How to Monitor CPU and Network Usage for an OVHcloud YouTube Stream

Monitor the machine running the encoder, then check OBS and YouTube for stream-specific symptoms. OVHcloud provider monitoring can tell you whether a host is reachable; it does not tell you whether OBS has enough CPU or whether the encoder’s connection can sustain the configured bitrate. The right OVHcloud dashboard depends on whether you use Web Hosting, a VPS, or a Dedicated Server, and on where OBS runs.

First identify where the encoder runs

CPU encoding load occurs on the device running the encoder. If OBS runs on an OVHcloud instance, monitor that instance. If OBS runs on your local computer and OVHcloud hosts a separate part of your setup, monitor each system for its own role: the local computer for encoding, and the OVHcloud service for the work it actually performs.

Also identify the OVHcloud product. OVHcloud’s documented Web Hosting graphs are specific to Web Hosting; they should not be assumed to exist for VPS or Dedicated Servers. The dedicated-server monitoring guidance addresses host reachability and provider intervention, not OBS performance.

What each monitoring layer tells you

Layer Useful for What it does not establish
OVHcloud service or provider monitoring Whether a service or host is responding, and whether product-specific resource graphs are available. Whether OBS is overloaded or whether the encoder-to-YouTube connection can sustain the stream bitrate. Dedicated-server monitoring is reachability-focused; Web Hosting graphs apply to that product. OVHcloud dedicated-server monitoring · OVHcloud Web Hosting statistics
Encoder and platform diagnostics Whether the encoder is coping and whether the stream is reaching YouTube at the configured bitrate. OBS and YouTube diagnostics do not, by themselves, identify which network operator is responsible for a connection problem. YouTube encoder settings · OBS stream connection troubleshooting

Set a useful baseline before going live

  1. Match the test to the intended broadcast. Use the expected resolution, frame rate, scene complexity, audio, and representative motion. YouTube recommends testing with a speed test and a representative stream before going live. A test using a static screen may not reveal the same load as a busy scene.
  2. Note the encoder configuration. Record the selected encoder, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. Compare the configured bitrate with sustained upload capacity rather than relying on a brief peak speed-test result.
  3. Observe the encoder machine. Watch CPU use and network activity on the actual device sending the stream. Record what happens while the representative test is running so you can compare it with later symptoms.
  4. Avoid universal thresholds. There is no single CPU limit or upload-headroom percentage that applies to every codec, preset, workload, and connection. Treat the baseline as specific to your configuration.

Check the YouTube stream settings that affect network use

YouTube’s published encoder-settings guidance specifies RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), a recommended two-second keyframe frequency that should not exceed four seconds, and frame rates up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends RTMPS to encrypt the stream in transit to and through Google’s servers. Requirements and interface labels can change, so consult the current YouTube encoder-settings page when configuring a stream.

Some values from YouTube’s bitrate table illustrate why resolution and codec matter. These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees about any individual upload path:

Resolution and frame rate Codec YouTube minimum bitrate YouTube recommended bitrate
720p at 30 fps H.264 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p at 30 fps AV1 or H.265 2 Mbps 6 Mbps
480p at 30 fps H.264 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps
360p at 30 fps H.264 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps

Use the row matching your configuration, not a value for a different resolution or codec. A published recommendation does not prove that your server or local connection can sustain it under real conditions.

Monitor OBS and YouTube during the stream

  1. In YouTube Live Control Room, check stream health and review messages while the event is live. YouTube specifically advises monitoring both during the event.
  2. In OBS, open the Statistics view and watch dropped frames and other relevant counters. OBS distinguishes network-dropped frames from encoding or rendering problems; do not treat every dropped-frame symptom as CPU overload.
  3. Compare symptoms over time. Note whether CPU load, encoding or renderer lag, network-dropped frames, or YouTube health messages change together. A trend during the event is more informative than an isolated reading.

OBS says that an increasing “Dropped frames” counter alongside a yellow or red connection indicator means the connection to the ingest server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. Its troubleshooting guidance describes dropped frames or intermittent disconnections as a network issue between the computer and the remote ingest server. That identifies the affected path; it does not prove OVHcloud itself is at fault.

Use the OVHcloud panel that matches your service

OVHcloud Web Hosting

For Web Hosting plans, OVHcloud documents infrastructure statistics in the service’s Statistics and logs tab in the Control Panel. The documented graphs include CPU usage, outgoing connections, resource-limit events, and other metrics. These are Web Hosting instructions; do not assume the same panel or graphs apply to a VPS or Dedicated Server. See OVHcloud’s Web Hosting statistics guidance.

OVHcloud VPS or Dedicated Server

The available product guidance does not establish a universal set of VPS or Dedicated Server dashboard steps, operating-system commands, or metric names. Check the documentation and monitoring options for your specific service and operating system. For Dedicated Servers, OVHcloud’s monitoring article concerns machine response and possible provider intervention; use operating-system or instance-level telemetry to assess workload CPU and network activity, and OBS/YouTube diagnostics to assess the stream.

Diagnose by symptom

  • High CPU or encoding/renderer lag: Investigate encoder settings, scene workload, and whether hardware encoding is available on the encoder machine. The guidance cited here does not establish a universal CPU threshold or a verified hardware recommendation.
  • OBS network-dropped frames: Compare the configured bitrate with sustained upload capacity and investigate connection stability to the ingest server. Check YouTube stream health and OBS’s connection indicator; a network-dropped-frame report alone does not identify the responsible network provider.
  • Host unreachable or provider availability alert: Treat this as a host or reachability incident. Consult status and monitoring details for your specific OVHcloud service rather than interpreting it as an encoder diagnosis.
  • Web Hosting resource-limit event: Review the product-specific statistics and logs, including resource-limit information. Do not apply Web Hosting controls to a VPS or Dedicated Server unless its own documentation says they are available.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded video playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream rather than diagnose an OBS-based setup, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
