To catch an LLM agent acting outside its assignment, first define what it is allowed to access and do, then compare its activity against that boundary using records the agent cannot alter. Monitor the process, tool calls, file changes, and network activity; investigate deviations; and limit damage with restricted permissions, isolated execution, and approval for consequential actions. There is no single reliable detector that establishes whether every local agent is behaving safely.

What counts as a rogue agent?

“Rogue” is most useful as a description of an action that exceeds the agent’s approved scope—not as a claim about a model’s hidden intent. An action can be technically valid and still be wrong for the task: for example, a file tool reading a credential file when the assignment only required editing a project document.

An agent’s practical risk comes from the authority and tools around it: its operating-system identity, readable and writable files, shell access, connected MCP servers, credentials, network destinations, and ability to affect other systems. Monitoring should make those powers and their effects visible.

How can I tell whether an AI agent is running on my computer?

Start with the operating system’s process and application records, rather than relying only on what the agent says in a chat window. Identify the agent process, its parent process or launcher, and the user account under which it runs. Trace the launch path far enough to identify any helper processes or local MCP servers it starts.

Then establish what that specific setup is authorized to use. Record the approved commands and tools, MCP servers and versions, directories it may read or change, credential scopes, and permitted network destinations. An agent’s presence alone does not show that it has accessed a particular file or sent data anywhere; that requires activity records.

What should I monitor?

Collect enough context to connect an action to a process, user, and session, and to determine its outcome. Useful records include:

  • THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
  • Process launches, parent process, operating-system identity, and command arguments.
  • Tool calls and their parameters, including shell commands and calls made through MCP servers.
  • File reads and writes where the available monitoring can capture them, with particular attention to changes and sensitive paths.
  • Network requests and destinations, plus the identity of the process making them.
  • Approvals, denials, resulting changes, and relevant timestamps.

Application logs can explain an agent run, but should not be the sole forensic record: the agent or its operator may be able to change or suppress them. Send records to a central or otherwise separate system that the agent cannot control. Redact secrets and personal data rather than keeping sensitive values in logs.

Which activity should trigger an alert?

Set alerts against the agent’s approved baseline, not against a generic notion of “normal AI behavior.” A useful alert is a lead for investigation, not proof of malicious intent. Prioritize actions that change the agent’s access, expose sensitive information, or exceed the task’s boundaries.

  • Reading credential files or other sensitive locations outside the approved paths.
  • Unexpected network destinations, bulk reads, or unusual data-transfer activity.
  • New or changed MCP servers, tool definitions, or launch commands.
  • Unusual tool-call frequency, elevated privileges, or admin-level queries.
  • Repeated attempts to bypass approval, or changes to agent instructions, configuration, or CI files.

A benign task can generate activity that looks unusual, so tune thresholds and permitted destinations to the work the agent is meant to do. Preserve enough event context to distinguish a legitimate operation from a scope violation.

How do I check what an MCP server can access?

Treat a local MCP server as a program running with the permissions granted to it. Before connecting one, verify its publisher and source, inspect its launch command and requested permissions, review its tool descriptions, and pin a version that has been checked. Keep an approved server registry and revisit approval if a server or its tool definitions change.

Grant access only to necessary filesystem paths and disable network access unless the task requires it. Validate tool inputs and outputs, and avoid exposing raw shell execution or arbitrary model-supplied URLs. Using stdio avoids a listening network endpoint, but does not restrict the server process’s filesystem access, credentials, or outbound network connections.

For destructive, financial, or data-sharing operations, require explicit human approval and show the exact tool arguments before execution. Enforce authorization in trusted execution controls or the downstream system; do not leave the decision solely to the model.

How can I test whether the safeguards work?

Test in a resettable environment with no unnecessary access to real secrets or production systems. Check direct and indirect prompt-injection attempts, requests for unauthorized tools, attempts to access sensitive files, possible data-exfiltration routes, and the boundaries of the execution sandbox.

Judge the result by actual permissions and side effects: whether the file was read, the tool ran, the destination was reachable, or the action was blocked and recorded. A refusal or reassuring final answer does not establish that the underlying system prevented the action. OWASP’s AI/LLM testing guidance names promptfoo as an example of a probing framework; that is not evidence that it monitors a local computer’s processes, files, or network traffic.

What should I do if activity exceeds the agent’s scope?

  1. Stop or isolate the process using your host’s established incident procedure. The correct action depends on the operating system and deployment; there is no universal stop command established by the guidance described here.
  2. Revoke or rotate credentials the agent could access, and block unauthorized network destinations where possible.
  3. Preserve independent activity logs, the relevant configuration, and the approved baseline before making changes that could erase evidence.
  4. Review affected files and downstream systems for changes, access, or data disclosure. Investigate the process, tool call, identity, and destination involved.
  5. Restore affected systems and narrow permissions or access paths before restarting the agent.

How do I reduce the chance of another out-of-scope action?

Monitoring helps identify and investigate activity; it does not prevent the activity by itself. Run agents under a separate, low-privilege identity in a restricted shell, development container, or disposable virtual machine. Do not mount the home directory or expose production credentials unless the task genuinely requires them. Use short-lived, narrowly scoped credentials, restrict outbound network access to what is needed, and require approval for actions that are hard to undo.

Check what each isolation layer actually covers. A sandbox may constrain one execution path while leaving shell commands, file tools, MCP servers, subprocesses, or network egress less restricted. Compare safeguards by what they block and record, whether the agent can tamper with the record, which paths they cover, and what host resources remain mounted or reachable. No single control replaces least privilege, independent logging, and review of consequential actions.

What does the available guidance establish?

OWASP’s AI agent security, MCP security, secure coding, model-operations, excessive-agency, DevSecOps, and AI/LLM testing guidance, accessed October 7, 2026, recommends defining boundaries, logging actions, limiting permissions, testing controls, and isolating execution. It does not establish a universal local detector, guarantee complete sandboxing, or provide a quantitative rate of rogue-agent incidents. Apply the recommendations to the particular operating system, agent, and tools in use.
