CloudWatch can show that the sender is busy, reachable, or under pressure, but EC2 metrics alone do not prove YouTube is receiving an acceptable video stream.
What CloudWatch can—and cannot—tell you
Amazon EC2 publishes instance metrics to CloudWatch. Those metrics help you spot host-side conditions such as CPU load, network activity, and failed status checks. With the CloudWatch agent installed and configured, you can also publish selected operating-system metrics and logs.

YouTube Live Control Room is the separate, platform-side view: it reports stream health and status messages for the feed YouTube receives. Use both dashboards. A healthy EC2 metric does not confirm successful YouTube ingestion, and a healthy YouTube preview does not show whether the instance has an underlying resource problem. See AWS’s EC2 monitoring overview and YouTube’s live-stream metrics guidance.

Choose the right monitoring layer
| Layer | What it tells you | Frequency or setup | Cost consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| EC2 basic monitoring | Default instance metrics, including examples such as CPUUtilization and NetworkIn, plus status checks. |
Most default metrics use five-minute periods; status-check metrics are available in one-minute periods. | AWS marks basic monitoring as no charge in its detailed-monitoring comparison. |
| EC2 detailed monitoring | More frequent published instance metrics. | Enable explicitly for one-minute metric periods, at launch or on an existing instance. | AWS charges per metric; check current pricing before enabling. |
| CloudWatch agent | Selected guest operating-system metrics and logs from inside the instance. | Install and configure the agent, choose what to collect, and verify it can publish. | Additional selected metrics are billed as custom metrics; check current AWS pricing. |
| CloudWatch alarms | Threshold-based notification or action when a metric meets a condition over configured periods. | Select a metric, threshold, evaluation periods, and an action such as an SNS notification. | Alarm and related service charges depend on the current AWS pricing and configuration. |
| YouTube Live Control Room | YouTube-side ingestion health, preview, and stream status messages. | Inspect during a test and throughout the live event. | Not an EC2 metric; it is the platform-side check. |
AWS documents the five-minute and one-minute periods, detailed-monitoring charges, and enablement options in Manage detailed monitoring for your EC2 instances. For agent capabilities, see the CloudWatch agent overview and EC2 console agent setup.

Set up monitoring for an EC2 sender
- Review the instance’s published metrics. Open the EC2 instance’s CloudWatch metrics and check CPU utilization, network traffic, and status checks. Add other relevant metrics that the instance publishes for your workload. Establish what normal looks like while running a representative stream.
- Decide whether five-minute periods are fast enough. Basic metrics may be too slow for an issue that needs a quick response. If one-minute periods are operationally useful, enable detailed monitoring and account for its per-metric charge. Status-check metrics already have one-minute periods under the documented basic-monitoring behavior.
- Add guest metrics or logs only when needed. Install and configure the CloudWatch agent if you need visibility into memory, disk, processes, or relevant logs. Select the telemetry deliberately, grant the instance only the permissions needed for the chosen setup, and confirm the agent is delivering data. Memory and disk usage are not part of the default EC2 metric set described by AWS. The agent documentation explains collection options.
- Create alarms around sustained, meaningful conditions. In CloudWatch, choose a metric, threshold, evaluation periods, and a response such as an SNS notification. AWS also describes Auto Scaling policies as a possible alarm action. Set thresholds from a representative test rather than copying a generic CPU, memory, bitrate, or network number: appropriate limits depend on the encoder, workload, instance family, resolution, frame rate, and target latency. AWS explains alarm behavior in Monitor Amazon EC2 resources.
- Check the YouTube side before going live. In Live Control Room, inspect the preview, health indicator, and status messages. Test the actual video resolution, frame rate, audio, movement, and encoder configuration—not merely whether the EC2 instance is running.
- Watch both views during the event. Use CloudWatch to identify host or configured guest issues, and Live Control Room to assess YouTube ingestion. If one view appears healthy while the other reports trouble, investigate the layer reporting the fault instead of treating either dashboard as end-to-end proof.
Validate the encoder and stream before the event
CloudWatch cannot correct an unsupported or unsuitable encoder output. YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies H.264 video and AAC audio for proper ingestion, with recommended bitrates varying by codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264, YouTube lists 5 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps, 8 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps, 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are YouTube recommendations for the listed formats, not a guarantee of stream quality; consult its current table for your exact target format.
Use YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance when configuring the sender. Before the event, YouTube recommends testing, checking the preview, verifying accessibility, and continuously monitoring audio and video quality. Follow its live streaming tips; during the event, also review the stream health and metrics.

Troubleshoot by identifying which layer is failing
- CPU or network activity is high. This can indicate pressure on the EC2 sender, but neither metric alone proves whether YouTube is receiving the stream. Correlate the metrics with agent data or logs if configured, and compare them with Live Control Room health and status messages.
- Memory or disk metrics are missing. Those are guest metrics, not default EC2 metrics. Check whether the CloudWatch agent is installed, configured to collect the metrics, permitted to publish them, and successfully delivering data.
- YouTube reports a stream-format error. Review the encoder output against YouTube’s requirements for H.264 video and AAC audio. The official live streaming error messages guidance identifies a format other than H.264 video and AAC audio as an incorrect stream format.
- The instance looks healthy but the audience cannot view the stream. A healthy host metric is not proof of successful ingestion or viewer access. Check Live Control Room’s preview and status messages, verify accessibility, and confirm audio and video during a representative test.
- An alarm fires briefly without an obvious stream issue. Revisit its threshold and evaluation periods using test-stream behavior. Alarms evaluate metrics over selected periods; sustained-condition settings can help avoid reacting to transient noise.
Or let it run in the cloud
