To catch a cron job that is missing, failing, or stuck, give it an external monitor with an expected schedule. Have the job report when it starts and when it finishes; if completion never arrives within a chosen grace period, the monitor can alert a channel your team watches. A success-only heartbeat is a simpler alternative, but it gives less information about what happened during a run.
Choose what the monitor should detect
A cron alert can answer several different questions: Did the job run when expected? Did it finish successfully? Did it take too long? Configure the check around the failure that matters, rather than treating any received ping as proof that the task is healthy.

- Missed run: No expected signal arrives for the scheduled execution.
- Failed run: The task exits unsuccessfully, and the monitor receives a failure signal or exit status.
- Hung or overlong run: The job starts but does not report completion within its allowed window, or its runtime exceeds a configured threshold.
A monitor needs an expected schedule to identify a missed run. A heartbeat that is not evaluated against when the job should run cannot reliably tell you that an execution was skipped. Healthchecks.io describes the basic setup as creating a unique ping URL, adding an HTTP request to the job, and alerting when the expected ping does not arrive: Healthchecks.io documentation.
Set up a separate check for each important job
Match the schedule and timezone
Create a distinct check for each important job so an alert identifies which task needs attention. Configure the check with the actual cron expression and the server’s timezone. Cron usually follows local system time; if the monitor uses a different timezone, expected runs may appear late or missing. Healthchecks.io explains its schedule and grace settings in its check configuration guide.

Set grace time to allow ordinary delays without masking a meaningful failure. There is no universal grace value: choose one based on the job’s schedule, normal start-time variation, and the consequences of a late run. A job expected once daily may need a different tolerance from one that runs every few minutes.
Send signals at the right points in the run
For a simple check, send a success ping only after the useful work has completed. Sending it at the beginning can make a job that later hangs look healthy. For clearer diagnosis, report lifecycle events: start, successful completion, and failure, with an exit status or useful error context when the integration supports it. Healthchecks.io documents start and success signals for limiting a run’s completion window, and shows a systemd service approach that reports the task’s resulting exit status: Healthchecks.io documentation and systemd integration guide.

Detect hangs and abnormal runtimes
A success-only heartbeat can reveal that a run did not finish, but lifecycle signals make the reason easier to narrow down. A start signal followed by no completion within the allowed window points to a task that may be stuck or taking unusually long. A failure signal or exit status distinguishes an unsuccessful exit from a missing completion signal.

Route alerts somewhere people monitor
Choose a destination with a clear owner: for example, a team inbox, chat channel, incident-management system, SMS recipient, or webhook. Cronitor lists integrations including email, Slack, Microsoft Teams, SMS, PagerDuty, and webhooks; Healthchecks.io also documents notification integrations. The channels available to a particular account may change or depend on its plan, so confirm support before designing an alert workflow around one. See Cronitor notifications and Healthchecks.io documentation.
Test the alert path before relying on it. In a safe test check, allow an expected signal to be missed or send a failure signal, then confirm that the notification reaches the intended destination. Restore the normal successful path afterward. Also account for the possibility that the job cannot reach the monitoring endpoint or that the endpoint cannot reach your notification channel; a monitor cannot deliver an alert through a broken route.

Choose a monitoring approach
| Need | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Basic missing-run alert | A unique heartbeat endpoint checked against the job’s expected schedule. Healthchecks.io documents this pattern at its documentation. |
| Schedule-aware checks | Support for cron expressions, intervals, or time-of-day schedules, plus timezone and lateness settings. Healthchecks.io describes schedule and grace configuration at its check configuration guide; Cronitor documents scheduling options at its cron job monitoring documentation. |
| Run-level diagnosis | Start, success, and failure events, with exit status or other context where supported. Healthchecks.io’s systemd guide illustrates reporting a task’s exit status. |
| Runtime and tolerance controls | Grace periods, failure or schedule tolerance, and minimum- or maximum-duration assertions. Cronitor describes these controls at its cron job monitoring documentation. |
| Deployment and operating model | Compare the integrations, run history, setup method, and deployment options you need. Healthchecks.io’s own product comparison describes its capabilities relative to Cronitor; treat it as a vendor-authored comparison, not an independent evaluation: Healthchecks.io documentation. |
A lightweight heartbeat is often enough for a straightforward scheduled command. Choose a richer job monitor when operators need more execution detail, duration checks, or specific integrations. These are feature-based distinctions, not a universal ranking of products.
