Monitor the stream at two separate points: use Azure Monitor to see whether the Azure VM and its configured guest workload are healthy, and YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room to see whether YouTube is receiving a healthy live feed. A VM that is running does not prove that the stream is reaching YouTube or playing smoothly.
What each monitoring dashboard can—and cannot—tell you

These dashboards cover different parts of the delivery path; use both when you need to distinguish a VM problem from a stream-ingestion problem. The Microsoft and YouTube guidance cited here describes the two monitoring surfaces separately. It does not establish a built-in Azure Monitor connector for Live Control Room health, so treat any combined alert as a custom integration unless you verify one for your setup.

Set up Azure VM monitoring
Start with platform metrics
Begin with Azure Monitor’s host-level view of the VM, including available CPU, network, and disk-utilization signals. These metrics are collected at the Azure platform level; they are not the same as detailed telemetry from inside the guest operating system.

To inspect guest operating system or workload performance, configure Azure Monitor Agent and a data collection rule. VM Insights or enhanced monitoring can help with onboarding. Microsoft’s enhanced-monitoring tutorial takes you through the VM’s Monitor experience, monitoring configuration, metrics and workspaces, optional recommended alert rules, and enabling the configuration. Charts may take a few minutes to populate while data is collected. If they are initially empty, allow time for collection and check the agent and data collection rule before concluding that setup failed.

Create Azure alerts that match the signals
Choose an alert type based on what Azure is measuring:
- Metric alerts: use these for numeric metrics and thresholds, such as a resource-pressure condition or VM availability signal.
- Log search alerts: use these when the condition depends on collected events or the results of a query.
Microsoft’s recommended VM alert guidance can provide a starting baseline, but those alerts are host-focused and offer limited visibility into an application or workload. Add a service or process alert only if you are collecting that signal, and set its threshold against observed behavior and the requirements of your stream. Do not assume a threshold has been validated for your deployment.

Alert rules can have costs depending on rule type, dimensions, and evaluation frequency. A total monitoring cost cannot be determined without details such as VM size and region, workspace, data volume, retention, and alert configuration; check current Azure pricing for the design you plan to use.

Keep YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room available during the broadcast. Review stream status, health messages, and real-time analytics rather than relying on the Azure VM’s running state. YouTube’s live-stream metrics guidance explains the status and analytics views.

When a message appears, use its timestamp and severity to connect the symptom to events in your encoder or VM logs. YouTube’s live-stream error-message reference describes red errors as critical—potentially preventing an event from starting or causing viewer problems—and yellow errors as moderate, potentially degrading quality. Read the specific error’s instructions; severity alone does not identify the underlying cause.
Validate encoder settings and network capacity
Choose settings for the actual output profile
Use YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate table for your selected codec, resolution, and frame rate. The recommended bitrate varies by all three, so a value that suits one profile should not be treated as universal. Test with similar audio and movement before a live event, then monitor stream health and messages during the broadcast.

Leave network headroom
YouTube’s streaming tips recommend leaving 20% of bandwidth headroom beyond the total planned stream bitrate. Check outbound capacity against the combined stream bitrate, not just one video setting. YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream, so a running VM alone is not evidence that its outbound connection is sufficient or uninterrupted.
