For a quick check, request SRS’s built-in HTTP API endpoint /api/v1/summaries. For ongoing history, dashboards, and alerts, use the SRS Prometheus exporter with Prometheus; add node_exporter to see whole-host resource use. Exact endpoints and exporter settings vary by SRS release, so confirm them against your installed version.

Check SRS CPU and memory usage now

SRS exposes system and stream status through an HTTP API. The SRS v6 introduction describes it as an interface for querying system and stream status (SRS v6 introduction). For a first inspection, query the summaries endpoint from the server or another trusted machine that can reach its API listener:

curl http://127.0.0.1:1985/api/v1/summaries

The SRS v5 documentation demonstrates the summaries route on port 1985 (SRS v5 HTTP API). Replace 127.0.0.1 with an appropriate host only if your deployment requires remote access. The API listener must be enabled and reachable; the command will fail if it is not. Do not expose the API port directly to the public internet: the documentation does not define a universally safe public access configuration.

The response includes a summary of SRS process and system information, including CPU and memory fields as supported by the release and configuration. For targeted details, the SRS API reference also lists /api/v1/rusages, /api/v1/self_proc_stats, /api/v1/system_proc_stats, and /api/v1/meminfos (SRS v4 HTTP API reference). Use those routes only after checking that your installed version supports them.

Choose the right monitoring method

Method Best for Pair it with Important caveat
SRS HTTP API summaries Immediate inspection or a small custom integration More specific API endpoints when available Available fields depend on SRS version and system-statistics configuration (SRS v5 HTTP API; SRS v4 HTTP API reference).
SRS Prometheus exporter Retained SRS metrics, dashboards, and alerting Prometheus; Grafana as a visualization layer The documented exporter usage applies to SRS 5.0.86 or later; check the installed release and its configuration (SRS Prometheus exporter guide).
Host exporter alongside SRS Whole-machine context such as host resource use node_exporter scraped separately by Prometheus It complements SRS metrics rather than replacing them (SRS Prometheus exporter guide).

Set up ongoing monitoring with Prometheus

1. Confirm the SRS exporter is supported and enabled

The SRS exporter guide says its described usage requires SRS 5.0.86 or later. In that guide, the exporter is disabled by default and its documented default listener is port 9972. Environment variables are used to enable and configure it. Follow the instructions for the exact release you run rather than assuming these defaults apply to every version (SRS Prometheus exporter guide).

2. Scrape SRS and the host as separate targets

Prometheus periodically fetches metrics from configured targets and stores them as time series. The SRS example configuration defines separate srs and node jobs, scraping the SRS exporter and node_exporter independently. It uses a five-second scrape interval as an example, not as a universal recommendation; choose an interval appropriate to your monitoring needs and deployment (SRS Prometheus exporter guide).

Keep the distinction clear when reading the resulting data: SRS metrics describe the media-server process or SRS-reported system statistics, while node_exporter provides host-level context. Grafana can visualize Prometheus metrics in dashboards, as shown in the SRS guide.

3. Check networking in containers and clusters

The target address Prometheus uses must be reachable from Prometheus itself. In Docker or a cluster, verify service names, container ports, port publishing, and whether the exporter or host exporter is visible from the Prometheus network. The SRS documentation’s example does not establish one networking arrangement that fits every deployment, so adapt target addresses to your environment and avoid publishing monitoring endpoints unnecessarily.

Understand what the numbers mean

Separate process readings from host capacity

A process-focused SRS reading and a whole-machine reading answer different questions. A high host CPU figure with a lower SRS process figure can point to other workload on the machine; conversely, process metrics may identify SRS as the main consumer. Scraping both SRS and the host makes those readings easier to distinguish.

Check whether system statistics are configured

The SRS v4 API reference describes a stats configuration for retrieving system statistics, including CPU and memory, and also discusses network and disk statistics. It notes that stats.network relates to heartbeat system reporting. Do not assume every statistic is active merely because an endpoint responds; compare your configuration and API output with the documentation for your SRS release (SRS v4 HTTP API reference).

Use your own workload as the baseline

The cited SRS material does not establish a universal CPU percentage or memory limit that defines a healthy server. Record normal readings under your own stream and viewer load, then look for sustained changes and correlate them with stream quality and available host capacity. A brief spike alone is not enough to diagnose a problem.

Version and configuration cautions

  • The API examples and endpoint listings come from versioned SRS documentation. Check your installed release before relying on a route or assuming response fields match another release.
  • The exporter guide’s usage applies to SRS 5.0.86 or later. Its exporter defaults and sample scrape configuration should not be generalized to older or differently configured installations.
  • The v8 API reference labels v8 unstable, while the v6 introduction includes both a stable label and a development-status note. Treat version labels and instructions in the context of the exact release documentation you are following (SRS exporter guide; SRS v6 introduction).

Troubleshooting common monitoring problems

  • The curl request is refused or times out: verify that the HTTP API listener is enabled, that you are using the configured host and port, and that network rules permit access from the requesting machine.
  • The endpoint responds but CPU or memory fields are missing or unexpected: confirm the route and response format for your installed SRS release, then check the relevant system-statistics configuration. The v4 reference documents system-statistics settings, but those details should not be presumed identical across releases.
  • Prometheus shows the SRS target as unavailable: check that the exporter is enabled, that its listener is reachable from Prometheus, and that the target address and port match the actual deployment.
  • The exporter works on a host but not in Docker or a cluster: check container network membership, service discovery, port publishing, and host-versus-container addressing. A loopback address inside one container does not automatically identify a different container or the host.
  • SRS metrics appear but machine-wide context is missing: configure and scrape node_exporter as its own target; the SRS exporter guide’s example treats it separately.
  • A resource increase has no obvious explanation: compare time-series trends with stream activity and host load instead of treating one isolated reading as a universal failure threshold.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a continuously looping YouTube channel rather than operating a self-hosted SRS server, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the stream is sent at the quality uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, then the monthly plan is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
