You can often replace a camera’s unusable rear screen with a phone or tablet app, a computer tether, or an external display—but the right option depends on the exact camera model. First decide whether you need only a live image, or also remote shutter release and settings control: a video connection may provide a view without providing control.
Choose the kind of access you need
“Monitor” and “control” are separate capabilities. A phone app or tethering program may show a live view and expose camera controls; an HDMI or UVC connection may only send video to a display. Check each feature for your camera model rather than assuming that a working picture means you can change settings or trigger a shot.

- Framing: You need a live image on another screen.
- Image review: You need to view playback or transferred files, not necessarily a live feed.
- Remote operation: You need a shutter release, video recording, focus, or settings controls. Confirm which of these the proposed setup actually supports.
Ways to use another screen
Phone or tablet app
If the camera maker offers an app for your model, this is a practical first option when a mobile display and remote capture are enough. FUJIFILM’s Camera Remote documentation describes remote live-view photography from a smartphone or tablet, along with adjustment of some settings. Its documented workflow requires Wi-Fi, and the available controls depend on the camera. FUJIFILM also lists models that do not support remote live view. Check the model list and the feature details in FUJIFILM’s Camera Remote live-view instructions before relying on it. The documentation also warns that camera controls other than the power button may be disabled while the camera is connected wirelessly.

Tethering connects a camera to a computer so compatible software can provide a live view and remote controls. It is model- and software-specific, not a universal feature. FUJIFILM documents tethered photography over wireless LAN or USB for the X-M5; see its X-M5 product information for that camera’s workflow. Nikon’s NX Tether version 2.5 supports remote live view and control on compatible cameras, while some models have limited tethering functions. Nikon describes USB tethering and wireless tethering for specified compatible cameras and transmitters, with possible functional limitations. Check the current camera list and system requirements on Nikon’s NX Tether page; do not assume these details apply to other models.

External display over HDMI or UVC
A supported camera can send video to a compatible monitor or control device over HDMI or USB Video Class (UVC). Sony’s Monitor & Control guide makes an important distinction: HDMI monitoring can be paired with remote control over Wi-Fi or USB, but UVC monitoring does not support remote control. The guide requires a supported camera and control device. HDMI uses an HDMI cable; its UVC workflow uses a USB Type-C cable and requires the camera’s USB Streaming setting. Sony specifically says a USB Type-C-to-HDMI adapter cable cannot be used in that documented workflow. These requirements are specific to Sony’s Monitor & Control setup, not a universal rule for all cameras. Consult Sony’s HDMI/UVC connection guide and verify compatibility before connecting.
In Sony’s documented workflow, the live view shown is HD (1080p), even if the camera’s output is 4K (2160p). Sony also notes that unstable Wi-Fi can cause focus or framing overlays to appear offset from the live view.

How to check compatibility before setting up
- Identify the exact camera model. Look up its official manual or support page for remote live view, tethering, HDMI output, and USB Streaming or UVC. Check firmware and software requirements as well.
- Match the feature to your goal. Confirm whether the camera and app or software provide framing, playback, focus, settings changes, still capture, or video recording. A listing for live view alone does not establish full remote control.
- Choose a connection the camera supports. For a phone app, confirm the model supports the feature and note whether Wi-Fi is required. For a computer, verify the maker’s tethering software and supported-model list. For an external display, confirm that the camera and receiving device support the same HDMI or UVC workflow.
- Check both ends of every cable. Match the camera-side connector and output mode to the receiver’s input. For Sony’s documented UVC path, use the specified USB Type-C connection—not a Type-C-to-HDMI adapter cable. A cable that physically fits does not by itself confirm compatible video output or remote control.
- Test the complete setup. Verify that the live image appears and separately test the controls you need before depending on the arrangement. With wireless monitoring, check that the connection is stable enough for accurate framing and overlays.
Which route should you try first?
| Option | What it can provide | Connection and compatibility checks |
|---|---|---|
| Maker’s phone or tablet app | May provide live view, some settings, and remote capture; features vary by camera. | Confirm exact model support, app requirements, Wi-Fi needs, and the controls exposed. |
| Computer tethering | May provide remote live view and camera control through compatible software. | Confirm the camera is supported, check system requirements, and use the specified USB or supported wireless connection. Some models may have limited functions. |
| HDMI monitoring | Provides a video feed to a compatible display; in Sony’s documented setup, remote control can use a separate Wi-Fi or USB link. | Confirm camera output, cable connectors, display compatibility, and whether a control link is needed. |
| UVC monitoring | Provides a video feed to a compatible device; Sony’s documented UVC workflow does not support remote control. | Confirm camera and device support, USB Streaming setting, and required USB connection. |
When a picture appears but control does not
- Live view works, but there is no shutter or settings control: The connection may be monitor-only. Check the app or software’s documented controls, or whether the HDMI workflow requires a separate control link.
- The app connects but cannot show live view: Check whether the exact model supports remote live view and whether the app’s required Wi-Fi connection is active.
- The computer does not recognize the camera: Verify the supported-model list, software and operating-system requirements, and the specified USB or wireless connection. Nikon notes that tethering functions can be limited on some supported models.
- The external image or overlays are unreliable: Recheck the output mode and cable path. For Sony’s Monitor & Control setup, unstable Wi-Fi can misalign focus or framing overlays relative to live view.
