On Linux, temperature monitoring depends on the sensors the kernel and device expose. In all cases, confirm that you are looking at a CPU sensor—not a generic board or drive reading—and compare it with guidance for your exact processor and mini PC.
What CPU monitoring can tell you
A monitoring utility displays readings from sensors exposed by the processor, motherboard, firmware, drivers and operating system. The labels and availability vary by hardware. If a CPU temperature is missing or implausible, that can indicate unsupported or unavailable sensor reporting; it does not, by itself, prove that the mini PC is overheating.

A single snapshot cannot show whether the temperature remains elevated during continuous use. Prefer a history graph when the utility offers one, and observe it during representative stream operation. A temperature reading alone also cannot establish that the stream is failing or identify the cause of a problem.
Choose a utility for your operating system
Windows
- CPUID HWMonitor: CPUID describes HWMonitor as a Windows utility for x86/x64 and ARM64 systems that reads health sensors including CPU and GPU temperatures, fan speeds, utilization and clock speeds. Its official product page is HWMonitor. The page also advertises a PRO version; it does not establish that a paid version is required for basic temperature viewing.
- NZXT CAM: NZXT says CAM monitors Windows PCs and provides CPU, GPU, memory and storage readings, temperature graphs, utilization and a compact mini mode. Its FAQ lists Windows 10 and 11 support and says it can monitor without NZXT hardware; advanced NZXT fan control requires compatible NZXT hardware. See NZXT CAM.
- Open Hardware Monitor: The project describes its software as free and open-source sensor monitoring for Intel and AMD processors and other hardware. Its repository notes that antivirus vendors have sometimes flagged the project. Download only from the project’s official source and do not disable security protections or create broad antivirus exclusions to make a utility run. See Open Hardware Monitor.
Linux
On Linux, available CPU readings depend on the processor, kernel support and drivers, as well as what the mini PC exposes. The NIX-Z documentation describes Intel CPU temperatures through coretemp and AMD temperatures through k10temp, using the hwmon subsystem. These are useful terms when checking support, not a promise that every system will expose the same sensor or label. See NIX-Z documentation.

Identify your CPU model and Linux distribution, then check whether temperature sensors are exposed for that hardware. You can use a graphical monitor or a command-line sensor reader if supported. If a CPU reading is absent, check the CPU and mini-PC documentation and the relevant driver support before concluding that the computer is too hot.
Check the temperature during the stream
- Identify the hardware and software. Note the mini PC model, CPU model and operating system. You will need these to interpret sensor labels and find the applicable manufacturer guidance.
- Open a sensor monitor. On Windows, start with HWMonitor or CAM. On Linux, use a utility that reads the sensors exposed by the system.
- Select the CPU reading. Choose a CPU package or core temperature when available. Do not mistake a motherboard, system or drive temperature for a processor reading.
- Check that it behaves plausibly. Compare the display at idle with its reading during normal stream operation. If the utility provides a graph or history, review a representative period rather than relying on one moment. CAM advertises temperature graphs; Nexus also advertises graph/history features in its monitoring documentation.
- Record symptoms alongside readings. Note fan noise, thermal throttling, dropped frames or unexpected shutdowns if they occur. These signs are useful context, but temperature alone does not prove a stream problem or its cause.
- Look up the exact limits. Compare your observations with documentation for the specific processor and mini PC. There is no single safe CPU temperature that can be applied to every model, and no model-specific maximum or target is established here.
What to do if the reading is missing or concerning
- No CPU temperature appears: Confirm that the selected utility supports your operating system and check the CPU model, driver and mini-PC vendor documentation. Sensor reporting differs by hardware; absence of a reading is not proof of overheating.
- The displayed value seems implausible: Check whether the label refers to the CPU, board or another component, and compare it in a second supported utility if available. The available vendor descriptions do not establish an independent accuracy comparison.
- The temperature stays high or symptoms accompany it: Record the CPU reading and symptoms over time, then consult the processor and mini-PC manufacturer guidance for that exact model. The mini PC model, CPU and ambient conditions matter; without them, a universal threshold or cooling fix would be misleading.
- You are considering a stand or fan: Treat that as a separate cooling decision, not a monitoring requirement. A temperature utility tells you what its sensors report; the reading alone does not establish that this particular PC needs a cooling accessory or repair.
