To monitor a prerecorded YouTube livestream remotely, check YouTube’s stream health in Live Control Room, then—if you need unattended alerts—combine YouTube Live Streaming API checks with separate checks of the streaming computer or host and your alert-delivery path. A running encoder alone does not prove YouTube is receiving a healthy feed, and a healthy feed does not prove an alert reached you.
Check YouTube’s view of the stream first
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and select the scheduled or active stream.
- Review stream health messages. YouTube says the Live Control Room displays stream health while streaming, including specific errors and instructions. Use those messages to distinguish a feed problem from a simple change in audience activity. YouTube Help: See your live stream’s metrics
- Use real-time analytics as context, not as a health check. Metrics such as concurrent viewers, duration, chat rate, views, and average view duration describe audience activity. Few viewers may indicate an audience or discovery issue rather than a failed encoder.
This manual check is useful when you can open Studio yourself. It is not, by itself, an unattended notification system.

Set up unattended checks with the Live Streaming API
For a custom monitor, keep three kinds of state separate in your logs and alerts: whether YouTube is receiving the incoming feed, whether that feed is healthy, and whether the viewer-facing broadcast is in the expected lifecycle state. The API represents the incoming feed as a liveStream resource and the viewer-facing event as a liveBroadcast.

Check the incoming feed
Inspect the associated liveStream resource’s status.streamStatus and status.healthStatus. Documented stream statuses include active, created, error, inactive, and ready; health statuses include good, ok, bad, and noData. Health details can include configuration issues such as insufficient video input or audio/video configuration problems. Consult the LiveStreams API reference for the resource fields and current definitions.

An active stream means YouTube is receiving data. It does not, by itself, establish that the content is correct or that viewers can play it successfully. Treat stream status and health status as distinct signals.
Check the broadcast lifecycle too
Inspect the linked liveBroadcast and its lifecycle status separately from the incoming feed. A feed can be arriving while the broadcast is not in the state you expect. The LiveBroadcasts API reference describes broadcast resources and monitor-stream output, which is intended for broadcaster preview and testing—not off-site alert delivery.

The YouTube Live Streaming API overview advises confirming that the bound stream is active before transitioning a broadcast. It also describes intermediate lifecycle states and troubleshooting a broadcast stuck in a transition. If you automate transitions, account for those intermediate states rather than treating every non-final response as a failure.
Design the alert so it is useful
- Include the stream and broadcast state, the observed health status, the time of the check, and any configuration issue reported by YouTube.
- Do not page on one transient poll alone. Choose retry and polling behavior to balance how quickly you need to know against false alarms; the right interval depends on your tolerance for delay.
- Deliver notifications through a channel you can reach away from the streaming machine, and test that delivery path deliberately. API polling does not guarantee that a notification is delivered.
- Monitor API polling failures separately from stream failures. If credentials, a request, or the alert destination stops working, report that as a monitoring problem rather than claiming the stream is down.
Monitor the machine and automation separately
YouTube’s API describes the feed sent to the platform and the broadcast shown to viewers; it does not establish that the computer or automation process is healthy. Add checks suited to your software and hosting arrangement:

- Confirm that the streaming host is reachable.
- Check that the encoder or playback automation process is running.
- Inspect local output or logs for a stopped playlist, missing input, or other process error.
- Compare these signals with YouTube’s feed health and broadcast lifecycle instead of treating any one as definitive.
A process can remain open while its input is missing, and YouTube can report a problem even when the local process appears to be running. These host checks are operational guidance, not a YouTube feature; the exact checks depend on the encoder and hosting setup.
Keep preview, on-stream overlays, and remote alerts distinct
YouTube’s monitor stream is a broadcaster preview and testing feature. It can help you inspect what is being sent, but the API documentation does not describe it as an off-site notification service. Likewise, an alert graphic shown inside a livestream is not an alert telling you remotely that the stream failed.

OBS states, “OBS Studio does not directly provide stream alerts.” Its help page discusses third-party alert overlays embedded as Browser Sources; those are on-stream overlays, not a built-in remote monitoring and paging service. OBS Project: How do I add alerts to my stream?
Choose the monitoring approach that fits your operation

These are qualitative trade-offs, not measured reliability or performance claims. A custom monitor offers more unattended coverage, but it adds components that also need monitoring.
Rehearse failures before relying on alerts
Test the monitoring chain deliberately: simulate a lost input, stop the encoder or playback automation, make the API poll fail, and make the alert destination unreachable. Confirm that each case produces a distinct, understandable result and that recovery is visible after the fault clears. This is a recommended operating practice; results depend on your setup.
