What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Use systemd to keep FFmpeg running as a background service, journalctl to inspect its output, and YouTube Live Control Room to confirm that YouTube is actually receiving a healthy stream. These are three separate checks: a service can be active on your machine even when its input, stream key, network path, or YouTube ingest is failing.
What you need to monitor
Monitoring a YouTube stream means checking both the local FFmpeg process and the remote broadcast. systemd reports the service’s state and can restart it after configured failures. The system journal stores service output, including FFmpeg messages when they are written to standard output or error. YouTube Live Control Room shows whether the platform is receiving the stream and how it is processing it. None of these views replaces the others.

- systemd: Is the service running, stopped, or failing?
- journalctl: What did FFmpeg or the service report before and during the problem?
- YouTube Live Control Room: Is YouTube receiving the expected stream and showing the expected health or preview?
Get the current YouTube ingest details
In YouTube Live Control Room, retrieve the RTMPS ingest URL and the corresponding stream key for the broadcast. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL. Use the current values displayed for your stream rather than copying an endpoint from an old example; YouTube may show RTMP by default, with a control to reveal or select RTMPS. The URL and key are sensitive credentials. Do not publish a real key in a unit file example, log, screenshot, or source repository. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
FFmpeg’s output arguments depend on the input, destination, and installed build. Its protocol documentation shows a real-time file-to-RTMP example using -re and FLV output, but do not treat that as a complete command for every video or encoder. Check the documentation for your installed FFmpeg build if options differ from the current online manual: FFmpeg protocol documentation.

YouTube’s API documentation describes primary and backup RTMPS ingest addresses. Depending on the encoder interface, the URL and stream name may be separate fields, or may be combined as STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. Follow the format expected by your FFmpeg command and the current YouTube configuration; do not append the key twice or assume every interface separates the fields in the same way. See YouTube Live Streams API documentation.
Run FFmpeg as a systemd service
Have systemd supervise a foreground FFmpeg process: the service should remain attached to FFmpeg rather than launching it in the background and exiting. The example below is a template, not a ready-to-run configuration. Replace the executable path, input, output options, and destination placeholders with values appropriate to your host, media, FFmpeg build, and YouTube stream.
- Create a unit file. For a system-wide service, an administrator can create
/etc/systemd/system/ffmpeg-youtube.service. The following outline usesType=simplefor a foreground process. Confirm the directive and service behavior against the systemd version installed on your host.[Unit] Description=FFmpeg YouTube stream [Service] Type=simple ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg [input and encoding options] -i /path/to/input [output options] -f flv "<CURRENT_YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL_AND_KEY>" Restart=on-failure RestartSec=5s [Install] WantedBy=multi-user.target - Protect the credentials. The destination may contain the stream key. Restrict access to the unit and any credential source according to your host’s security policy. An environment file is not inherently secret: its permissions, ownership, backups, and access controls matter. Avoid placing real keys in broadly readable files or command examples.
- Load and enable the unit. After saving the file, run
sudo systemctl daemon-reload, thensudo systemctl enable --now ffmpeg-youtube.service. The first command makes systemd reread unit definitions; the second enables the service at boot and starts it now. - Check the initial result. Run
systemctl status ffmpeg-youtube.service. If the service fails or exits unexpectedly, inspect its journal output before changing retry settings.
FFmpeg options such as input pacing, codecs, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval depend on your source, intended output, encoder, and current YouTube requirements. The available evidence does not establish one universally correct set of encoding values for every stream. Use the requirements shown for the specific broadcast and the documentation for your installed FFmpeg build.

Choose a restart policy deliberately
The example uses Restart=on-failure and a five-second delay as an illustrative policy, not a universal recommendation. systemd restart settings determine which process exits, kills, or timeouts trigger another attempt. A deliberate stop by the service manager does not trigger an automatic restart under the documented restart semantics. Verify exact behavior against the manual shipped with your system; the online systemd service manual follows the project’s main branch: systemd.service.
- Use a restart policy only if automatic recovery from the failures you expect is desirable for this workload.
- Choose a delay that fits the host and service. Repeated fast retries can obscure the original error and add noise without fixing a persistent fault.
- A restart cannot repair a missing or unreadable input, an invalid key or URL, a network outage, unsupported output settings, or a rejected ingest. Read the first relevant FFmpeg error before increasing retries or delay.
Read service state and FFmpeg logs
Check the current service state
Use systemctl status ffmpeg-youtube.service for a concise view of the unit’s current state and recent messages. An active state means systemd considers the service active; it does not prove that YouTube is receiving a valid stream.
Inspect recent journal entries

journalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.service -n 100 --no-pager
To follow new entries as they arrive, run:
journalctl -f -u ffmpeg-youtube.service
Press Ctrl+C to stop following. The -u option filters by unit, while -f follows new journal entries. The cited journalctl manual is for systemd 255; option support and behavior can vary with the systemd version on your distribution, so consult the local journalctl manual if a command behaves differently: journalctl manual.
Verify the stream in YouTube Live Control Room
While FFmpeg is running, open the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room and check that the stream is present, the preview appears as expected, and the health indicators reflect the intended broadcast. This is the remote-side check. Local service status and journal output can help explain what FFmpeg is doing, but they cannot establish by themselves that YouTube has accepted and is processing the stream.
If systemd reports active but YouTube shows no preview or an unhealthy stream, compare the local and remote evidence. Check whether the input is readable, whether FFmpeg is producing output or reporting errors, whether the destination uses the current URL and matching key, whether the output is compatible with the encoder configuration, and whether the broadcast is in the expected state in Live Control Room. YouTube’s ingest documentation distinguishes the platform’s ingest endpoints from a local encoder process; a journal alone cannot identify a YouTube-side fault.

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | What to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Unit fails immediately | Recent journal entries, FFmpeg executable path, unit syntax, input path and permissions | Read the first FFmpeg or systemd error, correct the specific path, permission, or command problem, then reload the unit if its definition changed and start it again. |
| Service is active but YouTube has no stream | Live Control Room preview and health, FFmpeg output messages, destination URL and key | Confirm the current ingest details and the encoder’s expected URL/key format. Do not infer successful ingest from the local active state. |
| FFmpeg exits and systemd retries | The first failure message before subsequent attempts | Determine whether the failure is a transient process problem or a persistent input, credential, network, or output-configuration fault. Adjust restart policy only after identifying the cause. |
| Journal has no useful FFmpeg output | Whether FFmpeg is actually the foreground process under the unit and whether its messages reach standard output or error | Review the unit’s command and logging arrangement. Confirm that the service is not launching a detached process that exits before systemd can supervise it. |
| RTMPS connection or output is rejected | Installed FFmpeg protocol/build support, current URL, matching stream key, and YouTube’s current broadcast settings | Check the installed build’s documentation and the current Live Control Room values. Use RTMPS when supported and configured; YouTube describes it as RTMP over TLS/SSL. |
RTMP or RTMPS?
YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL. The useful choice depends on whether your FFmpeg build supports the required transport, which URL YouTube currently provides for the stream, and what your encoder command expects. Confirm the actual endpoint in Live Control Room rather than assuming an old or generic URL is still appropriate. The available documentation establishes RTMPS’s encryption description but does not establish that RTMP and RTMPS are otherwise interchangeable in every encoder or network setup.
