How to Monitor Backlinks and Get Alerts When They Change

To monitor backlinks, set alerts in a backlink platform for the site or page you care about, choose whether to track new links, lost links, or both, and inspect each alert before acting. Use Google Search Console’s Links report as a useful second view of links Google has found, not as a complete inventory or a change-alert service.

What backlink alerts tell you

A backlink alert tells you that a tool’s index detected a link appearing or disappearing. New-link alerts can help you spot fresh mentions, evaluate potential referral traffic, and study how competitors earn links. Lost-link alerts can flag pages worth checking for a possible recovery. Neither alert alone explains why the change happened or establishes that the link matters to search performance.

Monitoring scope matters: a whole-domain alert answers a different question from an alert for one landing page. Decide whether you need to watch your own site, a competitor, or a specific URL before setting anything up.

Set up backlink alerts

  1. Choose the target. Enter the domain or page you want to watch. Ahrefs documents alert scopes for a domain, subdomain, subfolder, or individual URL.
  2. Choose the change type. Enable new backlinks, lost backlinks, or both, depending on the job. For your own site, tracking both can surface gains and possible reclamation opportunities. For competitor research, new-link alerts can show which pages are attracting links.
  3. Set delivery and frequency. Choose the email and alert interval available in your account. Feature access and frequency options can vary by tool and subscription, so check the current account interface rather than assuming a particular schedule.
  4. Review the alert evidence. Open the linking page and the destination URL. Check whether the page still loads, where the link points, and whether it is relevant before contacting anyone or changing your SEO plan.

Ahrefs describes alerts for a specified domain, subdomain, subfolder, or URL that gains or loses backlinks (Ahrefs Backlinks alerts). Its Alerts page is another place to review the product’s alert offering.

Use alerts for competitor research and link recovery

Find competitor link opportunities

Set a watch on a competitor’s domain to see newly discovered links across its site, or target a specific competing URL to focus on links to that page. When an alert arrives, inspect the linking page and ask whether it points to a source, resource, or angle that could also be useful on your site. Treat the alert as a lead to investigate, not proof that the same link is available to you.

Investigate lost links on your site

When a lost-link alert appears, open the referring page and your target page. Check whether the referring page was removed, the link was edited or moved, the target URL changed, or the page is temporarily unavailable. If the link appears intentionally removed, decide whether a relevant, courteous outreach is appropriate; an alert does not establish the reason for removal.

How fresh are backlink alerts?

Database refresh intervals describe how quickly a vendor processes discovered data, not how quickly every changed page is crawled. Ahrefs says its fresh backlink index updates every 15–30 minutes, while a complete update across Internet backlinks takes about two months (Ahrefs Help Center). A newly changed link may therefore go unnoticed until the relevant page is discovered and recrawled.

Semrush reports that its Backlinks database updates hourly, its interface updates every 15 minutes, and recently appeared links are reported in around 40 minutes on average (Semrush Knowledge Base). These are Semrush’s stated figures, not an independent comparison or a guarantee for a particular link.

How to compare backlink-monitoring options

Option Useful for Scope or timing stated in the documentation Important limit
Ahrefs alerts New and lost link alerts, including competitor prospecting Domain, subdomain, subfolder, or URL; fresh index updates every 15–30 minutes Complete database update takes about two months; frequency choices can vary by feature and subscription. (Alerts; index timing)
Semrush Backlinks Competitor new- and lost-link monitoring Vendor reports hourly database updates, 15-minute interface updates, and around 40 minutes on average to report a recently appeared link Figures are vendor-reported averages and cadence, not a per-link SLA. (Semrush Knowledge Base)
Google Search Console Links report A supplementary view of links Google has found for a verified site Tables are limited to 1,000 rows It is a sample, may omit URLs, and the cited documentation describes viewing links rather than change alerts. (Google Search Console Help)

Compare tools using the target scope you need, whether both gains and losses are supported, available delivery schedules, and the distinction between index processing and web crawling. Don’t infer real-time or complete coverage from a short refresh interval.

Use Google Search Console as a second view

In Search Console, open the property for your verified site and select Links in the navigation. The report shows examples of links Google has found; Google explicitly says, “This report isn’t a comprehensive list of every link.” It may omit URLs, groups pages by canonical URL, combines duplicate links, and limits tables to 1,000 rows (Google Search Console Help).

Use the report to supplement a third-party alert workflow, not to replace it when you need alerts or competitor monitoring. The cited Google documentation explains how to view link data, not how to receive notifications when links change.

Monitoring checklist

  • Define whether you are tracking your own domain, a particular page, a competitor, new links, lost links, or both.
  • Choose the narrowest useful scope: domain-wide for a broad view, or a URL for a page-specific question.
  • Confirm the account’s current alert frequency and delivery settings.
  • Inspect the linking and destination pages before deciding a link was truly lost or taking action.
  • Use Search Console as a supplementary sample, not an exhaustive ledger.
  • Allow for discovery and recrawl delays; no cited index interval guarantees immediate detection of every change.

For screenshots of pages involved in link reviews or audits, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return an image or PDF; its capture process can accept cookie banners and remove supported consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed as clean shots, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers tools for AI agents including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

Example cURL request (see the ScreenshotNeo documentation):

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo offers 1,000 screenshots a month free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Learn about ScreenshotNeo or sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card.
