Monitor an AI agent as you would a user and a workload: give it a distinct identity, record what it does through its tools and execution environment, protect those records, and make sure an accountable person can investigate and stop it. A model trace or transcript alone cannot show the full picture. The UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) puts the principle plainly: “Agentic AI activity should be treated as a form of user activity.”
What should an AI-agent audit record capture?
Build a record that lets an investigator connect an agent’s activity to its identity, permissions, tools, resources, and surrounding system events. The NCSC specifically recommends access to agent telemetry such as traces and transcripts, alongside sandbox events such as access logs, proxy logs, and network activity. The joint guidance hosted by the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security also calls for monitoring internal agent operations, behavior, and identity or privilege changes.

In practice, correlate agent and environment events so a reviewer can establish who or what acted, when it acted, what identity and permissions it used, which tool or resource it touched, what action resulted, and what else was happening around that action. Include permission changes: a new or expanded grant can matter as much as the action it enables.
Do not treat a transcript or private model reasoning as a complete audit trail. A transcript may show what an agent said, but not necessarily every tool call, network request, access event, or change in its execution environment. Nor does the NCSC guidance establish that private reasoning is universally available, reliable, safe to retain, or sufficient to reconstruct activity. Record the telemetry your implementation actually provides, and pair it with action and environment events.

The joint guidance on careful adoption of agentic AI discusses risks including prompt injection, unauthorized actions, cascading failures, identity spoofing, and privilege drift.
How should a SOC set up monitoring?
1. Define the agent’s scope and owners
Before connecting an agent to security workflows, inventory the agent and model or service it uses, its tools, data stores, identities, permissions, and the systems it can affect. Write down its permitted task, triggers, and boundaries. Assign named people to deployment, access approval, monitoring, incident review, and the authority to stop it. Include the deployment in the organization’s existing cybersecurity risk processes rather than treating it as a separate governance island.
2. Give the agent a distinct, least-privilege identity
Use an identity that lets the SOC distinguish this agent from a person, another agent, or a shared service account. Limit access to what its assigned task needs. Record identity and privilege changes so investigators can spot unexpected grants, drift, impersonation, or misconfiguration. These controls give activity logs useful context: an action cannot be assessed properly without knowing which identity performed it and what that identity was allowed to do.

3. Correlate agent events with environment telemetry
Collect agent traces and transcripts where appropriate, then correlate them with relevant tool, access, proxy, and network events from the sandbox or execution environment. Include identity and privilege changes and the outcomes of actions. The objective is not simply to retain more data; it is to give responders enough context to determine whether the agent stayed within its task and whether its tools or environment were manipulated.
4. Alert and review in time to intervene
Make agent activity part of security operations monitoring and incident response. Route unexpected or concerning behavior for timely review, with coverage that matches the hours the agent is allowed to operate. Useful analyst questions include:
- Was this action within the agent’s assigned task and trigger conditions?
- Were its identity and permissions expected at the time?
- Were the tool, resource, and destination approved?
- Did the action require human approval, and was that approval recorded?
- Do nearby access, proxy, or network events point to manipulation, compromise, or an unintended side effect?
These are practical review questions derived from the monitoring areas in official guidance, not a quoted official checklist. For consequential actions, use human oversight together with technically enforced controls; a person cannot meaningfully inspect every fast-moving action after it has already happened. A separate AI “judge” may help with oversight, but the NCSC cautions that it has limitations and second-order effects and should be independently evaluated.

How can the SOC preserve trustworthy logs?
Audit data may include sensitive prompts, transcripts, identifiers, and operational details. Set access and retention policies, restrict access to the records and monitoring pipeline, and monitor access to them. Protect logs against unauthorized modification or deletion; immutability is desirable where possible, but the NCSC does not present it as an absolute guarantee.

Assess the collection and monitoring infrastructure as part of the agent’s attack surface. Integrations should not give an agent a route out of its sandbox or broader privileges than its task requires. The general CISA guidance on logging business systems can complement the agent-specific advice, but is not itself agent-specific.
What should a containment and incident plan include?
Decide in advance how responders will stop agent processes and, where needed, restrict network access to agent infrastructure or interrupt communication with model inference services. A pause button in one interface is not enough if the underlying process or its connections remain active. Treat reports about an agent’s external activity as potential incident or abuse reports and route them through the organization’s incident process.

- [4 DIGIT COMBINATION] Set a personal four digit password with up to 10000 possible combinations for convenient keyless security. The resettable design lets you create a code that is easier to remember while helping keep your device secured.
- [DURABLE STEEL CONSTRUCTION] The plated steel cable and alloy steel lock body deliver dependable strength and stability for everyday use. The 43.3 inch cable offers useful around a desk leg or other fixed object for added theft deterrence.
- [EASY TO OPERATE] The lock arrives with the combination set to 0000 and is simple to unlock and use. To create a new password press the reset with a small tool while unlocked then hold it until the new code is fully entered.
- [WIDE DEVICE COMPATIBILITY] Designed to work with notebooks desktops and docking stations equipped with a standard security locking slot. It fits most laptops while some mini laptops with unusually small security slots may not be compatible.
Begin experiments in bounded, low-risk settings while human oversight is available. Expand the agent’s autonomy only as the team understands and has confidence in the controls; do not assume overnight or weekend operation is safe simply because the workflow appears routine. As the NCSC puts it: “If you cannot understand, monitor or contain an agent’s actions, it is not ready for deployment.”

Compare monitoring approaches against the control needs below rather than assuming a particular SIEM or observability product has been validated for agent auditing. Official sources provide recommendations, not vendor rankings, pricing comparisons, or product performance tests.
| Evaluation area | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Telemetry coverage | Can the approach connect agent actions and state, tool use, identity and privilege changes, and relevant access, proxy, and network events? |
| Detection and review latency | Can events reach a reviewer and be escalated in time to act? Is monitoring staffed for the agent’s operating schedule? |
| Evidence integrity and sensitivity | Are access restricted, records protected against tampering or deletion, and retention defined? Can sensitive log content be protected? |
| Human oversight | Are owners clear, are approval points meaningful for consequential actions, and does a responsible person have the authority and ability to intervene? |
| Containment scope | Can responders stop the process and restrict communications to agent infrastructure, rather than only pausing a user interface? |
| Identity and least privilege | Does the agent have a distinct identity, task-limited access, and visible permission changes? |
How does this fit into wider AI security governance?
Agentic systems can plan and act through tools, data sources, memory, and workflows. That creates dependencies and potential failure paths beyond those of a text-only assistant. CISA and international partners’ May 1, 2026 announcement of joint adoption guidance recommends aligning agent risk management with existing cybersecurity frameworks, limiting broad access, using layered defense and strong identity management, and performing threat modeling, continuous monitoring, and regular assessments. Its scope is agentic AI adoption in IT environments generally, not a prescriptive SOC standard. See the CISA and partners’ guidance announcement and the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security-hosted joint guidance.
NIST’s NCCoE Agentic AI Identity and Authorization project includes cybersecurity operations among its use cases and describes a planned SP 1800-series practice guide. NIST’s SP 800-53 Control Overlays for Securing AI Systems project lists single-agent and multi-agent systems among proposed use cases. These are project developments, not evidence that a final specialized agent-audit standard is already available. See the NCCoE project resource hub and the NIST CSRC project overview.
