To catch an OBS stream outage, monitor both OBS Studio and YouTube Live Control Room: OBS shows what your encoder is doing locally, while Live Control Room shows whether YouTube is receiving a healthy stream. For a temporary connection drop, let OBS’s automatic reconnect try first. If OBS itself has crashed, reconnect alone will not relaunch it; external monitoring and OBS WebSocket can support a restart workflow, but you must configure, secure, and test that workflow yourself.
Set up monitoring before you go live
Prepare the stream and check the preview
Set up your encoder and YouTube stream in advance. YouTube recommends starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the event, then checking the preview in Live Control Room before going live. Test with representative audio and motion so you can notice problems that a static or silent preview would miss. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance covers connecting the encoder with the stream URL and key: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Keep both status views available
- In OBS: watch the connection indicator and dropped-frame behavior, and confirm the local output looks and sounds right.
- In YouTube Live Control Room: check stream health and status messages to see what YouTube is receiving. YouTube identifies Live Control Room as the place to inspect live-stream metrics and health: See your live stream’s metrics — Computer.
These views answer related but different questions. OBS remaining open does not prove that it is still sending data, and a healthy-looking local output does not prove that YouTube’s ingest is healthy.

Identify what failed before restarting
A stream may fail at the local encoder, on the connection from your computer, or along the ingest path to YouTube. Use the symptoms to decide what to check rather than issuing repeated restart commands.

If OBS output is faulty
Check that the intended sources are active, inspect OBS for encoder errors, and look for unusually high CPU load. If the local output itself is missing, frozen, or otherwise wrong, a network reconnect may not address the cause. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance covers source, encoder, and CPU checks: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.
If OBS reports dropped frames or disconnects
OBS describes dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the chosen bitrate; enough dropped frames may lead to disconnection. Its connection guidance says intermittent disconnections and dropped frames are extremely unlikely to be caused by OBS Studio itself. Investigate outbound connectivity, upload capacity, and network contention instead of assuming that restarting OBS will fix them: OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting.

If OBS looks healthy but YouTube does not
Compare OBS’s local connection and output with YouTube’s stream health and status messages. If OBS appears to be sending normally but YouTube is not receiving a healthy feed, examine the outbound path and available upload headroom. A dashboard status is evidence about YouTube’s received stream, not a guarantee about what every viewer can play.
Choose the right recovery method
| Approach | Best fit | What it does not do by itself |
|---|---|---|
| OBS automatic reconnect | A transient connection drop while OBS is still running. | It is not a documented way to relaunch OBS after the process crashes. |
| External monitor with OBS WebSocket | A setup where a separate, always-on tool can check OBS state and issue remote-control actions. | WebSocket does not supply an outage detector, deployment, credential management, or proof that YouTube ingest recovered. |
| Backup encoder | Events where a separate encoder is justified by the consequences of losing the primary stream. | Redundancy does not help unless failover is configured and tested. |
Use OBS automatic reconnect for connection drops
When OBS loses its connection but remains running, allow its automatic reconnect behavior to attempt recovery. The sources do not establish a universal retry delay or maximum-retry value for current OBS versions, so do not rely on a copied setting as a guarantee. If the encoder process has exited, automatic reconnect cannot restart that process.

Use WebSocket only with a tested external monitor
OBS Studio 28 and later include WebSocket remote control, which external tools can use. Enable and protect remote control with a password; OBS’s guide explains the feature and security setting: OBS Remote Control Guide. A monitor must determine what state OBS is in before sending a start or restart action, and it needs a way to verify that the action worked. A blind loop can trigger repeated or conflicting commands. Those are implementation safeguards, not a turnkey OBS recipe.
Do not confuse YouTube auto-start with crash recovery
YouTube’s optional auto-start and auto-stop settings control whether the stream starts or stops when the encoder does so. The settings documentation does not describe them as a monitor for OBS health or a mechanism for relaunching OBS after a crash: Manage live stream settings.

Verify that the stream is back
- Check OBS to confirm the encoder is running and sending output.
- Open Live Control Room and confirm YouTube reports a healthy incoming stream rather than relying only on the OBS connection indicator.
- Inspect the preview or viewer-facing watch page, and check both audio and video.
- If the stream is still unhealthy, return to the failure classification: inspect local sources and encoder status, then outbound connectivity and YouTube status. Avoid repeated restarts without identifying which part is failing.
YouTube recommends checking the preview, monitoring stream quality, and preparing a backup encoder for higher-stakes events. It also recommends testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable before the event. A backup is an optional reliability measure, not a requirement for every stream: YouTube live streaming tips — Computer.
Reduce the chance of another outage
- Leave upload headroom. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend capacity for “primary + backup + 20%.” This is an official recommendation, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service: Streaming tips.
- Address unstable capacity. If dropped frames recur, reduce bitrate or resolve competing network use, then test again with representative content.
- Exercise recovery before the event. Test the automatic reconnect path and, if you have a backup encoder, the actual failover procedure. Confirm YouTube receives the recovered stream.
- Keep access secure. Password-protect OBS WebSocket and avoid exposing remote control to untrusted access.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps playing uploaded recordings while your computer is off, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams uploaded video to YouTube, not from a camera. Every slot supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode, and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo, then start your free first day.
