Use Urlwatch to check an official admissions page on a schedule and report changes to the content it can retrieve. Start with a direct URL job, switch to browser navigation if JavaScript is needed, and filter the page to reduce irrelevant alerts. A Urlwatch alert is a prompt to verify the notice on the university’s official portal—not confirmation that a deadline or decision applies to you.
Choose the official page to monitor
Indian admissions notices are spread across university websites and different admissions portals; there is no single established government-wide feed for every university’s updates. Find the exact page that publishes the schedule, notification, merit list, or other information you need. Confirm its URL through the university’s main website or its official admissions instructions.

For example, Punjab’s Department of Higher Education portal lists schedules and notifications; JoSAA publishes public notices and counselling schedules; and Savitribai Phule Pune University’s CCEP page lists admission notices and identifies an official Telegram channel for updates. These are examples, not a directory of all admissions pages. If a university publishes updates in more than one official place, decide which pages or channels are authoritative for your application and monitor each as needed. Check current links and notices on the institutions’ own sites because they can change. Punjab admission portal, JoSAA, SPPU CCEP.
Set up Urlwatch
Urlwatch compares a job’s processed output with its previous run and reports detected changes, including the changed URL and a unified diff. - Run Urlwatch once. This initializes its files and performs the first check. The first successful run establishes the comparison baseline; it is not a report of prior changes.
- Edit the jobs: run
urlwatch --edit. Add the official admissions page as a YAML job. For content present in the server’s response, a minimal job is:url: https://university.example/admissions/noticesReplace the example with the verified URL. If the page needs JavaScript to display its notices, use a
navigatejob instead; the precise configuration depends on the page and your Urlwatch setup. - Run Urlwatch again to check that the job fetches the expected material and to establish or refresh its baseline. Inspect output before relying on alerts.
- Configure reporting if needed: run
urlwatch --edit-configand set up a reporter such as email. Terminal output is another option. Reporters and integrations require your own configuration; alerts are not automatically delivered to every channel. - Schedule recurring runs. Cron is one documented option on systems that use it; Windows users can schedule Urlwatch with Task Scheduler. The interval depends on how often the program is invoked.
Choose between a URL job and browser navigation

Start with url and inspect the fetched or processed output. If the notice is absent because the page builds it in JavaScript, use navigate and test that the rendered text is captured. Urlwatch also supports command jobs, but a command is not necessary for ordinary page monitoring.
Filter out unrelated page changes
A whole admissions page may change for reasons unrelated to the notice you care about. Urlwatch supports filters, including CSS or XPath selection and text conversion or matching. A filter chain can select a page section, convert it to text, match relevant text, and sort the result. Choose a selector only after inspecting the actual page; there is no universal selector for Indian university sites.

- Identify the notice area or text that matters on the current page.
- Use a selection filter to isolate that part when the page structure permits it.
- Apply text conversion or matching to normalize or narrow what Urlwatch compares.
- Run the job and inspect its output and diff. Confirm the filter keeps the relevant notices and does not discard updates.
- Re-test the filter if the site layout changes. A narrowly focused filter can reduce noise, but it can also overlook changes outside the selected area.

Set a sensible check interval and notification route
The Urlwatch introduction recommends checking no more frequently than every 30 minutes. Your actual interval is determined by the schedule that invokes the program. For admissions pages, choose a schedule that suits how quickly you need to notice changes without polling more often than necessary. The documentation covers recurring execution in its quick-start guide.

Choose terminal output if you regularly check the machine running Urlwatch. Configure and test email or another supported integration if you want reports delivered elsewhere; the handbook lists reporters. A configured reporter is not a guarantee of delivery, so verify that reports arrive and periodically check Urlwatch’s own output.
Understand what an alert does—and does not—tell you
Urlwatch reports differences in the content a job successfully retrieves and processes when it runs. A notice added after one run may not be detected until the next scheduled check. The comparison does not establish whether a notice applies to your application, and it cannot guarantee that the university site is available or that a reporter delivers its message.

When an alert concerns a deadline, eligibility rule, merit list, or applicant-specific decision, open the official page and follow the university’s instructions. Continue checking any official application dashboard or portal required for your application; a page-change alert is not a substitute for applicant-specific status.

- No changes appear: the page may not have changed, the first run may only have created a baseline, or the filter may omit the changed section. Inspect the current job output and test the filter against the live page.
- The notice is missing from the captured output: the direct response may not contain JavaScript-rendered text. Test a
navigatejob and confirm it captures the rendered notice. - Too many alerts: unrelated parts of the page may be changing. Add or adjust a selector and text-processing filters, then verify that important notice content remains included.
- No email or integration report arrives: check the reporter configuration with
urlwatch --edit-config, inspect terminal output, and test the reporter. Urlwatch does not configure delivery automatically. - An alert conflicts with what the portal says: open the official page and review its current content. Urlwatch reports the difference between retrieved outputs; it does not determine the legal or applicant-specific meaning of a notice.
