Use FFmpeg’s machine-readable -progress output as a heartbeat, and treat a missing update as a possible stall—not proof that YouTube’s ingest or viewer-facing playback is healthy. A reliable watchdog also checks whether FFmpeg exited, preserves its error output, and verifies stream status separately in YouTube Live Control Room.
What a watchdog can—and cannot—tell you
There are several distinct signals to monitor. Do not collapse them into a single “stream healthy” result:

YouTube advises monitoring stream health and reviewing messages during an event. Its live-stream metrics guidance describes status and real-time metrics, while its live-streaming tips call for continuous audio and video quality monitoring.

How FFmpeg reports progress
FFmpeg’s -progress option writes machine-readable key=value lines periodically and at the end of encoding. Each complete update ends with a progress key whose value is continue or end. The reporting interval is controlled by -stats_period; the FFmpeg documentation gives a default of 0.5 seconds. See the FFmpeg CLI documentation for the current option details; your installed FFmpeg build may differ from the newest documentation.

Use a dedicated progress channel instead of parsing the human-readable status text. In the example below, stdout carries progress records and stderr remains available for diagnostics. The one-second period is an illustrative choice, not an FFmpeg or YouTube requirement.
ffmpeg -nostdin -i INPUT_OPTIONS -progress pipe:1 -stats_period 1 OUTPUT_OPTIONSReplace INPUT_OPTIONS and OUTPUT_OPTIONS with the actual input and output arguments for your stream. For YouTube, obtain the ingest URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. Prefer RTMPS where available; YouTube describes it as RTMP over TLS/SSL in its RTMPS instructions. Keep the key out of scripts that are publicly visible and out of logs.

Build the watchdog around complete updates
The core logic is independent of language: read progress output, assemble records, and refresh a heartbeat only after a full record arrives. The final progress=end record means encoding ended; it is not automatically a failure.

- Start FFmpeg with a separate progress channel. Use
-progress pipe:1and an explicit-stats_period; use-nostdinfor unattended operation so FFmpeg does not wait for interactive input. Capture stderr separately. - Buffer key/value lines into one update. Do not reset the heartbeat for every line. Wait until the
progressterminator arrives, then record the current time as the last complete update. - Track process liveness separately. Retain the child PID and collect its exit status. A dead FFmpeg process is a different condition from a live process whose progress feed has stopped.
- Choose a stale-update threshold for your setup. FFmpeg does not prescribe a watchdog timeout. Allow for expected source irregularity, network interruptions, and host load; the threshold should be longer than ordinary gaps in complete updates.
- Decide what to do when progress goes stale. Alert first if an interruption is costly, then apply a bounded retry policy or increasing backoff. Unbounded immediate restarts can create a crash loop.
- Record timestamps and preserve stderr. Save enough context to diagnose a failure after restart instead of losing the useful messages when the old process exits.
- Verify YouTube ingest independently. Check stream status and health in Live Control Room, then inspect playback where possible. A moving FFmpeg heartbeat is not proof YouTube accepted the feed.
This describes the watchdog’s behavior, not a tested, drop-in production script. The right implementation depends on the operating system and service manager. A deployment must also handle child-process cleanup, termination signals, pipeline exit semantics, secret protection, logging, and retry limits. Test those paths before relying on unattended operation.

How do I know if FFmpeg is still streaming to YouTube?
Check the signals in order: a recent complete FFmpeg progress record shows that FFmpeg is reporting activity; the process state and exit code show whether it is still running; Live Control Room shows what YouTube is receiving; and a playback check helps assess the viewer-facing result. No single one of these checks answers all four questions.
For encoder configuration, follow YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually use. YouTube documents H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, frame rates up to 60 fps, a recommended two-second keyframe interval, and a maximum interval of four seconds. Bitrate guidance depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use its applicable table rather than a generic value.

How can I restart FFmpeg if the stream stalls?
Have a supervisor—not the progress parser alone—decide whether to restart. Restart only after distinguishing a stale progress feed from a process exit, apply bounded retries or backoff, and retain the old process’s exit status and stderr. After a restart, check Live Control Room for ingest status rather than assuming that a new FFmpeg process restored the YouTube stream.
If continuity matters, test your recovery plan before an event. YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend testing a backup encoder by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet, then checking whether the player rolls over to the backup.
