Make’s Google Sheets “Watch Changes” module is not a website monitor: it watches certain edits made in the Sheets app, not changes on a competitor’s site.
What you will build
The workflow checks selected public pages on a schedule, compares a decision-relevant field with its prior value, and writes meaningful changes to a spreadsheet. Make documents an HTTP module that can call an API or download a webpage, and Google Sheets modules that can append rows. The comparison and extraction logic are part of your scenario design; Make does not promise universal automatic detection of every website change. See Make’s HTTP and Google Sheets integration.

Track a small number of fields that matter to a decision: a displayed price, plan name, availability label, headline, or announcement. A whole-page diff can be noisy when pages contain rotating content, timestamps, or changing scripts.
Set up the Make-to-Sheets monitor
- Choose the pages and fields. List the public URLs and one or two values to monitor on each. Prefer a public API or feed where it exposes the same information reliably. Record the target URL and field name consistently.
- Create a scheduled scenario. In Make, add the HTTP module Make a request and configure it to request the page or API. Add the relevant extraction and comparison steps, then connect a Google Sheets module that appends a row when the value changes. Module labels and available options may change; use the current Make scenario editor.
- Extract a stable value. Map the response to a single field, such as the price text or product availability. Web pages can render important content in the browser rather than return it in the HTTP response. If the value is absent or the page structure changes, treat that as an extraction failure to investigate—not as a confirmed competitor change.
- Keep a baseline for each URL and field. On the first successful check, store the observed value as the baseline. On later checks, compare the current value to the last successful observation for that same URL and field. Update the stored value after logging a genuine change.
- Append a change row. Use columns such as
checked_at,page_url,field,previous_value,current_value, andchange_note. Include the first observation as a baseline record, or keep it separately, so setup is not mistaken for a change. - Test before relying on alerts. Run the scenario against a page you control or a harmless test value. Confirm that the baseline is stored, an unchanged value does not produce a change row, and a changed value writes the expected before-and-after values.
For implementation patterns, compare Make’s documented module capabilities with the page you intend to monitor; the integration documentation does not guarantee extraction from every page or an automatic universal diff.

Do not confuse Sheets edits with website changes
Make’s Google Sheets Watch Changes module watches changes made by a user in the Google Sheets app. Make says: “The module only watches for changes made in the Google Sheets app by the user.” It does not detect a competitor’s site changing, newly added rows, or script/API edits to a sheet. If you need a scenario triggered when someone edits a configuration sheet, Make documents a separate Watch Changes setup using its Sheets add-on or a script and webhook: Make’s webhook documentation. That is different from scheduled polling of competitor pages.

Choose a monitoring route

Choose by whether the needed content is exposed, how stable extraction is, how quickly you need an alert, expected Make credit use, and how much noise or missed changes you can tolerate. Scheduled polling is not instant detection.

Use the least frequent interval that still supports your decision. Make’s pricing page currently lists a 15-minute minimum scheduled interval on Free and one-minute minimums on Core, Pro, and Teams. Make’s scheduling guide gives trigger-only examples: a five-minute schedule is 288 credits per day or 8,640 per month; hourly is 24 per day or 720 per month; daily is 30 per month. These are schedule examples, not a total for a working scenario: other modules and processed data add consumption. Check the current Make scheduling guide and monitor scenario usage.
Each module action consumes credits, so checking many URLs frequently can cost more than the schedule-only example. Reduce unnecessary polling, batch or group work where suitable, and choose the interval based on the business value of detecting a change sooner.

If you use Google Apps Script to send a Make webhook, Google lists account-dependent quotas that can change without notice. Its current Apps Script quota table lists URL Fetch at 20,000 calls per day for consumer accounts and 100,000 per day for Workspace accounts. Verify the live Google Apps Script quotas before relying on those limits.

Troubleshooting
- No useful value in the HTTP response: The page may render content in the browser or require a different public endpoint. Check the response content and status, and use a feed or API if it exposes the target data more consistently.
- Every check looks like a change: The extracted text may include rotating or incidental content. Narrow the comparison to the target field and normalize irrelevant whitespace or formatting before comparing.
- A real change is missed: Confirm the scenario ran, the extraction still points to the intended field, and the comparison uses the latest successful prior value for that URL and field.
- Rows appear for failed loads: Do not treat an error response, missing field, or timeout as a new value. Route failures separately for review and preserve the last known successful observation.
- Watch Changes does not fire: It is not a website-change trigger, and Make documents that script/API changes do not trigger it. Use the scheduled HTTP workflow for competitor pages; use the separate documented setup only for the Sheets-edit use case.
- Usage is higher than expected: Count all scenario module actions and processed data, not just scheduled trigger runs. Lower the check frequency or reduce the number of monitored URLs where the faster cadence is unnecessary.
