They cover different failure points; for an unattended stream, configure alerts and test that they reach a person.
Use two monitoring layers
YouTube can report what it receives, while OBS can report what the streaming computer is sending and how that computer is performing. Neither view alone proves the whole path is healthy.

Keep the relevant event’s Live Control Room link available to whoever is on call. YouTube’s help documentation describes stream health, errors, and audience metrics in its live metrics guide.

Check OBS WebSocket availability
OBS Studio 28 and later include OBS WebSocket by default. For earlier OBS releases, the project points users to separately downloadable releases. OBS WebSocket allows compatible external tools to automate or control scenes and sources; it is not itself a complete phone dashboard. See the OBS Remote Control Guide and the obs-websocket project.

Use authentication and a deliberate network path
- Open OBS WebSocket settings. In OBS, go to Tools → obs-websocket Settings. The project says a password is generated on first load and can be changed there. Keep password protection enabled; OBS recommends it to prevent unauthorized control.
- Choose a compatible client. Confirm the client supports your OBS version and whether it is read-only, offers controls, or both. Routine monitoring is safer when it does not require stream start/stop permissions.
- Decide how you will connect while away. The OBS project describes phone and tablet control on the same local network. For WebSocket 5.x, the default server port is 4455 and can be changed in settings. Do not expose the control interface directly to the public internet without a deliberate secure remote-access design.
- Test from the actual location and device. Confirm the dashboard can reach OBS through the network arrangement you intend to use, and verify what happens if the connection drops. Treat the WebSocket password as a sensitive credential because a client may be able to control scenes or streaming actions.
Before relying on a third-party dashboard outside your home or studio, check its current network design, authentication, credential handling, support status, and whether it sends data to its provider. A phone or tablet alone does not provide secure internet-wide access.
Choose useful signals and alerts
A dashboard is useful only if it tells you about conditions that need action. Set alerts for sustained symptoms rather than treating every momentary fluctuation as a failure. Pair OBS-side signals with YouTube’s health status, and decide who responds when an alert arrives.

- OBS offline or disconnected: Indicates OBS is no longer reporting an active output, but check YouTube as well to establish the platform-side state.
- Sustained low or zero bitrate: May indicate that OBS output or the connection is stalled. Compare the OBS reading with YouTube stream health before deciding the stream is down.
- Network-dropped frames: OBS says these point to an unstable connection to the remote server or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Enough drops can disconnect the stream. See OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide.
- Rendering or encoding skips: Can point to local rendering or encoding performance trouble. Use OBS Stats or logs to diagnose rather than assuming the network is at fault.
- Resource pressure: CPU, FPS, memory, or disk readings can help identify a constrained machine or storage. Which metrics appear depends on the dashboard and computer.
- YouTube-reported stream-health error: Follow the error and instructions in Live Control Room; this is the platform-side view, distinct from OBS’s local output status.
Control OBS documents a phone display for bitrate, dropped frames, and stream duration; its streaming documentation says the bitrate reading updates every two seconds. OBS attributes dropped frames to an unstable connection or insufficient capacity for the configured bitrate. Investigate upload stability, network route, VPN or security and network-optimization software, drivers, and network hardware as appropriate. OBS’s dynamic bitrate adjustment can lower bitrate to reduce dropped frames, but OBS notes that this reduces video quality and does not fix the underlying cause.

Do not treat one brief bitrate dip as proof of a failed stream. Use a sensible delay for sustained-condition alerts and check both OBS state and YouTube stream health. A stream can look active in one place while having a problem at the other.
Make alerts actionable for a 24/7 stream
- Define the response. For each alert, specify who is notified, how they should confirm the issue in OBS and Live Control Room, and who is authorized to restart or change the stream.
- Test delivery to a person. Trigger a safe test alert and verify it arrives through the notification route the on-call person actually uses. A dashboard that only displays a warning when opened is not a notification system.
- Test recovery deliberately. Confirm that the responsible person knows how to respond to a disconnect and that any restart or recovery procedure works. Do not assume a successful dashboard connection means recovery has been tested.
- Review access periodically. Remove access that is no longer needed, keep credentials private, and check whether client or OBS updates change connection behavior.
