You can automate competitor-ad monitoring on Meta, but the method depends on what you need to track. Start with Meta’s Ad Library for public ads; use the Ad Library API only for its documented eligible categories, not as a feed of every commercial ad worldwide. A reliable workflow records dated observations, checks for changes, and sends meaningful findings to a person for review.
What you can monitor—and what Meta’s API covers
Meta directs people looking for ads currently running across its technologies to the Ad Library website. The public Ad Library API is more limited than a universal commercial-ad feed. Meta documents API access for political or social-issue ads delivered worldwide for seven years, and ads of any type delivered to the UK or EU during the past year. Those scopes describe different categories and should not be generalized to all ads or countries.
For ads targeting people in the EU, Meta’s 2023 transparency announcement says the Ad Library includes run dates and targeting parameters, and that those ads remain publicly available for one year. This EU-specific transparency description is not evidence of equivalent targeting detail or retention in every geography. See Meta’s DSA transparency announcement.
| Route | Useful for | Boundary to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Ad Library website | Looking up public ads currently running across Meta technologies, including ordinary commercial ads that may not be in the API’s applicable scope. | It is a human-facing lookup route; it does not by itself give you a scheduled collection pipeline. |
| Ad Library API | Customized searches and programmatic collection of eligible ads and documented fields. | Use only for the documented ad categories and geography/time scope; it is not a worldwide feed of all commercial ads. |
| Third-party ad-intelligence service | Potentially convenient saved history, workflows, or alerts, depending on the service. | Coverage, retention, refresh behavior, exports, integrations, and price are vendor-specific; verify them for your target market. |
Meta describes the API as helping users perform customized searches of the Ad Library. Documented data includes ad creative content, Page identity, delivery dates, and the Meta platform where an ad appeared. Documented search dimensions include terms, media type, platform, and Page IDs. Meta says programming familiarity helps with API use. Access involves a Facebook account, identity and location confirmation for political or social-issue ad authorization, a Meta for Developers account, and an app. Consult Meta’s current API page for the actual access flow and scope before building around it.

How to track competitor Facebook and Instagram ads automatically
Build the process around repeatable observations, not the assumption that every ad can be fetched. The same workflow can cover Facebook and Instagram where the relevant ad is visible and the data source identifies its platform.
- Define the watchlist. List each competitor’s brand name, known Meta Page name or ID, relevant Ad Library URL, market, and geography. Keep similarly named Pages distinct; verify that a Page actually belongs to the brand before treating its ads as competitor activity.
- Choose a collection path per market. Use the Ad Library website for current ads outside the API’s applicable scope. Use the API only for eligible categories, and record the scope you rely on. If a third-party service is involved, confirm which Pages, geographies, platforms, and historical periods it actually covers.
- Capture dated snapshots. On a chosen schedule, save each observation with collection time, query terms, geography, Page identity, platform, delivery dates, creative, and the ad library ID when available. Keep the original observation rather than overwriting it with the latest version.
- Compare changes, not just totals. Flag a newly observed creative, a change in copy or format, a different stated offer, or a change in delivery dates. Compare like with like: the same Page, geography, query, and collection method.
- Route meaningful changes for human review. Send the creative and stated offer to a marketer or media buyer to interpret. Keep the alert concise and link it to the saved observation so a reviewer can check context.
- Log collection failures and review coverage. Record failed queries and gaps rather than treating an empty result as proof that a competitor has no ads. Recheck Meta’s documentation when your API scope or data fields matter to the workflow.
What belongs in a useful monitoring record
- Competitor label and verified Page name or ID.
- Query terms, geography, source used, and time collected.
- Ad library ID if available, creative content, media type, and platform.
- Delivery dates shown by the source.
- A change note that distinguishes new observations from confirmed changes.
- Collection status, including errors or known coverage limitations.
That context makes later comparisons interpretable. Without it, a difference may reflect a changed query or geography rather than a genuine change in the competitor’s advertising.
How to get alerts when a competitor launches a new Instagram ad
An alert is only as complete as the source behind it. Where eligible API data or a third-party service supports scheduled collection, compare each new snapshot against the previous one and alert on newly observed ad IDs or materially changed creative. For ads visible in the Ad Library website but not available through the API, a person may need to check the relevant library results and record them; do not describe that as comprehensive automatic coverage.
Use deduplication so the same ad does not trigger an alert each run. A practical alert should include the competitor/Page, platform if stated, first-observed time, delivery dates if shown, a short creative summary, and a link or stored reference to the observation. Label the time as “first observed by this workflow,” not the ad’s launch date, unless the source establishes the launch date.

Keep alerts useful rather than noisy
- Alert immediately for a genuinely new ad or a meaningful change in offer or format.
- Group repeated observations of unchanged ads into a digest.
- Separate “not returned by this query” from “confirmed no ads.”
- Provide a human review queue for uncertain Page matches or ambiguous changes.
Meta’s public data can show what is observable in the applicable source and fields; it does not establish ordinary commercial campaign return on ad spend or full spend/performance data. An ad’s apparent duration is a clue for further investigation, not proof of profitability or success.
Automate the research workflow without overstating what it proves
Monitoring is most useful as a research input. It can show visible creative choices and observed delivery information within the coverage of the source. It cannot, from those facts alone, tell you the competitor’s targeting strategy in every region, budget, conversion rate, or business outcome. Meta identifies the Content Library and API as research tools for public Facebook and Instagram content; that should not be conflated with broad access to all commercial competitor ads.
For EU-facing research, Meta’s DSA announcement specifically describes targeting parameters and a one-year public archive for ads targeting people in the EU. Keep that geography qualification attached to findings. In other markets, report only what the applicable Ad Library source or service actually exposes.
Use competitor observations to form hypotheses—such as which offer or creative angle merits testing in your own campaign—not to copy another advertiser’s creative. Retain source and collection notes so a reviewer can distinguish observation from interpretation.

When a third-party tracker may be worth evaluating
Meta’s native library and API are the reference points; a paid service may help when a team values saved history, workflow automation, or alerts. Foreplay describes Spyder as a service for automated Meta competitor ad tracking and describes its API as supporting software workflows with competitor ad data. These are Foreplay’s product descriptions, not independent verification of coverage or performance. See Foreplay Spyder help and Foreplay API.
Before choosing any vendor, ask for specifics rather than assuming its coverage matches the Ad Library:
- Which Pages, countries, and Meta platforms are included?
- How often are ads collected, and what does “new” mean in its alert logic?
- How far back does saved history go, and can you export the actual creative and metadata?
- Which fields are included, and can you retrieve an ad’s source reference?
- Are alerts, API access, or integrations included in the plan you would buy?
- What is the total recurring subscription cost for the seats and volume your team needs?
Compare the answers with a small, known watchlist and a defined evaluation period. Do not infer broad market or historical coverage from a product description alone.

An API search returns no ads
Check whether the ad category, destination geography, dates, terms, Page ID, and platform match the API’s documented scope. A zero-result response does not establish that no commercial ads are running: the ad may be outside API coverage, the query may be too narrow, or the Page identity may be wrong. Check the Ad Library website for current visible ads where appropriate.
The competitor appears to have multiple Pages
Do not merge results based on similar names alone. Verify the Page’s relationship to the brand, record the exact Page identity, and keep uncertain matches flagged for human review.
An alert repeats the same ad
Use the ad library ID when available as a deduplication key, supplemented by Page identity and creative comparison. If an ID is absent, retain the observation and mark the match as probable rather than silently treating it as certain.

History seems incomplete
Distinguish the history your own workflow has saved from the source’s public retention and coverage. A monitoring process cannot reconstruct observations it never collected, and vendor retention is a product-specific question to verify.
Creative or delivery details changed between checks
Keep timestamped snapshots and document the exact fields that changed. Treat an observed difference as a change in the available record; avoid asserting why the advertiser made it or whether it improved results without separate evidence.
Frequently asked questions
Does the Ad Library show how much a competitor earned from an ad?
No. The documented public information described here does not establish ordinary commercial campaign revenue, return on ad spend, or full performance data.
