How to Monitor AWS Elemental MediaLive YouTube Streams with CloudWatch Alarms

Use CloudWatch to watch whether MediaLive is producing output and processing frames, then use YouTube Live Control Room to confirm how YouTube is receiving the stream. These views answer different questions: AWS metrics show activity inside MediaLive; YouTube’s health messages and real-time analytics show destination-side ingest. Neither alone guarantees that every viewer can play the stream.

What to monitor: AWS output and YouTube ingest

Build a two-part check. In CloudWatch, track MediaLive output activity and frame processing for the relevant channel, output group, and pipeline. During the event, check YouTube Live Control Room for stream health, status messages, and real-time analytics. Correlating both timelines helps distinguish an AWS-side production problem from a YouTube ingest problem.

Monitoring view What it tells you What it does not establish
CloudWatch MediaLive metrics Whether MediaLive is producing outputs and processing incoming frames, with dimensions that help isolate a channel, output group, or pipeline. That YouTube has successfully ingested the stream or that every viewer can play it.
YouTube Live Control Room YouTube’s reported stream health, status messages, error details, timestamps, and real-time analytics. That MediaLive has no underlying processing or output issue, or that every viewer’s playback is healthy.

AWS describes MediaLive metrics as near real-time and says CloudWatch retains them for 15 months. See Monitoring channels using Amazon CloudWatch metrics – MediaLive.

Which CloudWatch metrics should you watch?

ActiveOutputs: is MediaLive writing an output?

ActiveOutputs is the most direct output-activity signal in the documented MediaLive output metrics. AWS defines a value of zero as meaning none of the outputs are being successfully written to their destinations. Its dimensions include output group, channel, and pipeline, so inspect the dimensions that correspond to the output you expect to reach YouTube.

For an alarm intended to catch any missing output, AWS recommends the Minimum statistic. First account for startup, scheduled pauses, and the channel’s input-loss behavior: AWS notes that a configured pause on input loss can make a zero value intentional. Do not treat absent datapoints as a zero value; missing data has metric-specific meanings, including that a channel may not be running or generating output audio. Check the live channel’s dimensions and metric availability in the current AWS console or API. Details are in Output metrics – MediaLive.

Dropped frames: is processing keeping up?

Use the dropped-frame metrics to spot processing trouble, and review their time series by pipeline rather than relying on a single aggregate view. AWS says zero dropped frames is expected and indicates that MediaLive is processing incoming frames in real time. Select the statistic, period, threshold, and number of datapoints to match the interruption your team can tolerate; AWS does not prescribe a universal threshold for a MediaLive-to-YouTube stream.

NetworkOut: useful context, not delivery proof

NetworkOut counts traffic sent from MediaLive, but that traffic can include media output as well as HTTP GET requests for pull inputs, NTP, DNS, and other traffic. A nonzero value alone does not prove that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream. Similarly, Output4xxErrors is documented for HTTP delivery and may not be the right signal for an RTMP or RTMPS destination.

Build a useful CloudWatch dashboard and alarm

1. Establish a channel-specific baseline

  1. Open the MediaLive metrics in CloudWatch and select the dimensions for the channel, output group, and pipeline that carry the YouTube output.
  2. View ActiveOutputs and the relevant dropped-frame metrics over normal startup, steady-state operation, and any intentional pauses.
  3. Note when the channel is expected to run and which zeros or missing datapoints are normal for its configuration before deciding what should notify an operator.

2. Alarm on an expected output going absent

  1. Create an alarm for ActiveOutputs on the relevant dimensions.
  2. Use the Minimum statistic if the purpose is to detect when one or more outputs is not being produced.
  3. Choose the comparison operator, threshold, period, and datapoints to alarm on based on the channel’s normal behavior and the time your team can wait before responding.
  4. Configure missing-data handling deliberately. Do not silently equate no datapoints with a measured zero; confirm what missing data means for the selected metric and channel state.

Review startup and input-loss pause behavior before paging on zero, so an expected pause does not produce a false alarm.

  • Power-over-Ethernet (POE) pass-through. Rated at .75A max at 57vdc
  • 5v power through USB3 port or 5v wall transformer (or both). ~500ma consumption.

3. Add a dropped-frame alarm if it fits the response plan

Choose the dropped-frame metric and pipeline dimensions that reveal a processing issue on the path you care about. Set a threshold and evaluation window that reflect your own tolerance for interruptions. There is no AWS-published universal threshold for this MediaLive-to-YouTube use case; validate the alarm against the channel’s baseline and intended response.

4. Route alarms and channel events

CloudWatch alarms and MediaLive channel events are separate monitoring routes. MediaLive can emit channel alerts as CloudWatch events, which an event rule can send to a destination such as Amazon SNS. AWS describes event emission as best effort, so event notifications should complement, not replace, metrics alarms for the failure modes you need to catch. See Monitoring a channel or multiplex using Amazon CloudWatch Events.

Confirm YouTube is receiving the stream

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room for the event and monitor its stream health and status during the broadcast.
  2. Read the specific error message and follow YouTube’s instructions. YouTube says errors are timestamped and distinguishes critical from moderate severity.
  3. Compare the timestamp with CloudWatch metric changes and alarm history. A contemporaneous AWS output issue points to a different investigation path than a YouTube health error while MediaLive metrics appear normal.
  4. Review YouTube’s real-time analytics alongside stream health; do not treat an AWS output metric as a substitute for the destination-side view.

YouTube recommends testing before a live event and monitoring stream health while it runs. Its encoder guidance recommends RTMPS for RTMP-based streaming, provides supported settings and bitrate ranges by resolution, frame rate, and codec, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval without exceeding four seconds. These are ingestion configuration references, not a replacement for watching actual health. Follow the current settings for your event and diagnose against the exact message shown in Live Control Room. See See your live stream’s metrics, Live streaming error messages, and Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Troubleshoot common monitoring signals

Signal or symptom What to check Practical response
ActiveOutputs is zero Confirm the expected output group and pipeline dimensions; check startup, scheduled pauses, and whether input-loss configuration pauses output. If the output should be active, inspect the channel and its inputs, then correlate the metric time with YouTube’s status. If the pause is intentional, adjust alarm conditions or schedules to avoid paging on it.
No datapoints appear Determine whether the channel is running and whether the selected metric is being generated; missing data is not the same as zero. Verify the metric, dimensions, and channel state in the current console or API before changing alarm thresholds.
Dropped frames rise Inspect the time series and pipeline-specific data around the time of the rise. Correlate with the channel’s processing state and YouTube status, then choose an evaluation window and response appropriate to the observed interruption.
NetworkOut is nonzero but YouTube reports an issue Remember that the metric includes non-media traffic and does not establish successful YouTube ingest. Use YouTube’s timestamped health message and the other MediaLive output metrics to narrow the fault.
Output4xxErrors does not explain an RTMP/RTMPS issue The documented metric is for HTTP delivery and may not apply to the destination protocol. Use protocol-appropriate output signals and YouTube’s Live Control Room status instead of relying on this metric alone.
A YouTube error appears while AWS metrics look normal Compare the error timestamp with AWS metrics and inspect the exact error instructions. Investigate the destination-side ingest and event encoder settings; normal AWS output activity does not prove YouTube has accepted the stream.
