1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUse OBS’s Audio Mixer to confirm that your nature audio is reaching the stream, watch its peak meter for sudden level spikes, and listen to the feed at the source and again through OBS. Then check YouTube Live Control Room for delivery health. These checks answer different questions: a moving meter does not prove the ambience sounds right, and a healthy stream status does not confirm that viewers can hear balanced audio.
What to monitor—and what each check tells you
| Check | What it can tell you | What it cannot confirm by itself |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Audio Mixer meter | Whether the selected OBS source is producing a signal and how high its peaks are. | Whether the sound is pleasant, balanced or free of audible problems. |
| Listening through headphones or a monitor output | Whether the audio actually sounds as intended at that point in the signal chain. | Whether YouTube is receiving and delivering the stream correctly. |
| YouTube Live Control Room stream health | Whether YouTube reports a delivery or stream-health issue. | Whether the birds, wind and forest ambience sound good to listeners. |
OBS recommends keeping an eye on the meters during a stream, while treating much of the setup as “set once run forever.” For a continuous ambience stream, make that practical: confirm the signal before going live, then check the meter, listen periodically and review YouTube’s stream-health view while it is running.

Set up OBS to monitor the right audio
1. Find the intended source
In OBS, open the Audio Mixer and identify the source that carries the birds-and-forest audio. Start playback and confirm that its meter moves. If the source is absent from the mixer, inspect the scene and audio-source setup before relying on the meter.
2. Check stereo channels
OBS defaults to stereo. If the recording is meant to be stereo, check that both channel meters respond as expected. OBS notes that if only the first stereo meter moves, viewers will hear that source in the left channel unless routing or downmixing is changed. A one-sided signal may be intentional for some material, but it is worth investigating for a stereo nature recording.

- [XLR Mic Input] One XLR microphone input interface is set on the gaming audio mixer, which is great to up your audio quality with your XLR setup. The XLR mixer is a stepping stone to upgrade your live streaming. Audio mixer offered built-in 48V phantom power which opens up more choices for mics. Directly use it with your condenser microphone but do not solve added peripherals. (NOT available for USB mic)
- [Individual Channel Control] Gaming audio mixer for one mic recording with smooth volume slider fader take your streaming recording to a whole new level with full pleasure. Four independent channels set on the DJ mixer give audio volume of the MICROPHONE, LINE IN, HEADPHONE, and LINE OUT channels individual control. Configurable on the PC audio mixer instead of just operating on your game or streaming software.
- [Mute and Monitor] The front mute and monitor buttons but not at the back, make it easier to get the audio interface use. Ability to mute audio, the audio mixer for streaming prevents background noise from damaging your live broadcast. Real-time feedback between speaking and hearing will not distract your attention, which encourage you to speak more confidently. The sturdy-built control button allow you to operate freely and easily during live streaming.
- [Sound Effects] The computer sound mixer supports four pre-recorded customized button that can be recorded and activated at the press of button to post production. 6 kinds of voice changing modes change your output style. 12 auto tune changes the tone of your voice. The podcast mixer being able to add different and fun effects is a huge bonus for your streaming or game voice.
- [Controllable Vibrant RGB] RGB button on the audio mixer DJ meets different live streaming themes. Lights on the video mixer is vibrant but not harsh on your eyes. Flowing or frozen RGB color rotation in a decent pace presents a greatly strong impression as a "light show" to your audience. Even a streaming equipment accessory will not be dull looking when video production.
3. Listen at two points
First listen through the earliest available headphone or monitor output, such as the playback device feeding OBS. Then listen again through OBS Audio Monitoring so you hear the signal after it reaches OBS. OBS recommends recording a representative session and listening back before going live; this can expose problems that a moving meter will not.
4. Test with the real stream content
Before starting the continuous broadcast, test with audio and video similar to the planned stream—not silence or an unrelated clip. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the event. OBS likewise recommends making a recording and checking it before broadcast.
Read the OBS meters without mistaking them for a loudness target
The moving colored bar in OBS’s Audio Mixer is a peak meter: it shows peaks, not the perceived loudness of the whole ambience. The peak-hold marker preserves the highest reading for 20 seconds, making it useful for spotting an unexpectedly loud bird call, gust or other transient after it happens. OBS describes red as near clipping; clipping is distortion.

- Direct mixing of PC/gaming sounds into the streaming output
- Ultra-low noise analog mixer for streaming, podcasting and recording
- Stereo USB audio interface to connect your computer or mobile device
OBS’s guide gives general streaming advice for its meter colors: speech can sit in the lower red region, while background music and alerts should remain in green. That is not a numeric target for quiet nature ambience. A forest recording may have a different natural dynamic range, and meter similarity does not guarantee that two sources sound equally loud to viewers.
OBS’s technical details, published February 13, 2022, list an alignment level of -20 dBFS and a permitted maximum level of -9 dBFS for its meter. These are OBS meter reference values, not a YouTube loudness requirement or a guarantee against every downstream problem. The same technical note describes the smaller VU-style indicator as RMS integrated over 300 ms; OBS says it is closer to sound pressure than a peak meter, but less useful than a proper loudness meter.
Check for silence, clipping and one-sided audio while live
If the source meter stops moving
A missing input indicator means audio is not reaching OBS; it is a cue to investigate, not a diagnosis. Check whether the audio file or player is still running, whether the correct source is active in the current scene, whether routing has changed and whether connected capture equipment is still connected. Listen at the source output and then through OBS monitoring to locate where the signal disappears.

If the peak marker reaches red
Watch the peak-hold marker for 20 seconds after a loud transient. If peaks approach clipping or the sound distorts, reduce the level at the source device first, then check the operating-system level and OBS fader. Listen again after each adjustment so you do not solve a meter issue by making the stream inaudibly quiet.

Check the recording, source configuration and OBS routing. If the content should be stereo but only the first channel is active, viewers may hear it only on the left. Correct the routing or downmix only if that matches the intended sound; do not treat a one-channel reading as normal stereo output.
If the meters move but the stream sounds wrong
Listen to the actual program feed rather than relying on the meter alone. A technically active source can still sound distorted, too quiet, unbalanced or otherwise unsuitable. Compare the source-device output with OBS Audio Monitoring, then check YouTube’s stream health separately for delivery problems.

Peak level, loudness and YouTube settings are different things
For consistent programme loudness readings, the European Broadcasting Union’s EBU Mode defines momentary loudness over 400 ms, short-term loudness over 3 seconds and integrated loudness from start to stop. EBU R 128 recommends -23 LUFS ±0.2 LU, or ±1 LU for live programmes. Those are broadcast recommendations, not an identified YouTube target for birds-and-forest ambience.
The EBU’s streaming supplement, version 3 published in November 2023, says streaming services typically use target loudness levels higher than broadcast standards. The reviewed official guidance does not establish a YouTube-specific LUFS target for this kind of continuous stream, so do not apply -23 LUFS as if YouTube required it.
Likewise, YouTube’s encoder settings are not loudness targets. Its live-encoder guidance lists 128 Kbps stereo audio and a 44.1 kHz stereo sample rate; those describe encoder settings, not how loud the programme should sound.

Optional: add loudness readings with an OBS dock
If peak readings are not enough and you want programme-loudness context, the OBS Forums resource page describes Loudness Dock 0.5.1. It provides momentary, short-term and integrated loudness, loudness range (LRA) and true peak for audio track 1. The page lists OBS Studio 28.0.0 as the minimum version and Windows, macOS and Linux as supported platforms; it reports an update dated February 3, 2026. Check the resource page for compatibility before installing it.
This dock adds measurements; its resource page does not establish unattended silence detection or level alerts. Do not rely on it as a 24/7 alerting system.
What an operator can—and cannot—verify unattended
The available official guidance supports checking meters, listening to the feed and watching YouTube’s stream health. It does not specify an unattended alert method for prolonged silence or level faults during a continuous broadcast. A meter only helps while someone checks it, and periodic listening only helps while someone is listening. Do not assume that a healthy stream-health status detects an ambience fault.

Or let it run in the cloud
If your continuous YouTube stream uses uploaded recordings or a playlist, StreamNeo can keep that video playing from the cloud rather than requiring your computer and home connection to stay on. It does not monitor whether the ambience sounds right, so keep the listening and audio checks above in your workflow.
- Upload your recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud.
Nothing has to stay on at home. StreamNeo streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and offers the first day free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
