more than one GPU brand, want a highly configurable on-screen display, or need metrics not exposed by your vendor utility. MSI’s monitoring guide describes selecting readings in Settings > Monitoring and then enabling each desired item for the OSD.

  1. Install Afterburner from the MSI site or the download location identified in MSI’s guide. Avoid unofficial repackaged installers.
  2. Open Afterburner and choose Settings, then the Monitoring tab.
  3. In the hardware-monitoring graph list, select GPU usage, GPU core clock and GPU temperature. The same list can include power, memory use and memory clock.
  4. For each item you want on screen, enable the option that shows it in the on-screen display.
  5. Apply the settings, start the game and verify that the OSD updates. Arrange the order and appearance in the OSD controls if your release provides those options.

Afterburner can also change clocks, voltage and fan behavior, but none of those tuning features is required to read telemetry. Leave tuning controls at their current values while diagnosing a monitoring or performance problem; changing several variables at once makes the readings harder to interpret.

Use NVIDIA FrameView for measurements and capture

NVIDIA FrameView is a performance-capture utility rather than only a temperature widget. The FrameView 1.7 User Guide documents an overlay and capture/reporting of CPU and GPU clock, utilization and temperature for supported single-GPU GeForce, AMD and Intel configurations. The guides also describe additional measures such as frame-rate percentiles, latency and power, although exact availability and setup can vary by release.

  1. Install the current FrameView release and read the guide that ships with that release; do not assume that instructions for version 1.7 use unchanged labels in a newer build.
  2. Enable the overlay and choose the GPU telemetry entries you need.
  3. Run the same game scene or benchmark-style route for each comparison.
  4. Capture the session when you need a report or a time-based comparison, then inspect the recorded results together with the overlay readings.

FrameView is most useful when you need repeatable performance data across GeForce, Radeon and Arc systems. For a quick one-off temperature check on a single-brand PC, the matching vendor overlay is usually simpler.

Read temperature, utilization and clock together

Telemetry becomes actionable when the three readings are interpreted as a pattern. The following combinations are starting points for investigation, not universal diagnoses or thermal limits.

Temperature Utilization Clock behavior What to investigate
Rising steadily High for most of the scene Active or gradually reduced Check case airflow, fan operation, dust, ambient temperature and the model’s documented thermal behavior. A sustained trend matters more than one peak.
High or rising Low Low or intermittent Check whether another process, a frame-rate cap, a menu, or a CPU/engine bottleneck is limiting rendering. Also verify that the temperature sensor is the one you intend to monitor.
Stable High Stable under load This is generally a consistent workload pattern. Compare frame rate and clock with the same game scene rather than chasing a particular number.
Sudden drop Drop at the same time Clock falls sharply Look for a scene transition, frame limiter, power-management change, driver event or thermal/power response. Use a log if the event is too brief to observe.
Normal-looking Unexpectedly low Below the level seen in the same scene Check that the game is using the intended GPU, that a frame-rate cap or vertical synchronization is not limiting work, and that the display mode supports the overlay.

These patterns do not replace the limits published for your exact card. A laptop GPU, a compact desktop card and a large desktop card can report different normal values under the same game workload.

Log enough data to answer a real question

Decide what you are trying to establish before collecting data. A screenshot can show the state at one instant; a log can show whether the state persists, when it begins and what changes at the same time.

  • Checking a hot-session complaint: start logging before entering the area where the issue occurs and continue until the session ends.
  • Comparing two graphics settings: use the same route, resolution, frame-rate cap and session length, and keep the logging interval unchanged.
  • Checking a stutter: use a short interval where supported, then compare the time of the stutter with clock, utilization, temperature and frame-rate data.
  • Comparing days or rooms: record ambient conditions and note whether the case, laptop stand or fan profile changed.

AMD explicitly supports a 0.25-to-5-second logging interval. FrameView supports capture and reporting, but its exact current recording controls should be confirmed in the guide for the installed release.

Troubleshoot an overlay that does not work

The hotkey does nothing

  1. Confirm that the overlay or telemetry feature is enabled in the vendor utility.
  2. Check the assigned shortcut. AMD’s defaults are Ctrl+Shift+O for the overlay and Ctrl+Shift+L for logging; both can be changed. Intel Arc Control uses Alt+i to open its control panel.
  3. Test the shortcut after the game has focus and then at the desktop. If another application owns the same shortcut, assign a different combination in the utility.
  4. Restart the game after changing overlay settings, because some titles initialize their display hooks only at launch.

One of the three metrics is missing

Open the metric-selection list rather than assuming that every card exposes every sensor. AMD’s documented list is broad but still depends on compatible hardware and a full installation. Intel’s documented Arc Control summary does not guarantee a particular set of metrics. NVIDIA’s page confirms temperature and clock metrics but the exact list can vary by app release. If the vendor tool cannot provide the missing value, use a documented third-party option and verify that it supports your GPU configuration.

The overlay is invisible in one game

Check whether the title is running in a display mode supported by the utility and whether the overlay is enabled for that game. Try another supported mode and restart the title after changing the setting. There is no universal fix for every game, anti-cheat system, capture program or release, so avoid treating one successful game as proof that all games will work.

The overlay appears on the desktop but not in the game

Verify that the game is using the intended GPU, that the utility is running with the required permissions, and that another overlay is not interfering. Test with only one monitoring overlay active. If the vendor overlay remains unavailable, FrameView or Afterburner may provide a different compatibility path, but each adds its own configuration and support limits.

The readings look implausible

Check the sensor name, units and update interval. Make sure you are not comparing current temperature with junction temperature, GPU core clock with memory clock, or a menu reading with a sustained gameplay reading. Reproduce the measurement in a consistent scene and compare it with the GPU model’s documentation.

Monitor first; tune only when you have a separate reason

Viewing telemetry does not require overclocking, undervolting or a custom fan curve. Those changes can alter temperature and clock behavior and make a diagnosis less reliable. Establish a baseline with the card at its normal settings, then change one setting at a time only if you have a specific tuning goal and a way to recover.

Do not infer imminent hardware failure from one reading. Investigate persistent symptoms—repeated clock drops, crashes, visual corruption, fan failure or an abnormal temperature trend—using the exact GPU model’s operating limits and the log from a representative session.

A short setup checklist

  • Identify whether the system uses GeForce, Radeon or Intel Arc graphics.
  • Install the full matching vendor utility and update it through a trusted source.
  • Enable the in-game performance or telemetry overlay.
  • Select GPU temperature, GPU clock speed and GPU utilization where the installed version offers them.
  • Confirm the shortcut: NVIDIA’s current app controls, AMD’s configurable defaults of Ctrl+Shift+O, or Intel’s Alt+i for Arc Control.
  • Test in a real game scene and watch all three readings together.
  • Log the session when a trend, intermittent event or comparison matters.
  • Use Afterburner or FrameView only when their broader coverage or cross-vendor support solves a problem the vendor overlay does not.
