How to Monitor Competitors’ Meta Ad Libraries

To monitor competitors’ Meta ads, choose the country whose audience you want to study, search for each competitor’s Facebook Page in Meta Ad Library, and record the ad’s creative, copy, format, platform, visible start date, and any versions. Recheck on a consistent schedule and compare changes. Treat what you see as clues about competitors’ messaging—not proof of their spend, targeting, conversions, or profitability.

Build a repeatable Meta Ad Library monitoring workflow

  1. Choose the market

Open Meta Ad Library and select the country whose audience and ad delivery you want to examine. The country filter refers to where ads are targeted, not where the advertiser is headquartered. For a competitor active in several markets, repeat the same search country by country; compare language, offers, creative, and format.

  2. Find the advertiser and discover others

Search for the competitor’s Facebook Page name and choose the matching Page from the suggestions to focus on that advertiser. Then search relevant category, product, and customer-problem keywords. Keyword searches can surface advertisers you did not already know to track.

  3. Narrow results

Use the filters available in the current interface to narrow by platform (for example, Facebook or Instagram), media type (image, video, or carousel), language, activity status, or date. When looking for patterns, compare one platform or format at a time rather than mixing unlike results. Controls and coverage can change, so rely on the options currently shown in Ad Library.

  4. Record a baseline

For each relevant ad, log the advertiser/Page identity, country, date checked, ad identifier or saved link, visible creative and copy, visible start or delivery date, platform, format, and any visible versions. Save a reference image or link using your team’s normal process. Record observations separately from interpretations: “same offer appears in three versions” is observable; “the offer is profitable” is not.

  5. Recheck and compare

A weekly check is a reasonable starting point, not a required industry cadence. Set the interval according to how quickly the category changes and how often your team makes decisions. On each revisit, note concepts newly observed, repeated versions, ads still visible, and ads no longer visible. Keep the country and filters consistent when comparing dates.

What to compare across ads

  • Market and language: Which countries are covered, and how do wording, offer, or localization vary?
  • Format and placement: Is the creative an image, video, or carousel, and on which Meta surfaces does it appear?
  • Message and offer: Record the hook, stated benefit, proof, promotion, and call to action visible in the ad. These are creative choices to study, not evidence that any choice caused results.
  • Iteration: Note multiple versions or recurring concepts when visible. Version counts indicate variation, not budget.
  • Time: Record visible start or delivery dates and whether an ad remains visible on later checks. Persistence can make an ad worth closer study, but it does not establish performance.

What Meta Ad Library reveals—and what it does not

Meta’s API documentation lists fields such as a library ID, creative content, Page name and ID, delivery dates, and where an ad appeared. Meta documents additional spend and impression ranges and demographic reach information for social-issue, election, or political ads. For ads delivered to the EU, its documentation also describes estimated impression and demographic targeting/reach information, plus beneficiary and payer information. Do not assume those special-category fields are available for ordinary commercial ads. See Meta’s Ad Library API documentation for the documented fields and scope.

Meta says, “To search for all ads currently running across Meta technologies, please use the Ad Library.” The public library is therefore the relevant place for the broad current-ad search described here; the API is not a general-purpose feed of all commercial ads worldwide.

A 2024 policy paper describes public web searches by location, category, advertiser, or keyword, along with saved searches, filters, and additional EU transparency fields. It also reports limitations in the API access process and observed inconsistencies between ads visible in an Instagram feed and their library status. Those are the paper’s findings from its 2024 analysis, not a guarantee that every current search is incomplete. Interface behavior and coverage may change.

Why ad longevity is only a clue

An ad that remains visible over time is a candidate for studying its hook, offer, and variations, but duration is an imperfect proxy for success. Ads can persist for reasons other than strong performance, including advertiser inertia; seasonal campaigns can be effective without running for a long time. The library’s ordinary commercial-ad view does not establish spend, conversion rate, return on ad spend, or detailed audience targeting. Use observed duration to generate a question for your own research, not as a verdict on a rival’s results.

When a monitoring tool or screenshot workflow helps

Manual Ad Library checks work for a focused watchlist. A competitor ad monitoring tool or creative swipe file may be useful if you need saved collections, historical records, or multi-platform research; evaluate any provider’s current features and coverage before relying on it. Provider descriptions are not independent product tests.

For a reference image of a publicly accessible Ad Library page, a screenshot API can save a capture alongside your notes. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It can capture a web page, but it does not replace Meta Ad Library’s search or provide ad-performance data. For repeatable capture, use a specific, shareable Ad Library URL and check that the page actually shows the results you intend to archive.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot with one GET request. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and response details.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://www.facebook.com/ads/library/ -o shot.webp

Before capture, it accepts cookie or consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I search the Meta Ads Library?

Open Meta Ad Library, choose the country you want to inspect, then search for a Facebook Page or a product/category keyword. Select the matching Page when you want a focused advertiser view.

How do I find ads that have been running the longest in the Facebook Ads Library?

Use visible start or delivery dates to identify older ads, then revisit and record whether they remain visible. Duration makes an ad worth examining, but does not show that it is profitable.

Can I use Meta’s Ad Library API to monitor every commercial ad worldwide?

No. Meta documents API access for political, election, or social-issue ads delivered worldwide during the past seven years and ads of any type delivered to the EU during the past year. For searching all ads currently running across Meta technologies, Meta directs users to the public Ad Library.
