If you need an alert while nobody is listening, an OBS community plugin can detect a configured silence condition—but you must test its threshold and notification path before relying on it. No meter or health indicator alone proves that a relaxation stream sounds right.
What each monitoring method can—and cannot—tell you

A green meter is not a sound-quality verdict, and a healthy YouTube ingest is not proof that the mix is comfortable to listen to. Treat these checks as complementary.

Set up and test the complete audio path
- Play representative content. Use the same kind of relaxation audio you intend to stream, including quiet sections and transitions. Confirm that the expected source appears in the OBS audio mixer.
- Listen at the source and in OBS. OBS recommends checking the signal at the device where possible and again through OBS audio monitoring. If the material is stereo, confirm that both channels are present.
- Make a test recording. Record a representative session with the intended audio setup, then listen back. Check quiet passages, transitions, channel balance, noise, and any signs of distortion. YouTube likewise recommends pretesting with audio and movement similar to the planned event.
- Keep the test representative. A brief check that only captures a loud section will not reveal a track that becomes silent or unexpectedly quiet later.
OBS’s Audio Mixer Guide covers mixer meters, audio monitoring, and recording for review. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance recommends a pre-event test.

The moving colored bars in OBS indicate audio peak level. The mixer guide describes green as a typical region for background music and effects, yellow as a zone for stronger sources, and red as near clipping. Its peak indicator holds the loudest level for 20 seconds, which can help you spot brief peaks that are easy to miss.

Digital audio has a ceiling: OBS explains that audio exceeding 0 dBFS in the delivered stream can clip. Its technical documentation refers to -20 dBFS as an alignment level and -9 dBFS as a permitted maximum in the context of its meter design and safety margins. Those are technical references, not universal targets for relaxation music or ambience. There is no single ideal meter reading established for every mix; listen to the content and inspect the recording rather than chasing a color or number.

Add silence alerts only after testing them
The third-party OBS resource Audio Capture Alert describes real-time input monitoring, a configurable delay before an alert source triggers, and use cases such as a disconnected microphone or an audio capture device that stops playing. Check its compatibility with your installed OBS version and operating system before use.
- Choose a threshold and delay that distinguish a genuine fault from the quietest intentional passage in your stream.
- Trigger a known silence or low-signal condition and confirm that the alert actually fires.
- Verify that the alert reaches a place an operator will notice, including any off-site notification route you depend on.
- Restore normal content and check that quiet ambience does not produce nuisance alerts.
- Confirm that the monitoring and notification process remains active for the runtime you expect.
These steps are operational safeguards, not a guarantee of unattended reliability. No universal silence threshold or guaranteed off-site delivery is established for the plugin. Test the complete alert path on the actual machine before leaving the stream unattended.

OBS’s separate third-party Audio Monitor plugin can route a source to an audio device and provide separate monitoring by source or device. That can support human listening; it is not, by itself, silence detection.
Check YouTube’s incoming stream health separately
YouTube advises creators to monitor stream health and review messages during an event. The Live Streaming API exposes stream status, health status, and configuration issues. Its issue documentation includes noAudioStream for an ingest stream with no audio stream, along with audio codec, bitrate, sample-rate, and channel configuration issues.

These reports concern what YouTube receives. They do not certify subjective loudness, comfortable listening levels, or whether subtle noise is audible. Use YouTube health to diagnose ingest and configuration, not as a substitute for listening to the mix.

Encoder audio settings are not level targets
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists AAC or MP3 as supported audio codecs for RTMP/RTMPS, recommends 44.1 kHz stereo or 48 kHz for 5.1 audio, and lists 128 kbps for stereo in its recommended advanced settings. These are encoder configuration recommendations, not instructions to set a particular loudness or meter level. Check YouTube’s current guidance when configuring an encoder.
Troubleshoot the symptoms that matter
OBS meter is not moving
- Check that the intended source is active and that its device or playback is producing audio.
- Confirm the correct source is visible in the mixer, then listen through OBS monitoring and make a test recording.
- If the source works locally but YouTube reports no audio stream, inspect the stream’s audio configuration and YouTube health messages.
Meter moves, but the recording sounds distorted
- Inspect the peak indicator and listen for clipping, especially during louder passages or transitions.
- Remember that 0 dBFS is the digital ceiling; reduce the source or processing level if peaks exceed full scale, then record and listen again.
The stream sounds too quiet or uneven
- Listen to the recording at a comfortable playback level and compare quiet and loud sections.
- Do not treat an OBS color zone as a universal loudness target. Adjust based on the actual material and review another recording.
A silence alert fires during quiet ambience
- Revisit the threshold and delay using the quietest intentional passage as a test case.
- Repeat both the nuisance-alarm test and a genuine silence test before relying on alerts.
YouTube reports an audio configuration issue
- Open the relevant health message and compare the incoming stream’s codec, bitrate, sample rate, or channel configuration with YouTube’s current encoder guidance.
- After correcting the encoder settings, verify the result in YouTube health and listen to the stream or a test recording; a cleared ingest warning does not assess sound quality.
