Use FFmpeg logs and exit status to detect local failures, then check YouTube Live Control Room’s preview and Health Indicator to confirm ingest and recovery. Match reconnect or output-recovery options to the failure they actually cover; an invalid key or unsupported format will not be fixed by restarting repeatedly.
What to monitor: process, transport, and YouTube ingest
Monitoring works best as separate checks because each sees a different failure:

- FFmpeg process: its exit status and stderr logs can reveal errors or a terminated process. FFmpeg’s command-line error handling is documented in its CLI manual.
- Service supervisor: a service manager can restart FFmpeg when it exits. A systemd watchdog concerns whether a service sends watchdog pings; that alone does not establish that YouTube is receiving usable media. See the systemd service documentation.
- YouTube ingest: the Live Control Room preview, Health Indicator, and error messages show whether YouTube is receiving and assessing the stream. YouTube says its dashboard checks the stream sent to YouTube and timestamps errors. Red messages are critical and may inhibit the event or cause viewer problems; yellow messages are moderate and may degrade quality. See YouTube’s stream health guidance.
A process can remain alive while sending media YouTube cannot use. If you need automated end-to-end monitoring, design a separate check against an appropriate health signal; a process-up check or watchdog ping is not a substitute.

Establish a healthy stream before automating recovery
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or open the live stream and copy its server URL and stream key into your FFmpeg output configuration. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send to your stream.
- Start FFmpeg and wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room. YouTube’s documented setup sequence is to start the encoder, wait for the preview, and then select Go live in the control room. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup steps.
- Check the Health Indicator and any accompanying messages. Confirm that the preview shows the expected audio and video before relying on automatic restarts.
YouTube identifies an incorrect stream format as an ingest error. Its listed format issues include video other than H.264 or audio other than AAC. Check the exact error and encoder output settings rather than assuming a restart will correct the format. See YouTube’s stream health guidance.

Choose recovery for the failure location
Input disconnects and supported HTTP sources
FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol implementation documents reconnect options such as reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_on_http_error, reconnect_streamed, reconnect_delay_max, and retry limits. These govern HTTP protocol reconnect behavior for applicable inputs. They do not automatically reconnect a YouTube RTMP or RTMPS output, nor do they recover every upstream source. Consult the FFmpeg protocol documentation and verify that the option applies to the protocol and position in your command.
Output failures and the FIFO muxer
FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer documents attempt_recovery for output failures. Its drop_pkts_on_overflow option trades completeness for continued processing: dropping packets can omit part of the stream, while the default behavior blocks until the muxer processes packets. Test FIFO recovery with your actual output and installed FFmpeg version before depending on it. The details are in the FFmpeg FIFO muxer documentation.

FFmpeg exits or becomes unresponsive
For a process that exits, use the host’s service manager to launch a fresh FFmpeg process. Set a restart delay and bounded retries or an alert threshold, and retain logs and restart timestamps. Those limits are operational safeguards, not universal values prescribed by FFmpeg or YouTube: choose them for your workload and make persistent failures visible instead of letting the service cycle indefinitely.
A supervisor restart policy handles process failure, not necessarily a process that hangs while remaining alive. systemd’s watchdog mechanism is useful only when the service is configured to report liveness correctly; it does not prove YouTube ingest health. Do not describe watchdog signaling as an end-to-end stream check.

Verify recovery in YouTube Live Control Room
- After FFmpeg restarts, check whether a new preview appears.
- Inspect the Health Indicator and read the message and timestamp rather than relying on the process state alone.
- If the preview does not return or the same error reappears, investigate the cause before allowing repeated restarts. YouTube’s severity descriptions distinguish critical red messages from moderate yellow ones; both warrant checking their accompanying details.
If a third-party encoder cannot start, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance includes obtaining a new stream key in Live Control Room and updating the encoder as a possible remedy. Use that step when the error points to a key or startup problem, not as a routine response to every interruption. See YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guidance.

YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL. Get the RTMPS server URL from Live Control Room and confirm that your encoder supports it before switching transport. Details are in YouTube’s RTMPS overview.

FFmpeg’s online manuals are regenerated nightly and correspond to the newest revision; an option shown there may not be present in an older packaged build. Check the documentation or help output for the FFmpeg version installed on the machine that runs the stream. FFmpeg explains this distinction on its documentation page.

- FFmpeg is running, but YouTube has no preview: check the output URL, stream key, connection errors, and the Live Control Room message. A running process is not proof of successful ingest.
- Restarts happen repeatedly without recovery: inspect stderr and the service journal, then check for persistent causes such as a bad key, unsupported format, or unavailable input. Add a delay and retry or alert limit so the same failure does not create a tight loop.
- YouTube reports a format error: verify that the video is H.264 and audio is AAC, as YouTube identifies non-H.264 video and non-AAC audio among format issues.
- The HTTP input does not reconnect: confirm that the failing connection is an HTTP input and that the chosen reconnect option applies to it. HTTP reconnect options are not a general RTMP/RTMPS output-recovery mechanism.
- The FIFO output continues but media is missing: check whether packet dropping is enabled. Dropping packets can keep processing moving but omits part of the stream.
- The option in an online manual is rejected: check the installed FFmpeg build’s local documentation or help; online manuals describe the newest revision, not necessarily your packaged version.
