Monitor Cisco’s current security advisories and Manager’s advisory inventory, then review authentication, peering, API, application, and script logs across the control components. Treat suspicious records as leads—not proof of compromise—and validate them against known system IPs, expected peer roles, approved changes, and normal network activity. If indicators remain unexplained, preserve diagnostics and contact Cisco TAC before changing the system.
Know which components and advisories to monitor
Cisco has rebranded its SD-WAN components: vManage is now SD-WAN Manager, vSmart is Controller, and vBond is Validator. Older names still appear in some Cisco documentation, so match the terminology in an advisory to the component in your deployment.

Start with Cisco’s security advisories for the software trains you run. As of October 3, 2026, Cisco’s advisory for the Manager API Authentication Bypass Vulnerability, CVE-2026-76504, reports active exploitation in September 2026. Cisco first published the advisory on September 30, 2026, and last updated it on October 2. Its CVSS base score is 9.8, a vulnerability-severity rating—not a measure of how often deployments are compromised. Check Cisco’s live advisory for current status and instructions before acting.

Cisco says a Live Protect shield provides temporary, partial coverage for CVE-2026-76504; it is not a complete fix. Cisco identifies an upgrade to a fixed release as the way to remediate the vulnerability.

Use Manager’s Devices view to compare an event’s source address with the configured system IPs. An address or peer that is unfamiliar to the operator is not automatically malicious; establish whether it belongs to the documented architecture or an approved change.

For the 26.x-and-later Manager Monitoring Guide, Cisco documents Monitor > Advisories and a Scan now action. The guide says advisory collection is enabled when Cloud Services is activated and interval scanning is enabled weekly by default. Those UI labels and behaviors are specific to the documented releases; confirm them in the guide for the version you have installed.

- Open Monitor > Advisories in Manager and review the advisory inventory for affected software and devices.
- Use Scan now when a new control component is added or you need an immediate evaluation against newly relevant advisory data.
- Review whether devices are marked Affected or Potentially Affected. Cisco says potentially affected devices require detailed analysis; do not treat that label alone as a finding of compromise.
- Compare your installed release with each relevant advisory’s affected and fixed versions. Recheck the live advisory because those details can change.
Also follow Cisco’s advisory index. An inventory scan is useful for software exposure; it does not replace review of suspicious activity in logs.
Review the logs and events that can reveal suspicious activity
Review the control plane as a whole rather than relying on one log or one appliance. Cisco’s cited indicators cover Manager API and application activity, control-component authentication and peering, and script or deployment activity.

| Signal location | What to look for | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
Control-component /var/log/auth.log |
Accepted publickey for vmanage-admin from an unknown or unauthorized IP address. |
Compare the source with configured system IPs and approved access sources. An unfamiliar address warrants investigation, not an automatic compromise finding. (Cisco, Controller Authentication Bypass Vulnerability advisory.) |
| Control-connection peering events | Unexpected timing, unfamiliar addresses, or a peer role that does not match the expected architecture, especially vManage peer types. | Manually validate each relevant event against the expected topology, authentication records, approved changes, and user activity. (Cisco, Controller Authentication Bypass Vulnerability advisory.) |
Manager service-proxy access log: /var/log/nms/containers/service-proxy/serviceproxy-access.log |
Suspicious j_security_check requests from unknown or unauthorized addresses. Cisco’s CVE-2026-76504 example is a POST to /%6a_security_check with a 200 response. |
Check the request and source in context. The encoded character in Cisco’s example is illustrative; other encoded characters may be used. Do not rely on an exact string match. (Cisco, Manager API Authentication Bypass Vulnerability advisory, updated October 2, 2026.) |
Manager server log: /var/log/nms/vmanage-server.log |
Related encoded authentication paths and unexpected account names beginning viptela-reserved-; also suspicious WAR upload activity described in Cisco’s June 2026 file-write advisory. |
Correlate with the service-proxy entry and any related deployment activity. Cisco says indicator examples are not exhaustive and some patterns may occur in standard operations. (Cisco, October 2026 authentication-bypass and June 2026 arbitrary-file-write advisories.) |
Manager application-server log: /var/log/nms/vmanage-appserver.log |
Deployment records that do not match an approved WAR upload or planned change. | Check timing and user or change records alongside the server log; a suspicious-looking record needs contextual review. (Cisco, June 2026 arbitrary-file-write advisory.) |
Control-component /var/log/scripts.log |
Patterns identified in Cisco’s June 2026 privilege-escalation advisory. | Compare events with expected operations and the advisory’s current guidance; the presence of a pattern alone does not establish compromise. (Cisco, June 2026 privilege-escalation advisory.) |
Cisco’s examples are indicators to investigate, not a complete detection signature. For the October 2026 advisory, inspect the broader request behavior and surrounding records rather than searching only for the illustrated encoded path. For peer events, Cisco specifically calls for manual validation, with particular attention to vManage peering types.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsValidate a signal before declaring compromise
For each suspicious event, establish whether the source, timing, account, peer role, and activity fit the known deployment. Correlate related log entries rather than deciding from a single status code, address, or keyword.

- Compare IP addresses with the configured system IP inventory and authorized management sources.
- Check whether the peer type and connection timing match the expected topology.
- Match the event to a maintenance window, approved change, deployment, or documented user activity.
- Look for related authentication, API, upload, deployment, and script events across the relevant components.
- Ask Cisco TAC to assess records whose origin or meaning remains uncertain.
Cisco warns that some indicator patterns can occur during standard operations. An unexpected source or suspicious request path is a reason to investigate; it is not, by itself, proof that an attacker succeeded.
Preserve evidence, escalate, and remediate
If an indicator is identified, do not assume that upgrading alone clears a confirmed compromise. Cisco’s June 2026 remediation guidance says to involve TAC and preserve diagnostic data before an upgrade or configuration change. Its October 2026 CVE-2026-76504 advisory asks for a Manager admin-tech bundle and a Severity 3 TAC case referencing the CVE.
- Before an upgrade or configuration change, collect admin-tech files from all applicable Managers, Controllers, and Validators, following the Cisco procedure for the advisory. Cisco’s June guidance specifies log and tech options and says not to collect multiple vSmart admin-tech bundles simultaneously.
- Open a TAC case with the relevant advisory or CVE context and provide the collected diagnostics. For CVE-2026-76504, follow Cisco’s request for a Manager admin-tech and Severity 3 case.
- Follow TAC’s assessment and remediation guidance. For CVE-2026-76504, use the current advisory to select the first fixed release applicable to your train and verify compatibility before upgrading.
Where possible, retain logs outside the appliances so relevant records remain available for investigation. Keep that retention step within your organization’s approved logging and security practices.
