To monitor your site’s Google Search performance, open the Search results Performance report in Google Search Console. Review clicks, impressions, click-through rate (CTR) and average position together, then use the Queries, Pages, Countries, Devices, Search appearance and Dates tabs to find where changes are coming from.
Open the Search results Performance report
- Sign in to Google Search Console and select the property for the site you want to review.
- Open Performance and select Search results. The report opens with a three-month date range by default; you can change the range and the metrics displayed. Google describes it as a report of important metrics about how a site performs in Search results. Google Search Console Help: Performance report overview.
- Choose the search type that matches your question: Web, Image, Video or News. Web includes text and multimodal search traffic under Google’s current documentation.
For a quick orientation, Search Console may also show an Insights report with summaries of clicks, impressions, content, queries and countries. Its cards can lead to a filtered Performance report, but the report is being introduced gradually and may not be available to every user. Google Search Console Help: Insights report.

Read the four headline metrics together
| Metric | What it tells you | How to interpret it |

| Clicks | Times people clicked your site’s result from Google Search. | These are visits from Search results, not all visits to your site. |
| Impressions | How often your site appeared in Search results, subject to the counting rules for that result type. | An impression measures visibility, not a click or a unique person. |

Google’s definitions and counting details are in What are impressions, position, and clicks? Search results can differ by time, place, device and a person’s recent search history, so a manual Google search may not reproduce the result represented by a report average.
Choose a breakdown that answers your question
After checking the chart, use the table tabs to identify which searches, pages or contexts explain the overall movement. Each grouping answers a different question:

- Queries: Which searches showed your site? Query data is subject to privacy limits, so the visible list is not a complete record of every search.
- Pages: Which landing URLs received visibility or clicks? Use this when assessing individual pages rather than search wording.
- Countries: Does performance differ by geography?
- Devices: Does the pattern change across device categories?
- Search appearance: Is a particular Search result appearance associated with a change?
- Dates: When did the change happen, and does it persist across days or broader periods?
Chart totals and table totals may not match. Query, country, device and date data are aggregated at the property level; page and search-appearance data are aggregated at the page level. A different grouping can therefore produce a different total. See Google’s Performance report documentation for the report’s aggregation details.
Compare periods or segments consistently
Use the date comparison control to compare two periods, or compare segments such as countries. A fair comparison keeps the search type, filters and other selected settings consistent. When the question is “what changed?”, match comparable date ranges where possible rather than comparing periods with different lengths or settings.

Choose the time scale that suits the decision. The 24-hour view provides hourly data, while daily data is useful for shorter-term changes. Weekly or monthly aggregation can make weekday and holiday fluctuations less prominent. The newest data can still be preliminary and may change as Google collects it; in the chart, Google marks preliminary data with a dotted line, and the 24-hour view includes preliminary data.

Turn a change into a useful investigation
When impressions rise or fall
Check Queries and Pages to see whether the change is concentrated in particular searches or URLs. Then inspect country, device and search appearance for differences in context. Impressions describe appearances under Google’s counting rules, so they are best treated as a visibility signal rather than proof that a specific audience saw a result.

When clicks or CTR change
Look for high-impression queries or pages with comparatively low CTR, then review whether the result’s title and snippet accurately answer the search. Consider country and device differences before changing a page or its presentation. CTR is a ratio, not a promise that every searcher should click, and Search Console does not provide a universal target percentage.
When average position moves
Check the underlying queries and pages, and compare the same search type and period settings. The average summarizes the topmost result across the report’s data; it cannot tell you the exact position a particular person will see in a manual search.

The report offers export options for chart and table data. If you analyze an export, note that values shown in the interface as unavailable or not-a-number may appear as zero in exported data. That transformation can affect calculations, so account for it when it matters to your analysis. Google documents export behavior in the Performance report overview.
